Greetings: July was rough. I did not do well on the ride-share for the entire month, and Walmart is a heavy adjustment. But I keep moving forward, and that is the best I have right now.

Busy...
...busy busy busy......
August 01, 2026
...Hey, I might be busy.....
One of the most challenging aspects of my job is dealing with the monotony that often sets in. For a significant portion of my shift, I find myself standing in a designated area, vigilant and attentive to my surroundings, always on the lookout for anyone who might make mistakes or try to outsmart the system. However, today was notably different, as it coincided with the first of the month; a time typically marked by new routines and scheduled inspections.
I kicked off the day by conducting a thorough fire extinguisher inspection. This task involved checking each extinguisher for proper placement, confirming their pressure gauges were within the safety range, and ensuring that the inspection tags were up to date. After completing this critical safety check, I shifted my focus to the Ecolab inspection. Over the past month, we have seen significant improvements in our Ecolab results, and I was eager to see if this trend continued.
This month's inspection revealed that we had maintained a higher standard compared to last month. While a few minor issues still need our attention; such as some inconsistencies in cleanliness in certain areas; overall, the performance was markedly better. I took note of the progress, which is a testament to the hard work and dedication of the team.
Once I finished the inspections, the familiar monotony of standing in one place returned. Nonetheless, I felt a sense of gratitude for the change of pace that the inspections provided. They not only broke the tedium of the day but also reinforced the importance of our safety protocols and the progress we are making in maintaining a high standard in our operations.
..But spinning wheels over here.....
The personal side of my day was quite different from the business side. While I was busy at work, my personal endeavors really suffered. I got up late, and even though I tried to jump right into my tasks, I struggled to find any momentum in the morning. I left much of my to-do list untouched before heading out for work. After walking around all day, I was exhausted when I got home. I ended up just eating dinner and going to bed. It may not be much of a life, but it's mine.

...Short and annoyed.....
No, I am not an angry dwarf, short in stature and brimming with annoyance. The "short" I'm referring to is our chronic understaffing in the store. Management is not allocating enough hours for us to operate effectively and efficiently, which seems to be a recurring issue with most large corporations these days. We are constantly forced to make do with limited resources, stretched so thin that we eventually learn to juggle everything with almost nothing. Such is corporate America.
While I can handle the chaos of being short-staffed; I've honed the ability to maintain control even when those around me are falling into a spiral of panic; what truly tested my patience today was a pair of uniquely challenging customers: a self-proclaimed "Karen" and a man who introduced himself as the "Prince of Nigeria."
Let me first share the encounter with the so-called "Prince." He approached the checkout with an air of entitlement, insisting that he be allowed to scan a lower-priced version of an item to purchase a higher-priced one, which, of course, is against store policy. When I firmly declined his request, his expression shifted from surprise to indignation. With a flourish, he revealed identification; yes, identification; proclaiming him the Prince of Nigeria. Despite my restraint from diving into the typical questions that arise from such dubious claims, he was clearly aggrieved. He expressed his outrage, claiming that my refusal to let him cheat the system was an insult to royalty. In a dramatic flourish, he vowed to return the next day to speak with my manager about having me fired for my perceived slights. I'm not exaggerating; this was genuinely how our conversation unfolded.
Next was the confrontation with Karen. The store was bustling with activity, an orchestra of scanning devices and bustling shoppers, making it nearly impossible to monitor all ten checkout lanes simultaneously. In an effort to manage the situation, I opted to check receipts as customers exited; a makeshift but effective method for catching the occasional items missed at the bottom of carts or large purchases that mysteriously vanished from the transaction.
In the midst of this organized chaos, a regular customer encountered an issue, and all our attendants were occupied. I promptly left my post to assist her, choosing to check her receipt as she neared the end of her transaction. Little did I know, this action would ignite a fury that must have reverberated through generations of her lineage. She erupted into a vocal tirade, spitting indignation about how my actions were going to cost me my job. According to her, it was my duty to ring up customers, not to involve security in a simple checkout process. She vehemently proclaimed her honesty, asserting that she is a regular shopper and would never dream of stealing.
For what felt like an eternity; ten minutes, to be precise; she unleashed her outrage, demanding my name, the name of the person managing the checkout line, my direct supervisor's name, and the name of the store manager. She was adamant about returning the next day to ensure I was reprimanded or worse.
In my defense, although I wear a blue vest, I am part of the asset protection team, and I was well within my rights to verify receipts in an effort to deter theft. Yet, ironically, given her self-proclaimed honesty, I now feel compelled to keep an even closer eye on her in the future. After all, who protests so vocally without just cause?
..Once again, calm....
My personal journey through life has shifted to feel more like a side note compared to my professional experiences. Reflecting on my day, I realized how much I managed to overcome the challenges that had clouded my mind yesterday. I took the time this morning to gather my thoughts, focus my energy, and set clear intentions to get back on track for the week ahead.
After clocking out from my day job, I decided to drive for a rideshare service. Much to my surprise, the night was quite rewarding both financially and in terms of the engaging conversations I had with my passengers. I enjoyed the variety of people I met, each with their own story and perspective, which made the experience feel fulfilling on a personal level as well.
However, by the time I finally pulled into my driveway and stepped into my home, a wave of exhaustion washed over me. It felt as if all the energy I had poured into the day had caught up with me at once. I knew it was essential to take a moment to unwind. So, I settled onto my couch, turned on some entertainment, and let myself be absorbed in a movie that I had been looking forward to. With the familiarity of the story and characters, I gradually felt myself relax and detach from the day's fatigue. Soon, it was time for bed, and as I drifted off into a peaceful sleep, I felt a sense of gratitude for the day's small victories and the promise of tomorrow.

...An incident.....
Today marks my final workday before I enjoy a much-anticipated two-day break, and as fate would have it, it has turned out to be quite an eventful one. For the majority of the day, everything proceeded smoothly and adhered to the expected routine. However, as evening fell, tensions escalated when one of our stock workers; who is known for having a rather short fuse; set off a scene that reverberated throughout the store.
About a week ago, this employee had misplaced his phone and, in a moment of frustration, jumped to the conclusion that it had been stolen. After an hour of searching and venting his frustrations to anyone who would listen, he ultimately discovered it sitting innocently on a shelf, leading to an embarrassing realization. Despite that incident being resolved, the shadow of his earlier outburst seemed to linger.
Fast forward to this evening, and it appeared that deja vu was in play. Once again, his temper flared, leading to another eruption of frustration that echoed through the store. I was situated near the registers when I first heard his agitated voice rising above the regular hum of evening shoppers. Initially, I couldn't discern the exact nature of the problem, but as the shouting grew louder, I began to piece together that he was, once again, upset about something trivial.
When I approached the scene, I did not witness the chaos as he hurled various items; boxes and merchandise; around in exasperation. I was not present to see the actual throwing, but the noise he created was unmistakable. Realizing the urgent need to intervene, I stepped forward, trying my best to deescalate the situation and reassure him that whatever had upset him could be addressed calmly.
Regrettably, the severity of his outburst means that it will require official intervention, which truly saddens me. I genuinely like this employee and appreciate his contributions to the team, but maintaining a safe and respectful environment is paramount, and tough decisions must be made when boundaries are crossed.
Now that the chaos has subsided, I find myself looking forward to my two days off. It's time for me to reset and recuperate from this whirlwind of events, leaving the stresses of work behind; if only for a little while.
..Into the land of rest....
I spent the entire day focusing intently on just getting through it, battling the monotony of the daily grind. The morning began with my usual routine; brushing my teeth, making a cup of coffee, and getting dressed for work. I even carved out some extra time for a workout, which felt invigorating and gave me a sense of accomplishment before the day truly unfolded.
However, my optimism was swiftly overshadowed when I decided to check on the historical data from my fitness watch. This feature was something I had grown to rely on, as it made tracking my progress easy and motivating. I had assumed it would sync seamlessly with my phone, allowing me to review my hard work in a user-friendly format. To my dismay, as I navigated through the app, I discovered that the company had discontinued this feature.
Frustration set in as I realized that I had been diligent about my fitness, recording countless strides and miles. I had been walking five miles a day as part of my daily routine, all aimed at improving my health. With the loss of this feature, I now had no way of tracking that progress. After some investigation, I found out that the company had changed their data format entirely. What used to be a straightforward process was now convoluted, requiring a series of complicated steps to export my data, which would only be available in a raw, unreadable form.
The company did offer a premium package that promised the return of the user-friendly data export options I once enjoyed, but I found myself resentful of their business practices. Instead of paying extra to maintain access to a service that was previously standard, I felt that it would be more prudent to simply replace the watch altogether. It was becoming increasingly frustrating to be gouged by corporations that seemed to prioritize profits over customer satisfaction, especially when their products initially appeared so promising.
After that incident, work was a blur. I tried to shake off the irritation, focusing instead on the tasks at hand. Fortunately, the day eventually came to an end. When I got home, I treated myself to a hearty dinner. It wasn't the healthiest choice; a decadent burrito dish loaded with cheese; but I savored every bite, allowing myself a moment of indulgence. The best part of the evening came when I realized I had the next two days off to recharge and catch up on personal projects.
As I settled into bed, I rested my head on the soft pillow, feeling the weight of the day's frustrations begin to fade away. I resolved to wake up early the next morning, filled with anticipation for all that I hoped to accomplish in my time off. I had plans to tackle my to-do list and perhaps even explore new options for a fitness watch that wouldn't leave me feeling so let down.
Rest?...
...nah, not me......

..do nothing...yeah, right.....
Although I could have chosen to do nothing and avoided any consequences, that's not who I am. Today, I spent my time reviewing and managing the rideshare information for the week. While this may not be as exciting as the previous couple of days, I'll take it.
..Labor intensive day....
I managed to get a great night's sleep, which set me up to hit the ground running when morning arrived. I woke up feeling refreshed, but I quickly remembered I had a lengthy to-do list awaiting my attention. By the time I finished my morning routine and gathered my resolve to start tackling the tasks, I glanced at the clock and realized it was already past 11 AM. Nevertheless, I refused to let the late start hinder my productivity for the day.
I decided to focus first on the front yard, approaching it with the fierce enthusiasm of a Chihuahua determinedly going after a bone. Armed with my gardening tools, I worked energetically to shape the space, trimming overgrown edges and clearing away debris. After a solid physical effort, I could feel my energy waning and knew it was time to refuel. However, instead of taking a break, I dove straight into weed whacking. The satisfying buzz of the trimmer made quick work of those pesky weeds, and soon enough, the front yard was looking much more presentable.
S
Feeling accomplished, I next grabbed the new rototiller and headed toward the front garden bed. The fresh scent of soil filled the air as I sank the tines into the earth, churning it for planting. About halfway through this labor-intensive task, however, I had to pause. Even though the rototiller functioned beautifully, it was clear that operating it required significant upper body strength, and I found myself fatigued. Deciding not to push my luck further, I set the rototiller aside for the day and shifted my focus to the backyard.
In the backyard, I switched gears to mowing the lawn. The rhythmic sound of the mower was oddly therapeutic, and I moved swiftly, making sure to cover every inch of the grass. While I successfully mowed the entire yard, I only managed to complete about half of the necessary weed whacking, meaning I'd have to tackle that chore again first thing in the morning.
You might think that would be a full day's work, but I wasn't finished yet. Once outside chores were done, I moved to the kitchen to prepare a the makings of a hearty fisherman's stew. I meticulously chopped up all the fish, appreciating the vibrant colors and textures as I worked. After that, I switched my attention to creating party wings, whipping up a homemade Buffalo sauce that filled the kitchen with mouthwatering aromas. Just as the wings were finishing up in the oven, my wife arrived home, and I felt a wave of satisfaction seeing her pleased expression when she discovered the dinner I had prepared, even if it was just going to be for leftovers.
While the day wasn't perfect, it certainly ranked above many others in terms of accomplishment. However, to my dismay, I found myself going to bed much earlier than usual. Just before midnight, I was jolted awake by muscle cramps that started creeping in, a clear indication that I had pushed my body a bit hard. I suspect I'll be dealing with the aftermath of today's exertions when morning comes.
No, really...
...time to rest......
August 05, 2026
..move along, nothing to see here.....
There are some days that are meant for catching up and reviewing, and today was one of those days. I reflected on the past week and considered what's coming up next week. After today, I only have to work for two more days before my next day off. I seem to be in a cycle where I have two weekends in a row with two days off, and then in the third week, I work split shifts. I'm sure there's a method behind this pattern, but I'm not quite sure what it is. Anyway, my next day off is Saturday, and I'm looking forward to it.
..The opposite end of the scale....
Yesterday turned out to be incredibly labor-intensive, leaving me somewhat worn out, so today I made the decision to take it easy and adopt the demeanor of a small bump on a log. It truly felt like I was in slow motion compared to yesterday's hustle. I tackled the last bits of yard work, which took only about half an hour, but it felt like a small victory in my day's agenda.
Once that was done, I turned my attention to the kitchen and whipped up a delicious seafood stew. I'm proud to say that it turned out exceptionally well, brimming with fresh ingredients and rich flavors. What's even better is that this recipe doesn't necessitate the use of pastry shells, making it a simple yet satisfying dish that I'll definitely be making again.
In addition to the culinary endeavors, I took some proactive steps to safeguard our living space. I used the wife's homemade mint barrier; an effective, natural repellent; and combined it with wasp spray. I then sprayed the perimeter of the house and all entry points, hoping this concoction would keep those pesky little insects at bay.
Despite my inclination towards relaxation, we also managed to carve out some quality family time today. I embraced a leisurely atmosphere by watching two movies that are familiar to me: Jumper and Tomorrowland. Both films were a kind of nostalgic comfort, allowing me to sit back and do a few other tasks around the house while they played in the background without demanding my full attention.
Considering how the day unfolded, I'm going to count it as a successful relaxing day and move forward from it.
On a side note, I engaged my social media following today by posting a thought experiment on Facebook that really got the gears turning in my mind. The question posed was quite provocative: What would happen if we redirected all the money currently funneled into politics back into essential sectors like education, healthcare, and technology? Given my long-held awareness of the pervasiveness of greed in our society, I found myself surprised by just how close to home the responses hit.
Despite the diversity of political beliefs among my friends, everyone seemed to rally around a defense of capitalism over a more altruistic approach, leaving me feeling unsettled and unsure about how to process those perspectives. It was an eye-opening experience that highlighted the complexities of our shared values and priorities.

..The Hillbilly faction.....
Today was one of those days where the atmosphere at work felt particularly heavy, as if a cloud of negativity had settled over everyone. Unfortunately, I wasn't in the best frame of mind myself, which only compounded the already palpable tension. If I had to sum up my mood, it was definitely rough. The reason for this discontent was clear: we were once again understaffed, which made accomplishing even the simplest tasks feel like an uphill battle. Despite the light at the end of the tunnel with just two days left in this short workweek before my next day off, I found it challenging to find my rhythm.
As if the day wasn't difficult enough, we had an unwelcome visit from a group we've nicknamed *the hillbillies.* They come in every week with a rather audacious agenda, what we refer to as their *weekly snatch and grab.* This time, however, luck was not on their side. Their strategy involved distracting both the security guard and me by raising a fuss over a vehicle parked in a handicapped space, attempting to rush us out of the store to handle the issue. Their plan backfired when we chose to ignore them, remaining inside and keeping a watchful eye on the situation.
In the process, we were able to pinpoint the last member of their crew, someone we hadn't noticed before but who is now firmly on our radar. She tends to enter the store separately but tailgates another member who fills up a basket full of items. Historically, she has slipped through the cracks and managed to leave without consequences. However, today, we were prepared. We directed her through the assisted checkout lane, hoping to deter future visits and perhaps send them looking for an easier target next time they chose to pull a fast one.
By the time my shift ended, I was already feeling drained, but things took a turn for the worse. As I headed to my car, I discovered that someone had siphoned off most of the gasoline from my tank. They had parked right next to me, positioning themselves conveniently out of the surveillance camera's view, which left me with no evidence to prove what had happened. This incident added an extra layer of frustration to an already challenging day and did nothing to lift my spirits.
..No rest for the wicked....
I don't usually think of myself as wicked, but lately, I can't shake the feeling that I need more rest. Despite having two consecutive days off, I find that it hasn't been nearly enough to recharge my batteries. My mood has taken a downturn, leaning towards the negative side, and I've been grappling with how to lift it. I keep brainstorming different activities or distractions to entertain myself, but nothing seems to hit the spot.
This morning, I was fortunate enough to catch a bit of extra sleep with a short nap, but, of course, my cat decided it was the perfect time to wake me up. Although that made me slightly behind schedule, I managed to regain my focus once I got moving and started my day. After work, I had planned to drive for rideshare to make some extra money, but my plans took a hit when I discovered that my gas tank had been siphoned.
The nearest choice in gas stations is roughly 20 minutes away from my workplace, which completely derailed my evening. I found myself stuck in a not-so-great area, hoping for rides to come through, but the map was frustratingly empty of requests.
I'm holding onto a glimmer of hope that tomorrow will bring better fortune. Right now, though, I can't shake the feeling that I'm just spinning my wheels, caught in a cycle that seems hard to break.

..All work today.....
This morning was a whirlwind of chaos, and I had anchored my hopes on a quick lunch from the deli, but that turned out to be an underwhelming letdown. Unfortunately, the trend of disappointment seemed to linger throughout the day. The first incident that set the tone was a "code white," signifying that a customer or employee had collapsed. In this instance, a frail customer had just walked into the store, settled onto one of our mobility carts, and then suddenly fainted. With the asset protection investigators visiting today, I felt it was best to stay at my post rather than rush to assist. Thankfully, many capable colleagues were on hand to handle the situation, and middle management swiftly took control, restoring a semblance of normalcy to our bustling environment.
The presence of the asset protection team loomed large, with four agents from various locations meticulously roaming the store, their watchful eyes observing every detail. About midway through the day, the head of asset protection and the marketing director arrived, their arrival marked by an air of importance. Although the purpose of their visit remained shrouded in mystery, by the time I clocked out, the boss seemed to be in high spirits, sharing light-hearted jokes and laughter. Whatever the intentions behind their visit, it was clear that it had ended positively.
As evening settled in, the atmosphere in the store shifted to one of weariness and tedium. We faced a staffing shortage, a result of one termination, another employee calling out sick, and two or three more leaving early. By the time I departed at 10:00 PM, only the shift manager and one other employee remained, their faces reflecting the exhaustion of the day. Despite the challenges, we did our utmost to ensure that everything was organized and in its rightful place, reminding ourselves that it could have been much worse.
..The personal side....
At this moment, my workday feels overwhelmingly packed, leaving virtually no room for personal time. Each morning, I find myself waking up already drained, with a sense of exhaustion that lingers throughout the day. The commute to work adds to my fatigue, and it's just as bad when I finally return home in the evening.
I've been trying to supplement my income through ride-sharing whenever possible, but today was a setback. I completely overlooked the monthly shutdown notifications, which meant I was unable to drive and earn that extra money. This oversight turned out to be yet another hassle in an already challenging day.
By the time I step through my front door in the evening, all I want to do is plop down on the couch, have dinner, and let my mind go blank in front of the TV. Some mornings, I manage to muster up some motivation to tackle a project or engage in a hobby, but there are other days when I simply crave stillness, unable to muster energy for anything beyond basic tasks.
I realize that I need to implement some changes soon; otherwise, this relentless grind is going to push me to my breaking point. Finding a way to establish balance and reclaim some personal time is becoming crucial for my mental well-being.
One day at a time...
...does not work......
August 08, 2026
..Off today.....
Today, I focused on addressing issues with Uber. There is a lot of both good and bad information available about how to handle situations with them. The most common problem seems to be that they rely heavily on artificial intelligence without any human intervention. This results in boolean responses that lack personal oversight. I need to ensure that a human reviews my case, as that should help resolve the issue. However, since the company operates primarily with AI, this can be challenging. It's going to take some time to get this sorted out.
..Time, what a concept....
Today is my day off, but I don't feel rested. Although I only worked for two days before this break and will work for two more days after, I think I would prefer having two consecutive days off. I didn't manage to relax at all. On the positive side, I accomplished quite a bit; I tackled the backlog of work, caught up on the current blog, investigated the Uber situation, dealt with the wasps around the house, and organized my art supplies for a new project. I also watched a couple of episodes of "Grimm" and did my best to unwind.
Rough day...
...rough time......

..Spinning wheels.....
Today was one of those days where everything felt short and sweet. I arrived at work a little behind schedule, but I managed to catch up. However, we were short-staffed, and my mood wasn't great; neither was anyone else's. Sunday is not my favorite day of the week.
..Okay, this has to stop....
Pushing through time right now is difficult. I feel like I'm mired in mud and trying to walk. I got up nice and early, and as planned, I took a nap before going to work. The only problem is that I overslept, which set me back for the entire day. I have one more day before my day off, so I just have to push through. I did the absolute minimum during my personal time, and that was it.
Smooth seas...
..But no wind......

..A sailing reference.....
If you are familiar with sailing, you know the challenge of experiencing the doldrums while at sea. It's a moment when everything comes to a standstill, potentially lasting not just for hours but for days. In modern times, having engines makes this less of an issue, but when you rely solely on the wind to propel you across the glassy ocean, you can feel helpless in the middle of a watery desert. That's how today felt for me. I stood at my post, doing what I had to do but nothing more. The people around me seemed like tweeting birds while I felt as if the world was passing me by. Some might find this state relaxing, but I did not. By the time I finished work, I was so exhausted that driving for a rideshare service was not even an option. As a result, this has become an entire week without any supplemental income. I'm tired of feeling this way.
..Looking forward....
This week has really taken a toll on my mood. Each day feels like a struggle, and I find myself accomplishing almost nothing on a personal level. I've been feeling utterly drained, even without the added exhaustion of my rideshare driving hours. I can sense that I'm not coping with it very well either.
For instance, this morning started off with me making what I thought would be a nice lunch to break the monotony. However, when I finally sat down to eat, I was hit with a wave of disappointment upon discovering that my pepperoni had molded. Rather than expressing any frustration or sadness, I simply tossed it aside and opted for a nap instead of my meal. The lethargy just overtook me, and I felt it more convenient to retreat into sleep than tackle my hunger.
By evening, I had little energy left to do anything productive, so I made my way home, dragging my feet the entire way. Looking ahead to tomorrow, my to-do list is quite sparse, yet it still feels daunting. One task on my agenda is to call American Express to address some suspicious emails that I've received, which I suspect are phishing attempts. It's unsettling to think about, but I know I must handle it promptly.
In addition to that, I plan to clear out the junk information that has piled up on my phone; a task I've been putting off for far too long. The clutter is starting to overwhelm me. Lastly, I might face the challenge of dealing with the wasps that have taken up residence around my porch, and I'll also need to cut the lawn since it desperately needs it. However, the thought of tackling either of those chores doesn't excite me in the slightest; it feels more like a burden than a productive use of my time.
It's okay, I swear...
..yeah, it's okay......
August 11, 2026
..I love the easy days.....
Today was been focused on reflecting on my achievements from the previous week and making plans for what lies ahead. I've taken some time to assess my progress, noting the tasks I completed and the goals I've set for the upcoming days. Last night, just before leaving the office, I made a quick detour to Walmart. I needed to pick up some supplies for my lunches, so I stocked up on fresh ingredients to prepare toppings for my salads. As I gathered the items, I couldn't help but think about the notes I was going over from last week, trying to solidify what I learned and how to apply it moving forward.
Tomorrow is a special milestone for me; it marks my 90-day work anniversary. I'm proud to say I've reached the 90-day mark at my job, and I feel like I'm settling into a rhythm, but there's a lingering sense of doubt about whether this position is truly fulfilling for me. While I've become accustomed to the daily routine, I can't shake off the feeling that I should take more initiative to enhance my career skills. I'm considering enrolling in a security course and getting my Identigo processed, which could potentially open up new opportunities for me. However, I feel a bit hesitant to move forward with these plans because I'm unsure if they would genuinely benefit my career path. This constant second-guessing is starting to weigh on me and create a level of frustration that I find hard to ignore.
..Reset. Right?....
I had high hopes for today, eagerly anticipating the tasks I had planned, but sadly, they remained unfulfilled. My intention was to tackle the overgrown front yard, especially since I won't have another day off for nearly a week. However, the sweltering heat made it unbearable to work outside, so I couldn't even take my new tiller for a spin to finish the front garden patch. Instead, I resorted to grabbing a long pole to confront the pesky wasp nests once more, hoping they would eventually take the hint and vacate my space.
After that, I ventured out to explore Goodwill and the Salvation Army. My experience at Goodwill was rather disappointing; I ran into a woman who was extremely irate over the fact that I was wearing my noise-canceling headphones inside the store. It was an unexpected confrontation that soured the atmosphere for a moment. Fortunately, my luck turned at the Salvation Army, where I stumbled upon a lovely outfit perfect for my upcoming promotional shoot for my book(s). I need to prioritize that soon; it feels important.
While browsing, I noticed a conversation occurring nearby; a customer was audibly upset about the presence of queer people shopping alongside everyone else. It took a minute to realize she was talking about me, mostly because I was holding what could be considered women's clothing. Thankfully, a compassionate worker stepped in to address the situation, sparing me the need to intervene myself.
Next, I made my way to Kroger to grab some Tyson chicken that had been advertised as on sale. However, I was met with disappointment as the shelves were not stocked according to the promotions I had seen. It turned out to be a frustrating experience, as I ended up spending more than I initially planned, thanks to many of the sale items being out of stock.
Returning home, I finally found some much-needed relaxation time. I set up my new podcast site, which I'm excited to share more about later. In addition to that, I immersed myself in some VR gaming, pulled out my collection of cameras, and experimented with acrylic paints; an entirely new venture for me, as I've only worked with watercolors and oils before. I have a few ideas brewing for my painting, which I'm looking forward to exploring.
To round out my day, I squeezed in some exercise, played around with my saxophone and guitar, spent time on my punching bag, and finally allowed myself to unwind. Honestly, the thought of the next six days ahead feels daunting, but I'm hoping to navigate through it all as best as I can.
Push through the bad...
..just do it......

..A negative day.....
I have fallen into my usual routines, and there's nothing wrong with that. However, today was different because I was dealing with a massive headache for most of the day. When I'm in that situation, people who normally don't bother me can become very intense. That was my experience today. Nothing significant went wrong, but the day felt like it dragged on forever. Too many people are lollygagging, and it's starting to get on my nerves.
..Routine. Right?....
The personal side of my day unfolded in a rather predictable manner. I slept reasonably well, though I awoke with a mild headache, which unfortunately intensified as the hours passed. Despite this discomfort, I managed to navigate my morning routine without any major hiccups. However, my attempts at productivity felt lackluster at best. Right now, I'm focused on my cameras, as I want to make sure everything is in good working order; this includes charging the batteries and checking all the functions.
The first hurdle I encountered was that I couldn't find my cameras. After some rather frantic searching, I finally located them tucked away in a corner of my studio. But relief soon turned to frustration when I discovered that half of my batteries were missing. It seems I'll be digging through the entirety of my garage soon to locate the elusive camera bag, which I suspect contains not only my batteries but other essential equipment as well.
In addition to my photographic equipment, I unearthed my art materials, feeling inspired to create, but quickly realized that I was lacking two crucial items: gesso and canvases. Although I have a fair amount of white gesso, the specific projects I'm eager to dive into; especially those involving oil paints; call for a black background. Unfortunately, black gesso isn't readily available in my usual supplies, and I've come to the conclusion that I'll need to place an order through Amazon. There's also the option of making a trip to the Arts Center on Union, but for some inexplicable reason, the thought of that outing isn't particularly appealing to me.
On a lighter note, I could swing by Gordon's to indulge in a hundred pounds of party wings. Okay, perhaps that's a slight exaggeration, but some of their deals are too good to pass up and certainly would bring a smile to my face.
As I continued my day, I took the opportunity to settle down and work on my new novel, which has slowly begun to take shape. I even devoted some time to researching ideas for a political satire project that has been bouncing around in my mind. While progress is being made, transitioning into a new routine left me feeling as though I hadn't accomplished a great deal just yet.
Lastly, I began the exciting process of designing my podcast. I hope to record anywhere from one to five episodes during my upcoming time off. I've had a conversation with Rebecca, who expressed interest in collaborating through cross-promotion. Given that I'm essentially starting from scratch and remain relatively unknown in the podcasting realm, I can't help but wonder how this arrangement might benefit her; she's a well-established figure in her field, after all. Nonetheless, it's something worth pondering for the future as I continue to carve out my niche in this new endeavor.

..Good or bad?.....
I honestly don't know if today was good or bad, but I lived through it, so I suppose that's a positive. The heat is stifling and its effects are evident, especially on people's moods. Walking into Walmart feels like stepping into a wall of ice after being outside in the heat. It's amusing to observe the reactions of customers, but that wasn't the primary focus of my day.
The biggest challenge today was the water delivery. There is something wrong with how the bottles are packaged; they are so brittle that when people try to pick them up, they shatter, spilling the contents everywhere. By the end of the day, we had three cartloads of damaged water cases. Fortunately, these won't go to waste; they'll be repurposed for online grocery orders, benefiting those who are in and out of the store all day.
The customers were a bit grumpy, which is understandable, especially since it's the 13th of the month—though thankfully, it's not a Friday. That could change the atmosphere, even if only in people's minds. We managed to maintain order in the store for most of the day. Simeon was on site throughout, and he mentioned that they hired a new asset protection investigator who will start in about a week or two. However, based on what I've heard, I would give him only a 20% chance of staying. He's ex-military and young, and I doubt he realizes the boredom he will likely face.
Overall, it was a routine day. Even though I fought through a headache and felt exhausted by the end, I still fired up the rideshare app and earned over $40. Every little bit helps.
..We will push through....
The first question that might come to mind is, "Who is 'we'?" The last time I checked, I was singular. But that's okay; I can count one of my other personalities and move on. On a personal level, it was a very mundane day. I slept late and rushed to get to work on time. I didn't have time for my crossword puzzle, any exercise, meditation, or anything else I wanted to do. Right now, I'm just pushing through until my next days off, which are four days away. The youngest child is heading out on her adventure this weekend, and I truly hope she has a good time. I've been working hard with the rideshare every day, and so far, it's going well. However, I feel like I'm being tightened like a guitar string, and I'm curious to see if I reach that nice plucking stage or if I break first.

..Hectic, but okay.....
The workday felt like a pendulum swinging between moments of intense activity and lulls of waiting. One of the primary challenges we faced was dealing with a series of safety alerts that proved to be quite troublesome. When I returned from my lunch break; a brief escape to recharge; I was greeted by a daunting total of 27 alerts queued up and waiting for my attention. With Kelly currently on vacation, there was no one available to closely monitor our operations, which allowed the workload to slip through the cracks a bit. As I tackled each alert, I realized that the process was more time-consuming than I anticipated; clearing each alert took around three minutes, resulting in nearly 90 minutes of my day being consumed by this task. This unforeseen time commitment significantly detracted from the usual responsibilities I needed to focus on.
As the day progressed, my irritation began to grow regarding some of the social dynamics unfolding in the store. While it isn't exactly my role to intervene directly in these matters, I've taken it upon myself to observe the situation for now. A number of colleagues have developed a habit of taking extended breaks; some wander off for drinks or disappear for restroom breaks, leaving the rest of us scrambling to manage the workload in their absence. This behavior seems to be becoming increasingly prevalent, and while I've chosen to remain a silent witness for the moment, I sense that my patience may wear thin soon if things do not improve.
Despite the challenges, the overall atmosphere of the day was manageable, albeit busy. The work rhythm fluctuated wildly; it felt as if we were caught in a cycle of feast or famine, where periods of intense activity were abruptly followed by stretches of quieter, less demanding moments. In a notable incident, our boss managed to catch a group of thieves attempting to steal about $18.00; it was a surprising moment that broke the routine of our day. I also had a few minor catches of my own, but in the grand scheme, they paled in comparison to the larger events unfolding around us.
By the time I clocked out at 10:00 PM, fatigue had set in deeply, and all I could think about was the comforting thought of going home. Nevertheless, I decided to push through the weariness and dedicated about 90 minutes to ride-share work after leaving the office. While this routine can be taxing, I plan to continue this pattern tomorrow night; however, I've made a mental note to give myself a break on Sunday night to recharge.
..We all float....
Right now, my life revolves around sleep and work. I woke up with just enough time to complete my basic morning routine before heading out the door for work. After a long day, I drove for a rideshare service and then came home to relax before bed. Thankfully, dinner was cheesy chicken, which really hit the spot. I am halfway through my work requirements for the week and can see the downhill slide ahead. I'm looking forward to some time off.

..too many games.....
I'm uncertain about what will happen as time goes on. Many people are playing games at work, testing how far they can push the manager on duty; some are easier to manipulate than others. However, they are discovering that when I step in to do their jobs, I can do them more efficiently. This is concerning since I am the new employee. Tasks like stocking and restocking products on the shelves are particularly time-consuming if not done properly. When done correctly, the situation changes significantly. Since these tasks often serve as a way to waste time, the atmosphere feels precarious. I have no idea what will happen in the near future, but it feels like something is approaching.
..Nothing to see here....
I'm currently going through the motions on autopilot, and that's about all I can manage right now. I slept in and only had just enough time to complete my morning routine. For almost a week, I've only managed minimal meditation and exercise, so I need to find a way to reestablish that routine. Other than that, today was quite uneventful.

..How can 8 hours take 30 hours to pass?.....
Today felt like an eternity. My mind is racing with everything that's happening around me, and work isn't making it any easier. The higher levels of management are still on vacation, and things aren't going well. Perhaps it's just my perception, as it doesn't seem to bother anyone else.
I'm starting to realize that my biggest struggle with returning to retail is my tendency to put 100% into everything I do, while those around me don't seem to share this mindset. Some colleagues consistently avoid their responsibilities. There are two specific workers who aimlessly wander off when there's work to be done. When assigned a task, they find excuses to leave and never come back, acting as if nothing is amiss. I'm not in a position to address this, and it's incredibly frustrating.
..Ouch and then ouch....
The jester, a master of absurdity, casually informed the king during court that the peasants were revolting. With a glimmer of humor in his eye, the king responded that he was indeed aware of the situation and cheekily suggested that perhaps they all ought to take a bath. The remark, though seemingly irrelevant to the pressing issue at hand, struck me as hilarious and has lingered in my mind throughout the day, offering a bizarre levity amidst the unfolding events.
Unfortunately, my day did not begin on a bright note. I had been enjoying what I thought was a restful slumber when some of the muscles in my legs decided to stage a rebellion of their own. After several consecutive days spent on my feet; whether it was the result of work, errands, or various activities; I really should have been prepared for this. Yet, the sudden onset of pain caught me off guard. The discomfort was enough to rouse me from sleep a full two hours before my alarm was set to go off, leading to a much longer day than anticipated.
Since the muscles in my legs were the culprits, sitting for any substantial period was a daunting task. The stiffness and soreness made it difficult to find comfort, causing me to alternate between standing, walking, and attempting to ease the tension. Ironically, while I had gained extra time this morning, I found that I was unable to be productive. Though I had high hopes of tackling a few tasks, I struggled to maintain focus or accomplish anything meaningful, consigned instead to a day of discomfort and restlessness.
As the hours dragged on, my mind turned to my upcoming days off; an escape I was eagerly anticipating. The prospect of resting and recuperating felt like a distant yet promising beacon, and I looked forward to those moments of reprieve that would allow me to recharge and recover fully from this unexpected turmoil.
Oh, and who is Charlie? No idea, just a thought that popped into my head.

..She is back.....
The boss has just returned from her vacation, and her mood is quite difficult to discern. She moved swiftly throughout the store, almost flitting from one section to another, which created an air of frenetic energy. At one point, she even jumped to the front end to lend a hand during a particularly hectic time. Unfortunately, her intervention disrupted the natural flow of operations, leaving me to wonder whether her well-intentioned help did more harm than good. The store was already operating with a skeletal crew, especially for a Monday, which made it exceptionally challenging to maintain organization amidst the chaos.
Adding to the mayhem were what I can only call *ghost employees*; staff members who seemed to vanish at critical moments; further complicating our ability to manage the store effectively. With so many roles unfilled, it felt like we were all stretched razor-thin.
Compounding our troubles was a significant issue: a mystery basket full of items that had been circulating around the store for about five days. This basket contained a variety of small items, the majority of which did not have assigned locations within our inventory system. Consequently, we faced a dilemma: we either had to find proper places for these items or, if that proved impossible, send them to the clearance area. Despite numerous attempts to engage my colleagues, no one seemed willing to take ownership of this troublesome cart, which I estimated held around 150 items.
When the manager on duty assessed the chaotic situation and recognized that we didn't have enough staffing to manage the entire store effectively, she made the decision to close down the self-checkout stations. Although I personally wouldn't have made that choice, it was not mine to make. This closure limited my ability to take on other tasks, compelling me to focus on the mystery cart. After watching most of the staff ignore it for about an hour at a time, with barely five or six items removed, I decided it was time to take action.
In less than an hour, I managed to tackle the entire mystery basket. I organized and placed all the items that could be shelved back in their appropriate spots, while damaged or improperly tagged items were sent off to claims for further processing. Additionally, anything without a clear home received a new designation in our clearance area. With this, the mystery basket transformed from a source of confusion into a well-organized solution.
This experience has underscored a recurring issue I've observed over the past couple of weeks: getting items back on the shelves is a complicated task, yet it's certainly not impossible if approached with the right strategy and by utilizing our new locator system effectively. I've discovered that I can process an entire cart of items in under an hour, a feat that appears daunting to some of my colleagues. While resolving these challenges may not fall solely within my job responsibilities, I find that I may have to shoulder this burden if our operational conditions do not improve soon.
..Just pushing through....
Today's focus was on work. I didn't sleep well, and it felt like I was trudging through a thick bog all day. Willow is in Scotland, and I hope she is enjoying her adventure. I'm looking forward to having a day off tomorrow and the day after. Honestly, I don't have many tasks planned for tomorrow because I just need to sit back and relax. I feel too wound up and have been taking things too personally, and that needs to change.
August 18, 2026
..Not lemon squeezy.....
Today was relatively easy, but it wasn't exactly a walk in the park. My work involved updating the rideshare spreadsheet and double-checking my schedule for next week, which took about 15 minutes. After that, I set out to enjoy the rest of my day.
..Not a whirlwind, just a little puff....
I would love to say that I hit the ground running this morning and bulldozed my way through the day, but that would be a lie, and I'm not one to tell falsehoods. I had a restless night, tossing and turning while my muscles ached with the discordant symphony of soreness. Six consecutive days on my feet, each one lasting what felt like an eternity of nine hours, had worn me down completely. Waking long before the sun had a chance to rise, I found myself unable to slip back into slumber. Instead, I decided to confront the mountain of tasks that had accumulated over the week. However, most of these tasks involved deep intellectual challenges, the kind of work that yields little immediate visible result; none that others could appreciate, at least. Yet, I could feel my own progress, and that sense of achievement was a small spark of satisfaction in an otherwise sluggish day.
Once I felt fully awake and began to stir, I turned my attention to the yard, tackling the ambitious project of revitalizing the front garden bed. The once hard-packed, unyielding earth was good for little more than stubborn weeds. Armed with my brand-new rototiller, I dug deep into the compact soil, breaking it apart with determination until I reached around six inches down. Although I hadn't yet decided what to plant in this freshly turned plot, the thought of its potential excited me.
Later, I indulged in a nostalgic journey by downloading a collection of around ten science fiction films from the 1970s and 1980s. I'm not sure when I'll find the time to watch them, but knowing they're there brings a sense of comfort. Each film features stars who were on the brink of fame, igniting a feeling of nostalgia for an era long gone.
I skipped my usual exfoliating shower today, but I aim to make time for that luxurious self-care ritual tomorrow, as it always leaves me feeling rejuvenated. As the day came to a close, I busily prepared a feast of four pounds of chicken wings, whipping up a homemade teriyaki sauce that I hoped would be the perfect complement. They turned out acceptably well, although the wings were slightly overcooked; an unfortunate consequence of my excitement coupled with a miscalculation in temperature. I suspect I ran the oven about 25 degrees too hot this time, a lesson to remember for future cooking endeavors.
Tomorrow promises to be more refreshing, marking the second of my days off in a row. I have a brunch date with my wife scheduled, which makes me ponder: what does it say about us when we must carve out time for social time on our calendars? Just a curious thought to linger in my mind.
August 19, 2026
..Non-work day.....
Today was a work-free day, and I actually enjoyed it. I didn't exert much mental energy thinking about work, which is extremely rare for me. I'm grateful for this break.
..Sometimes, you just gotta....
Today turned out to be a surprisingly restful day, even more than I had initially planned. The morning hours were spent in my home office, diligently catching up on my data project, which I'm thrilled to say is finally complete; at least for this phase. This project has been a significant undertaking, and after a lengthy process of research, analysis, and revisions. With that major milestone behind me, I was eager to move on to other endeavors.
In addition to wrapping up the project, I took the time to ensure that my blog is fully updated. I went through each post, adding new content where necessary, enhancing the visuals, and correcting any lingering typos. It felt satisfying to clear that off my plate. I also dedicated some time to tackling my overflowing inbox, meticulously sorting through the emails, responding to the urgent ones, and deleting those that no longer required my attention. It's amazing how much mental clarity comes with a tidy inbox.
For lunch, we decided to treat ourselves and headed over to Firebirds in Wolfchase. I had heard quite a bit about this place and was curious to find out whether it lived up to the hype. Unfortunately, my experience was only mediocre. The atmosphere was pleasant enough, but the food itself fell flat. I had higher expectations given all the buzz surrounding the restaurant. Laura ordered a salmon sandwich, and while she seemed to enjoy it, I opted for a Smashburger with a side of chili. The chili, in particular, was a disappointment; bland and lacking in flavor, leaving me wishing for something more exciting. Despite the lovely decor and lively ambiance, I don't think I'll be adding Firebirds to my list of favorite dining spots anytime soon. With the mystery of the restaurant solved, at least I can move on without wondering what I missed.
The remainder of my day was dedicated to home improvement projects, specifically focusing on the deck that has long needed attention. I had been ruminating about how to approach the task, and this afternoon, I finally committed to diving in wholeheartedly. Armed with my tools, I set to work and managed to dismantle half of the deck. This commitment to the project was a significant step forward, and it felt liberating to take on this challenge. As I suspected, when the house was purchased, the previous owners had only addressed the visible side of the boards to bring it up to code. This lack of thoroughness meant that the underside of the deck had been rotting away, which was disheartening to discover. The good news, however, is that the substructure remains sound and in good condition, which will allow for repair and sealing.
Later in the evening, I settled in to watch some episodes of *Grimm*. I've reached a pivotal juncture in the series where the storyline has regained its intrigue and complexity, drawing me back in after a stretch of somewhat lackluster plotlines. I'm genuinely excited to see where the characters and the narrative will lead me next.
Conscious of my early start tomorrow with another six days ahead of me at Walmart, I made a deliberate decision to head to bed around midnight. I knew that getting a good night's sleep was essential, especially since I wanted to avoid starting the week feeling exhausted. As I prepared for sleep, I couldn't help but wonder if my practice of transcendental meditation during the night would lead me to have vivid dreams, which might not always be pleasant. Nevertheless, I know that sometimes you have to take those chances in the search for peace of mind.

..Keep rolling, but slowly.....
I'm back to work today, and things are a bit hectic, even though there wasn't much business. This store has several issues that people either overlook or choose not to address. A lot of the problems stem from personnel, and since we can't replace anyone due to the current workforce situation, there's little that can be done.
The new API has started, and so far, I'm unimpressed, but that's only based on three minutes of observation. Time will tell how it performs. I pushed through the day and managed to reach the end without losing my temper or getting too annoyed, so I'm going to consider that a win for the day.
..A good start....
While work was somewhat of an annoyance, I managed to do well on the personal front. I had the house to myself in the morning and got a good night's sleep, even if it was a bit forced. I hit the ground running and quickly completed my entire morning agenda, allowing me to tackle a few additional tasks as well. I moved the wood from the deck, which turned out to be a much bigger job than I had anticipated. I also took some time to play the saxophone and guitar, engaged in some VR activities, got an extended workout, and even shaved my head while enjoying an exfoliating shower. Overall, it was a productive morning, and I'm happy with it.

..Tired, but an uneventful day.....
Today was just another day of pushing through the workday. I felt tired for most of it because I haven't been getting enough sleep. After my shift at Walmart, the rideshare income was quite low. I'm feeling a bit frustrated, but I don't have many options at the moment.
..Move along, nothing to see....
When I say there is nothing to see here, I truly mean it. The morning was routine, and I worked through my tasks, although not with much enthusiasm. By the time I finished work, I felt exhausted. I'm not sleeping as well as I'd like, but I think that's due to the hours and the workload I've had this week. This is my second consecutive week of working six days, and it's starting to wear on me. Hopefully, by next Tuesday, I can get a complete reset and get back on track.
August 22, 2026
..The big ouch.....
The first half of the day unfolded with an air of normalcy, a predictable cadence that lulled me into complacency. I genuinely anticipated that the second half would follow suit, blissfully unaware that Mother Nature had other plans in store for me. Just as I returned from lunch, the skies darkened ominously, and a tempest brewed on the horizon. When I initially clocked out, the air carried an oddly heavy feel, pressing down like a weight on my chest, but I dismissed it, attributing it to my unease about the day's monotony.
Fifteen minutes into my lunch break, while comfortably nestled in my car, the weather unleashed a fury that felt almost primal, as if an unseen beast had broken free from its confines. Winds howled around me, fierce and relentless, eventually reaching astonishing speeds of up to 70 miles per hour. The rain descended in sheer torrents, blanketing everything in sheets of water that made visibility plummet to less than ten feet. I could barely discern the outline of the parking lot around me through the deluge.
Realizing the danger posed by the towering trees surrounding the lot, I quickly made the decision to relocate my car. The sight of branches snapping and tumbling to the ground only intensified my urgency. I hurried back into the store, only to find it plunged into darkness; the power had gone out. As I re-entered, I saw chaos unfolding; the rain was so intense and horizontal that it surged through the front doors, creating a mini flood in the entranceway. Crowds of startled shoppers were trapped inside, their faces reflecting a mix of confusion and concern.
Almost a hundred people sought refuge in the store, their shopping carts and half-filled baskets now forgotten as they crowded together, hoping for a break in the storm. With the power still out, the atmosphere grew tense as time passed, and it took over an hour before the rain finally relented and we could begin the process of ushering everyone back outside.
Management, realizing the gravity of the situation, made the difficult call to send me home around an hour early. They were already preparing for the inevitable loss of all cold goods, that section of the store morphing into a potential disaster zone. With only a handful of items to my name and less to worry about, I was granted my reprieve.
Once outside, I logged into the rideshare app, hoping to make up for lost time by accepting a few rides. However, this proved to be an adventure of its own. The roads had become perilous; surging rivers of water coursed down the streets, and traffic lights blinked out in an eerie chaos across the city. My heart raced with each turn, the familiar area morphing into a treacherous landscape where I found little comfort or security.
..break in routine....
My normal routine, which I have come to rely on, has been disrupted. Fortunately, our house did not lose power, but many parts of the city did. Before heading to work, I didn't get enough sleep, and I was not looking forward to the night ahead. The monotony can be exhausting. However, with the power loss at the store, the routine was interrupted, and I found myself more awake. Despite that, I still haven't been able to accomplish much. I'm aiming to complete at least one task each day, but even that is proving difficult right now. I'm looking forward to some time off, though that's still a few days away.
August 23, 2026
..The bigger ouch.....
I woke up with an uneasy feeling that today would be a challenging day, and, regrettably, my instincts were spot on. I had barely slept the night before, the result of an unexpected chaos that unfolded at the store. The power outage, which had plunged the store into darkness, was supposed to be a temporary inconvenience, with management optimistically predicting that it would be restored by 11:00 PM. As it turned out, their hopes were dashed, and the reality of the situation was much grimmer.
Although the lights flickered back on, a deafening hum from a diesel generator filled the air, a constant reminder that our usual operations were far from normal. The atmosphere inside the store was frenetic. Even though we were technically closed, the managers had mobilized the staff to work tirelessly. Their mission was clear: rescue every perishable item and transfer it to one of seven large roll-off containers parked at the rear of the building.
My assignment was to tackle the beer aisle, a daunting endeavor with its shelves of heavy cases teetering precariously. With some teamwork and determination, we managed to clear the aisle in a surprisingly efficient manner. Meanwhile, outside, chaos reigned. Employees were diligently pushing carts filled with items out the door in a daisy chain formation, but our troubles were compounded when someone shared our predicament on social media. This sparked the arrival of dumpster divers eager to salvage the discarded goods. Our security guard, clearly overwhelmed, had to call in the Memphis police for support. This kind of disruption was absolutely out of the ordinary for me and added yet another layer of stress to the already chaotic day.
Once the last of the perishable items was out of the store, it was time to pivot back to cleaning and restocking. The delivery trucks rolled into the lot, bringing hope for a return to normalcy as my colleagues began unloading and restocking shelves with new inventory in preparation for the upcoming day.
Since I was not designated for stocking duties, I seized a golden opportunity to finally address a task that had been awaiting attention since my first day on the job. In the water aisle, I discovered three damaged shelves obstructing access to the emergency spill stations. I rolled up my sleeves and carefully removed each damaged shelf, assessing them for repairs. I successfully fixed one and decided to replace the two others that were beyond saving. One of the managers caught sight of me maneuvering a broken shelf through the aisle and simply shook his head in disbelief; his expression said it all.
With the shelves repaired and restored, I shifted my focus to the emergency spill stations throughout the store. I meticulously audited each station, noting what supplies we were lacking and compiling a comprehensive list. This undertaking consumed the better part of five hours and required a keen eye for detail and organization.
As the day wore on, I directed my efforts toward addressing several safety alerts that had accumulated, cleaning up the store, and preparing it for the next shift. By the end of my shift, I was exhausted, having invested everything I had into making things easier for those who would follow in my footsteps. With a sense of accomplishment, I decided to leave fifteen minutes early, a small reprieve from the long day. I offered to drive Simeon home since his car was currently out of commission, grateful for his company during the ride. Today felt extraordinarily lengthy, and the thought of two more days ahead before my scheduled time off loomed over me. I could only hope that tomorrow would bring some semblance of normality.
..No time for rest....
Once again, I found myself grappling with only a minimal amount of sleep, yet the slight shift in my routine somehow infused me with energy that carried me through the day. It was a busy morning, and Simeon and I made a trip to pick up pizza for the crew, while I opted for a cold hamburger and two hot dogs for lunch. Surprisingly, they sat perfectly well with me, providing just the right amount of sustenance. My morning had been somewhat chaotic; I struggled to stay on schedule and, as a result, didn't have time to engage in my usual morning rituals.
After we wrapped up work, I discovered that I wouldn't be driving for rideshare that evening. The map was devoid of any rides, and I needed to give Simeon a lift home instead. Accepting the circumstances, I decided to label today as a lost day and let it go, knowing that tomorrow was a new chance to start fresh.
I'm excited to realize that I'm only two days away from my next much-anticipated day off, and I've put together an extensive list of tasks I want to complete. Among them, I hope to dive into something creative and perhaps capture a couple of photos to document the day.
To add to the excitement, Willow surprised me last night with a thoughtful gift upon her return from Scotland: an authentic Scottish kilt! She had chosen a tartan pattern in one of my favorite colors; purple; which made the gift even more special. As she explained, she selected it because she believes it reflects how I see myself; this perspective intrigued me and felt somewhat valid, despite not necessarily viewing myself as regal.
In the spirit of this unique gift, I plan to order a Sporran, which is the traditional Scottish pouch that complements the kilt beautifully. I'm still in the process of figuring out the right shirt to wear, but the anticipation of donning this outfit fills me with excitement. I can't wait to showcase the kilt and embrace this wonderful aspect of Scottish culture!

..Hi there Hell, how you doing?.....
Today was one of those dreary days that made me seriously question the wisdom of crawling out of bed. I felt the heavy weight of sleep deprivation settling in; this seems to be becoming the norm, something I desperately hope doesn't turn into a regular occurrence. As I dragged myself into work, it felt as if I was stepping into a hornet's nest, buzzing with the chaos that awaited me. The team was already stretched too thin, and I found myself paired with a manager whose leadership style rests in that awkward gray area between tolerance and irritation. While I can't say I outright dislike their approach, I certainly wouldn't call it effective. They often have a tendency to initiate a task and then meander off, leaving the rest of us scrambling to pick up the pieces.
This situation would be much less exasperating if it didn't coincide with the neglect of essential customer-facing responsibilities. For instance, our ideal operational ratio calls for four registers per front-end worker, and while I may dress the part, I certainly don't see myself as one of them. So, when she opened an overwhelming twelve registers and then flitted away to stock candy, abandoning me to handle the chaos alone, it truly set my nerves on edge. Her inability to prioritize effectively became glaringly apparent.
Things only escalated when one of the front-end workers strolled in, shockingly wearing sandals because she had forgotten her actual shoes. In my opinion, the operations manager should have sent her home immediately, even if that left her scrambling for a ride. But instead, the general manager allowed her to remain on duty as long as she stayed behind the counter. When the upper management finally left for the day, that same employee was shifted to reshop duty, which sent me into a silent rage. I firmly believe the workforce is an invaluable asset, and my role is to ensure its protection.
The entire day felt like a relentless assault, wearing me down both physically and mentally. By the time I clocked out at 10:00 PM, having skipped both scheduled breaks, I was utterly drained and stressed to the max. I hastily opened the ride-share app, hoping for a quick escape, but was met with the familiar reality of no available rides in the area. Not that it surprised me; Mondays and Tuesdays are notoriously barren for ride availability.
..It is a Frogtown thing....
The reference to "Frogtown" is about a movie from 1988. It's one of those films that, despite its silliness, is actually quite enjoyable. I sometimes find myself confusing this movie with "Space Hunter: Adventures in the Forbidden Zone," as both are post-apocalyptic, dystopian science fiction films set in a world gone mad. Sometimes, I think truth is stranger than fiction, don't you?
Anyway, I'm facing the day and pushing through. I didn't get enough sleep again last night, so I felt tired throughout work. I didn't have much time before or after work to accomplish anything, so I decided not to worry about it.
The day after...
..The day before......

..Better, a little bit.....
The day was an improvement over yesterday, but not by much. I was working with a more capable manager, but we were still short-handed. My direct supervisor was preoccupied with some important issues that had spiraled out of control. I don't envy him; some of these issues are personal in nature, and that's never a good situation in the workplace.
Although we were again short-handed, we managed to regain control as the evening approached. By the time I was scheduled to leave at 10:00 PM, we had everything organized and taken care of. I felt confident that I left the manager in a good position to handle the end of the night's tasks.
Now, I'm free for the next 48 hours, and I'm looking forward to my two days off.
..I never could resist a ticking clock....
Today was not very productive. I got up, took care of the bare minimums in the morning, and then went back to bed. For lunch, I made myself a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, and then I tried to hit the ground running. If I had to describe the morning, I would compare it to a Bugs Bunny cartoon. However, I managed to get through it and even completed my work.
I'm focusing on the next two days to see how much I can accomplish while still getting some rest and relaxation. After two weeks of working six days on and two days off back-to-back, I can feel the strain. My nerves are frayed, and my temper is shorter than usual. Hopefully, with a bit of luck, I can use the next couple of days to unwind and still feel accomplished.
What horrors of time...
..too much at once......

..Off and easy.....
With today being the first of two days off, the only work responsibilities that I had was to do the weekly paperwork for last week. That took all of about 15 minutes, and I put work to the side. I will think about it at a day that is not today.
..The TOO MUCH part....
Yesterday, the world was rocked by the news of Dolly Parton's passing, a moment that felt both shocking and somewhat inevitable given her advanced age. Her absence leaves a profound void in the entertainment landscape, dimming the light of a shining star who brought joy and inspiration to so many. Today, we received the heartbreaking news that Tim Curry has also passed away at the same age. Like Dolly, he was another luminary whose contributions have enriched countless lives.
Dolly Parton and Tim Curry were both pivotal figures in my upbringing. While Dolly didn't have as much direct impact on my personal life, I always held a deep respect for her talent and spirit. Tim Curry, however, injected countless joyful moments into my life through his unforgettable performance in *The Rocky Horror Picture Show*, which I cherished during my younger years. His portrayal of Frank N. Furter was not just a role; it was an experience that resonated with me and many others, creating memories that I still hold dear.
In the midst of this somber news, I managed to stay productive. I took advantage of the day and completed a lot of outdoor work, including tending to the front yard, half of the backyard, and clean-up around the entire swimming pool. Despite the physical exertion and the satisfaction that should have come with those accomplishments, I found it difficult to take pride in my efforts. There was a lingering heaviness in the air that dulled my sense of achievement.
Later, I made my way to Walmart to pick up the ingredients I'll need for some cooking tomorrow. I'm excited about the menu I've planned: crispy potato wedges, flavorful parmesan wings, spicy cowboy candy, and savory garlic mushrooms. I'm hoping that immersing myself in cooking will provide a pleasant distraction and lift my spirits.
As I reflect on life, I can't help but notice the signs of aging creeping in. With my birthday less than three weeks away, I usually find myself descending into a familiar deep blue funk that often accompanies this time of year. However, this September feels different. While I acknowledge that I'm still feeling a bit moody, I'm pleasantly surprised that I'm not sinking into depression this time around. It's a welcome change that I hope will last as the month unfolds.
Nothing from nothing...
..leaves nothing......

..Antsy.....
I find myself grappling with a profound sense of dread as I reflect on returning to work tomorrow. This oppressive feeling seems to loom over me, overshadowing my thoughts about the challenges that await. While I acknowledge that our current situation is only a phase and that we're slowly inching towards a resolution, the pace of progress feels excruciatingly slow. I often ponder which will ultimately give way first: the ongoing political and personnel struggles within the store or my dwindling patience.
On a brighter note, I've recently acquired a new wrist accessory for my phone; a stylish piece that I'm eager to try out starting tomorrow. I'm optimistic that it will help streamline my work experience by reducing the chances of me accidentally dropping my device during hectic moments. Just imagining how much easier it might make my day-to-day tasks is a small comfort.
Looking forward, tomorrow is Friday, and I'm particularly determined to ensure that I get a restful night's sleep tonight. A good night's rest is crucial, especially since I plan to engage in some serious ride-sharing tomorrow night to help boost my performance metrics. I'm hoping that by actively extending my hours, I can see an improvement in my numbers and end the week on a positive note.
..To rest or not to rest....
Deciding whether to take a break and recharge or power through and tackle my endless list of tasks felt like a monumental decision. I recognized the need for some mental downtime to clear my head, but there was also a considerable amount of work to be done around the house and personal projects that had been lingering on my to-do list for far too long. In the end, I opted for a compromise: I would divide my time for the day, giving myself the opportunity to relax while still being productive.
First, I went through all of my cameras. I carefully checked each one, ensuring they were fully charged and functioning properly. It brought me a twinge of sadness as I contemplated my old Olympus handheld camera. While it holds sentimental value and memories of countless moments captured, it has become quite outdated compared to the technology available today. I found myself at a crossroads, unsure whether to donate it to someone who might appreciate its nostalgic charm or just dispose of it. I suppose I'll wait and see how I feel about it in the coming days.
On a brighter note, I made tangible progress on the deck project. I continued the demolition work, feeling a sense of satisfaction as I stripped away the old materials to make way for something new. It was fulfilling to see the transformation taking shape, even in a small way. In addition to that, I dove into some serious culinary adventures in the kitchen. I meticulously prepared a feast that included Cajun potato wedges, juicy Parmesan wings, spicy Hellfire cowboy candy, and savory garlic mushrooms. The culinary experiment was mostly a success; everything turned out quite delicious; except for the cowboy candy. I'll let that one drift into oblivion. It was certainly an interesting idea, combining jalapenos, onions, red bell pepper, and a melange of spices with honey and brown sugar. Unfortunately, the result was far from palatable, especially since I used raw ingredients. I genuinely enjoy jalapenos, but fresh and raw ones just don't suit my palate. Nevertheless, chalking it up as a learning experience is important.
As the day wore on and I found myself alone at home; my family were either busy with work or attending to their own affairs; I decided to let loose a bit and embrace the solitude. I retrieved my saxophone from its case, wiped off the dust, and spent some time playing whatever came to mind, letting the music flow through me. It was a refreshing way to express myself. Afterward, I dedicated about an hour to hitting the heavy bag, an activity that certainly wore me out but left me feeling invigorated.
As evening fell, I settled down with a piping hot pizza and indulged in a cinematic journey through The Hobbit trilogy. The films whisked me away to fantastical lands, providing a welcome distraction, even if my mood remained somewhat unchanged. I've learned to cope with it better, but I still wish I had accomplished more throughout the day. At the same time, part of me longs for a bit more relaxation. It seems that in life, it's often a balancing act where you can't quite have everything you desire.
Frogtown?...
..again?......

..Back at it, and ouch.....
I would love to say that things are running smoothly, but that wouldn't be true. They feel more like a century-old clock with faulty gears. Recently, we experienced a serious shoplifting incident that involved the police and resulted in two people being taken away in handcuffs. We had to restock a total of seven baskets worth of items, and they kept coming in droves. Everything has been frustrating, and we are still operating on emergency generator power.
I feel powerless to make a difference because many people don't seem to care. We still have our regular customers who wander around, and there are those who do everything they can to avoid actual work. Some employees are talking to friends and relatives on their headsets while they're in customer-facing positions, and others are tossing cold and frozen items into the bins without informing anyone. Hopefully, tomorrow will be better.
..The personal front....
On the personal front, things weren't much better. I managed to get through my morning routine and even turned on Spotify to play some new music through my headset while I handled other tasks. However, meditation was a failure, and my exercise consisted of just hitting the bag; I didn't accomplish anything else. I'm trying to focus on one task a day, and I moved the Mason jars into my work area. Overall, it was a pretty mundane day.
Whomever has the biggest attitude...

..Or do they lose?.....
I don't know if it's the phase of the moon, Mercury in retrograde, or something in the water, but everyone seems to be in a bad mood today. We're still on emergency generator power, which allows us to access the freezer. However, the off-site refrigerated truck is causing problems. Management has a negative attitude, and those overseeing them seem just as unfriendly. The staff is doing everything they can to avoid actual work, and this has become the norm. Once again, excessive materials had to be restocked, and people were taking their time to do it. I'm trying my best to stay calm, but it's not easy. I know this situation will change soon because it isn't helping the store, and someone is bound to notice.
..The big suck....
Right now, the forecast for rideshare services this week looks terrible. It seems like it's one issue after another, and I believe this is how things will be for the rest of the week. I'm trying to think that this is all a result of the recent power outage, but I'm not entirely convinced. My routine has become monotonous: I go to work, come home, sleep, and then repeat it all over again the next day. In just two days, I'll have two days off, and I'm hoping to reset and get back into a positive mindset. Unfortunately, I haven't made any progress on my projects, writing, or anything else.
I recently started a new T-booster that I got with a free coupon, so we'll see if it helps. Aging is not easy, and this coming month, I'll be turning 61. Although I'm trying not to let it affect me this year, I am still aware of it. I would like to cook something during my days off, but I just don't have the time or energy to figure anything out.
Push things to the limit...
..and beyond......

..Life is work.....
The most significant issue I'm facing right now is exhaustion; both physical and mental. I'm beginning to realize that part of the problem stems from the store where I work. Although the area is not the best, we are a small island in a sea of desperate people. We are surrounded by neighborhoods that have a negative impact, which also affects our store. While we don't have issues with sales or financial intake, the quality of our customers is lacking.
Most of our staff, including myself, come from outside the area, so we are somewhat insulated from the neighborhood's negativity. However, some of my coworkers have noticed this disconnect and have developed a negative attitude themselves. For our store to succeed, changes are necessary, but I worry that those changes may come slowly.
..Move along, nothing to see....
This morning, I got my basics done after getting up late. I even tried to start writing one of my short stories, but my heart wasn't in it. There's an investigation going on related to a club I used to visit over a decade ago, which led to a visit from federal authorities. They made it clear that I wasn't in any trouble or under investigation, but they were looking for witnesses connected to some federal crimes.
Basically, they provided me with a list of people and asked if I knew any of them or had been in contact with them. Thankfully, even though a few names were familiar, I haven't spoken to any of them in more than ten years. I was very intrigued by the list, but it's not my place to share that story; I'll tell it if it becomes national news.
Their main concern was finding witnesses who could testify that young men and women were being bartered into slavery. Since the club had a BDSM focus, the term "slavery" can be quite fluid. It's uncertain whether they fully understand this, but it wasn't my responsibility to educate them, so I provided the most straightforward and honest answers I could.
Unfortunately, this interaction completely threw off my morning, and I ended up scrambling to make it to work on time. I'm really looking forward to my upcoming two days off.

..Calm seas.....
Things have calmed down for the most part, but they are far from perfect. Then again, what is perfect? The store is operating quite well with effective management in place and everyone fulfilling their responsibilities. However, there is still an issue with the cold goods, and there isn't much that can be done about it, but efforts are being made. Overall, it was an uneventful day, and I welcome the uneventful.
..Wrap it up and get on with it....
I overslept a bit, but I was able to recover quickly. For lunch, I had fried chicken, and it really hit the spot. This morning, I took some time to finalize the September blog foundation, which you can find linked at the bottom of the page under the heading.
After work, I tried to do some rideshare driving, but I ended up sitting for a full hour with no rides, even with turbo mode activated. I have the next two days off, and I'm planning to tackle my long to-do list. I'm going to see how much I can get accomplished.
