A broken day...
I was fully immersed in the flow of things, adrenaline pumping and productivity soaring, when I had to pause my momentum to meet Laura at Firestone to drop off her car. Eager to get back on the road, I hurried through the process, but I could sense a shift in the air. That was alright, though, as I had started to feel a bit overwhelmed by the pace I was keeping.
At present, we find ourselves facing a significant shortage of drivers. Each time I glance at the heat map for the Memphis area, the screen is ablaze with red. Red signifies an urgent demand, a bustling city where rides outnumber the drivers available to meet them. It's as if something peculiar is unfolding, casting an unusual atmosphere over the rideshare community. I can't help but think that the rising fuel prices play a part in this dilemma, alongside the implementation of the safety task force that has recently engaged Memphis. It's almost as if I've stepped into an alternate reality, where the usual rhythm has been disrupted and the streets buzz with a tension I can hardly explain.
Drudging along....
Pushing through the day felt like an uphill battle, but the struggle only intensified once I reached home. I dropped off the car at Firestone, a place that is become way too familiar, but after about three hours of anxious waiting, I received a notification that they wouldn't be able to complete the repairs today. The air conditioning issue was more complicated than anticipated, requiring a specialist to diagnose the problem. They promised clarity by tomorrow, but that didn't ease my mind.
I've already rearranged my schedule for the day ahead so that my wife can use the car while I take a half-day off work. It's a small inconvenience, but one that weighs on me. While I waited for the call from Firestone, I tried to make productive use of my time, yet relaxation remained elusive. The anticipation of the impending car repairs gnawed at me, compounded by the mounting tension from the ongoing safety task force discussions here in Memphis. There's a palpable sense of unease in the air. I can only hope that the rest of the week brings some much-needed clarity and calm.
This is a bit...
..of a slice of hell....

Half-day...
The main focus of my day was to push myself to the limit, striving to cover as much ground as possible before I needed to return home and relinquish the car to Laura for her day's activities. Surprisingly, the day unfolded far better than I had anticipated. I found a steady rhythm, allowing me to really dig deep and work toward my goal with determination. Initially, I was worried about taking time off and the potential financial implications that could come with it, but thankfully, those concerns proved unfounded. Everything went smoothly throughout the day, with no unforeseen hiccups. I managed to return home just in the nick of time, feeling a sense of accomplishment and relief.
And that would be a NOPE....
The highlight of the day was supposed to be the much-anticipated repairs on the Spark, but things took a turn for the worse. Upon inspection, it became evident that the rear brakes had completely seized, necessitating a full replacement. While this is a job I could have tackled myself under normal circumstances, the car's condition rendered it unsafe to drive, and my limited experience with that particular brake system left me feeling uncertain. Thus, we had no choice but to entrust the work to the skilled technicians at Firestone, along with the hefty price tag that naturally comes with expert assistance.
As for the air conditioning, that's a different saga altogether. The cost for repairs is staggering; twice that of the brake replacement. Given the steep price, it seems replacing the unit is simply not a feasible option at this time. With autumn just around the corner, I can only hope that the cooler temperatures will provide some relief until I can sort out a replacement vehicle.
Unfortunately, the timing of these repairs has left me feeling quite drained, having lost a significant amount of sleep during the ordeal. As I brace myself for the days ahead, I face them with a lingering weariness, unsure of when I'll be able to catch up on rest.
Isn't this fun...
..no, really....

Tires and such, moving on
Since it's Friday, I typically leave work at my usual time and find myself home in the early afternoon, ready to unwind after a long week. However, last night, I decided to get a head start, hoping to seize the evening and tackle my tasks proactively. As I pulled out of the driveway, a creeping sense of unease washed over me when I noticed the tire air indicator lights flickering ominously on my dashboard.
Long story short, my plans quickly unravelled as I had to make a pit stop at the local tire shop to replace two front tires. This unexpected detour threw my entire day off-kilter. Yet, perhaps there was a silver lining. I ended up getting some precious extra sleep while waiting for time to roll out, a small blessing in disguise.
When I finally hit the road again in the late afternoon, I was completely unprepared for the whirlwind that awaited me. The evening was a frenetic rush, as rides came pouring in one after another, back-to-back, and each one was a sizable fare. It felt exhilarating yet overwhelming, if I hadn't run out of time by the end of the night, I could have easily doubled my earnings.
As I navigated through the bustling streets, I could feel the adrenaline coursing through my veins, a sense of accomplishment washing over me as I managed to catch up from the day and a half that I had fallen behind. Remarkably, I even found myself moving ahead, a feat I hadn't anticipated.
I glanced at the projections for tomorrow, and they looked promising, hinting at a potentially similar opportunity. Time will tell if I can replicate this success, but for now, I can't help but feel a flicker of excitement about what lies ahead.
Frustrated, but dealing....
I find myself grappling with frustration on multiple fronts, but I believe I'm managing to keep it in check for now. It feels like an invisible monster lurking in the shadows, ready to pounce at any moment. Today required a considerable amount of meditation and a touch of physical exercise to shake off that gnawing sense of unease. Ultimately, I think I've subdued it for the time being, but I know this is just a temporary fix. Sooner or later, I'll need to confront these frustrations head-on, yet the thought of doing so fills me with reluctance.
To add to my irritation, I haven't been able to make it to the gym this week, and that frustrates me even more given how chaotic my schedule has been. I had more than a day and a half of downtime this week, and I was bracing myself for a frantic scramble to catch up by Sunday night. Thankfully, last night lifted that burden. I managed to tackle my gaming obligations and a few other tasks that had been weighing on me. Before I settle in for some rest and then head into my overnight shift, I'm considering adopting this routine for a few more days to see if I can manage it. If it proves to be as rewarding as it was on this shift, it might be worth pursuing.
Is it good?...
..or is it bad?....

Doubleback, Baby!
The car breaking down might have been a twist of fate. Due to the timing of the breakdown and the subsequent repairs, I had to completely rearrange my schedule for the week, which forced me to shift my work to the evenings. When I first dipped my toes into driving for Uber, I experimented with a few evening shifts, and I found them to be quite tedious at best. The rides were scarce, and many passengers seemed oblivious to the challenges we drivers face.
However, things have changed dramatically since then. Last night, I decided to take to the roads overnight, and I was pleasantly surprised to discover a vibrant demand. To capitalize on this newfound energy, I doubled back for the evening shift, and both rides were nothing short of phenomenal. I experienced a plethora of long rides, all bolstered by significant boost earnings that made the night even more rewarding.
Intrigued by this promising trend, I plan to adjust my schedule for a week to explore whether these results hold true on weekdays, not just on weekends. If the pattern continues, my approach to driving could shift rather swiftly, opening up a new chapter in my Uber journey.
I am not forever young....
As much as I'd love to claim immortality, it's simply not true. I returned to the house before the first light of dawn began to peek through the curtains, I did not see a delicate glow casting shadows that danced across the living room. Tiptoeing through the familiar space, I aimed to remain unnoticed, waiting for the household to stir from its slumber. The night at work had been surprisingly rewarding, and I had hoped to indulge in at least seven hours of restorative sleep. However, as often is the case with daytime rest, those hopes were dashed, I found sleep eluded me, and I managed only five fitful hours.
Nevertheless, I rose once more, shaking off the fatigue, and hit the road again, eager for another fulfilling evening shift. I've realized that adopting this unconventional schedule has granted me extra hours, a curious benefit that I'm still trying to comprehend. For the time being, I've decided to embrace this shift reversal for the week, curious to see how it shapes my routine and experience. Let's see what unfolds in this new rhythm of life.
Is it over yet?...
..yes, I think it is....
October 05, 2025
Push for the goal.
Today was a productive day for me; I took the opportunity to catch up on tasks and astonishingly surpassed my high goal for the week. In fact, I obliterated it! This week has felt like an experiment, especially considering I faced nearly 36 hours of downtime due to car breakdowns with both of our vehicles. Despite these setbacks, I managed to come out on top when all was said and done.
I've made a deliberate decision to alter my schedule and start working nights, curious to see if this positive trend will continue. If it does, I will have to engage in some serious reflection, as it would indicate that I've made a significant miscalculation regarding my productivity over the past year. The thought is both daunting and enlightening as I navigate this unexpected turn in my routine.
Tired, but doing well....
Despite the whirlwind of events that unfolded this week and the unexpected extra time off, I find myself feeling weighed down and a bit overwhelmed. Each day feels like an uphill battle just to get moving, but once I push through that initial inertia, I generally find my groove and things start to click into place.
I'm actively working on harmonizing the personal aspects of my life with my professional responsibilities, striving to create a more balanced and fulfilling existence. There are still numerous important projects swirling in my mind, each one demanding my attention and creativity, but the window for completing them has narrowed significantly, forcing me to be strategic about how I fit them into my schedule. It's all part of an ongoing journey, navigating the intricate dance between my ambitions and the reality of time constraints.
New is good...
..isn't it?....
October 06, 2025
Not a great start.
This week is dedicated to experimentation, but it didn't kick off as I had hoped. Don't get me wrong, the heat maps displayed vibrant reds, indicating promising activity throughout most of the evening. However, from the moment I stepped out of my house in the afternoon until I finally returned just past midnight, the rain poured relentlessly. At times, it was merely an irritating drizzle that draped everything in a fine mist, but other moments brought on a torrential downpour, flooding the streets and reducing visibility to mere shadows. I soldiered on, successfully achieving my initial goal, but the constant battering of raindrops wore me down. Ultimately, I decided to call it a night three hours early, surrendering to the wearying grip of the weather.
A tiny bit difficult....
The most challenging aspect of the new schedule is adjusting to sleeping during the day. Despite my efforts with blackout curtains, a faint whisper of daylight manages to seep through, reminding me of the world outside and making it difficult to drift off into a peaceful slumber. If I'm going to commit to this unconventional routine, adapting to these daytime rest periods will be essential. I've begun utilizing a structured sleep-and-nap technique, which has brought some order to my day. I've also started to weave my daily tasks into this new framework, and so far, I'm feeling positive about the outcome. As the clock struck midnight, I returned home, weary yet eager to embrace some rest and mentally prepare for the challenges tomorrow might bring.
October 07, 2025
Day two, and still rolling
Today marks the second day on my new schedule, and I must admit, it's proving to be far more challenging than I anticipated. The routine I've adopted mirrors what I practiced during my time driving a tractor trailer, and I expected a smooth transition. Yet, I've encountered one significant hurdle. The plan is to be on the road by 3:00 PM and to remain active for a solid 12 hours. However, as the clock strikes midnight, the witching hour, I find myself grappling with a wave of exhaustion that washes over me. Safety remains my top priority in these circumstances, and I know that pushing through fatigue is not an option. I'm hopeful that in time, I will adapt to the demands of this new schedule and build the stamina I need to succeed.
Ah, rest....
One of the most significant challenges I'm currently facing is finding a balance between restful moments and my newly hectic work schedule. While I technically have enough hours in the day to squeeze in some much-needed rest, the reality is that my downtime is frequently interrupted and fragmented. I'm juggling several projects simultaneously, each demanding my attention and creative energy, making it feel nearly impossible to carve out uninterrupted time for myself. Despite this whirlwind, I remain optimistic that everything will eventually fall into place. For now, I take solace in maintaining my social media presence and sharing my daily insights, these small gestures provide a sense of accomplishment and connection amidst the chaos. It's a start, and I'm determined to keep moving forward.
October 08, 2025
Someone famous, sort of.
I'm still feeling quite exhausted, but today held an interesting surprise. I had the chance to meet one of the support crew members for Franz Ferdinand, the renowned rock band hailing from across the Atlantic. He was on a mission to capture as many photographs of Memphis as possible, battling against a ticking clock and a dwindling phone battery.
As he made his way from the iconic Stax Museum to the historic Peabody Hotel, I offered to help him out. Our impromptu tour took us past a few legendary landmarks, including the famed Graceland, the opulent home of Elvis Presley, and the legendary Sun Studios, where rock and roll history was made.
The crew member mentioned he would add my name to the list at the theater where they're set to perform tomorrow night. It was a generous offer, and while I appreciated the gesture, I have to admit that their music isn't really my cup of tea. Don't get me wrong; they're undeniably talented performers, just not within the genre I typically enjoy.
Still fighting....
Despite feeling a flicker of excitement today, I can't shake the overwhelming fatigue that has settled in. Adjusting to this new schedule has been more challenging than I expected, and while I have faith that things will improve over time, right now it feels like a steep climb. I'm committed to pushing through this struggle, but I also recognize the importance of prioritizing my safety and well-being. Taking baby steps seems to be the most sensible approach as I navigate this transition. Each small victory can contribute to a stronger foundation for the days ahead.
Today is our anniversary, but we are going to celebrate on Saturday when we both have a bit more time.
Finally Mundane...
..But will it hold?....
October 09, 2025
Early in.
At last, a day that unfolded without any major surprises. I decided to shake things up a bit and headed out to work an hour earlier than usual. You see, as the clock strikes midnight each night, I tend to transform into a pumpkin, utterly drained and unable to focus. It's a strange phenomenon, but I find that my energy plummets as the hour grows late. So, today I took control of the situation, arriving on the road while the sun was high in the sky.
Surprisingly, this change of routine worked wonders. I felt sharp and focused, perfectly on track with my tasks for the week. Everything was flowing smoothly, and I could almost envision the finish line. With a sprinkle of luck, I hope to wrap up tomorrow on a high note, and then I'll be free to relish the weekend ahead, even though I will be working.
A developing plan....
Beyond the daily grind of work, I'm making a conscious effort to streamline my life. A pivotal component of this journey is an upcoming camping trip I'm planning for April. This will not just be an ordinary getaway; it will be a five-day adventure in the heart of Arkansas, a genuine test of my personal endurance and inner self.
I'm envisioning a bare-bones experience, intentionally limiting my use of electronics and communication to immerse myself fully in nature. The thought of disconnecting from the digital world is both thrilling and daunting, but I'm committed to giving it my best shot.
As I ponder over the details, my mind buzzes with excitement about the potential challenges and rewards that lie ahead. However, this ambitious trip hinges on my ability to meet certain goals before April arrives. With that in mind, I'm pressing forward, fueled by determination and anticipation for the adventure that awaits.
Ending with fire...
..and ice....
October 10, 2025
The new normal
I'm really starting to embrace the new schedule. If I could just manage my level of exhaustion come midnight, I truly believe I could take control of this situation. It's becoming increasingly clear that the heavy workload is set to be our new reality. While driving for Uber can be a decent way to earn a living, there simply aren't enough drivers out there, which is beginning to create a significant bottleneck in service. I've noticed surge pricing spikes throughout the day, times when demand is high but drivers are scarce. Unfortunately, I don't anticipate this imbalance improving anytime soon.
Even with the option to rent vehicles through Uber, the limitations are frustrating. Many of the available cars are electric, which confines you to about a six-hour shift due to battery life. This poses a real challenge for anyone trying to make rideshare driving a sustainable job. As the landscape evolves, I believe the company will need to tackle several pressing issues if it wants to maintain its success in this competitive market.
Plans within plans....
I feel like I've finally found a joyful equilibrium in my life with the recent shift in my routine. After some adjustments, I've managed to establish a work-life balance that I believe will grow increasingly beneficial over time. However, I anticipate that it will take a week or two more to fully acclimate to this new rhythm. As I embark on my third week of running every day, I can feel the strain starting to wear on me, I'm definitely starting to feel a bit frazzled around the edges. But every day presents a fresh challenge, and that keeps my spirit engaged.
One of the most exciting aspects of my current focus is the upcoming camping trip in April. I find myself daydreaming about the adventure, mentally going over the details, and planning all the little things that will make it memorable. With six months still left to go, I already feel a spark of enthusiasm igniting within me as I sketch out my plans.
On the flip side, I've run into some frustration with my legend planner. In my search for next year's fresh, blank planner, I've come up empty-handed. As I flipped to the back of my current planner, I was reminded that it's time to order new ones - I hadn't realized just how unprepared I am! I plan to check again tomorrow morning, but I suspect I may indeed be out of luck. Time seems to slip away so quickly; today, I spent much of the morning catching up on neglected tasks, and by the time evening rolled around, I was grateful for a few moments of relaxation to unwind before bed.
October 11, 2025
Push onward
Today, I found myself grappling with some personal matters that took precedence over my work, making it feel somewhat secondary. I didn't manage to get the extra rest I had hoped for before arriving, but surprisingly, I was able to power through the evening without any issues. The clients were generally pleasant, and while the earnings were good, there was always room for improvement. Still, I can't say I have any major complaints.
As the day wore on, a sense of unease started to creep in about the impending Monday; the safety task force is set to descend upon Memphis in full force. This development has sparked conversations among many riders who are understandably concerned. Personally, I don't have a strong opinion on the matter, but I can't shake the feeling that this won't bode well for the city.
Faux Anniversary....
My wife and I decided to celebrate a playful "fake anniversary" today, and we treated ourselves to lunch at the Tokyo Grill. This outing turned out to be the highlight of our day. The food was satisfactory, nothing extraordinary, but certainly enjoyable with generous portions, albeit on the pricier side. Our little culinary adventure into Japanese cuisine felt like a mini escape right in Memphis. However, the excitement left me a bit fatigued, and I found myself yearning for more rest before heading to work. Despite my drowsiness, the day unfolded smoothly, and before I knew it, another day had come to a close.
October 12, 2025
Oye, and some Vey
I had hoped to wrap up the week on a positive note and in good spirits, but unfortunately, that didn't pan out. The highlight, or perhaps the lowlight, of my workday was an unexpected traffic stop that escalated into an overwhelming ordeal. It felt as though I had stumbled into a scene straight out of an action movie, complete with an FBI agent, a DEA operative, a Tennessee sheriff, and a federal marshal, all joined by their extensive support team. The entire situation was not only bewildering but also quite distressing, and I'd rather not delve into the details, as they stir up a wave of frustration within me. This entire encounter seemed like nothing less than a hostile takeover of my day, instilling a sense of apprehension.
However, once I managed to escape the clutches of what felt like a battalion of Stormtroopers, I found my rhythm again and was able to finish the night on a high note, returning home just before midnight. I even accomplished both my low and high goals for the week, which felt satisfying amidst the chaos. Now, I'm eager to focus on the objectives I set for next week. On a slightly lighter note, I've noticed that Uber has changed the way it calculates time. I haven't had the chance to explore this new development in depth yet, but I suspect it might work to my advantage moving forward.
Time for focus....
As is my annual tradition at the start of October, I find myself reflecting on the past year and assessing my progress toward the goals I set. In all honesty, it's been a disappointing endeavor. There's a certain clarity in recognizing your shortcomings: I can confidently say that I've only achieved a mere fraction, probably under 25%, of my aspirations for the year. With just two months left on the calendar, the likelihood of catching up seems almost impossible.
My wife has often pointed out that I frequently set the bar too high, but this year feels different. I made a conscious effort to keep my goals modest in light of my ongoing transition. Yet, despite my best intentions, I've struggled with distractions and an alarming lack of focus that has plagued me throughout the year. As I sifted through my monthly reflections in my legend journal, a recurring theme emerged, time and time again, I noted my waning concentration.
Even with the extensive meditative practices I've embraced, this persistent issue continues to challenge me. As I begin to lay the groundwork for 2026, one thing is abundantly clear: my foremost priority will be to reclaim my focus. The extent of my missed goals this year is alarming, a stark contrast to the consistent progress I've made since I began setting goals back in the 1980s. I'm determined to ensure that such a lapse in motivation and productivity never happens again.
Quick start...
..Here we go....
October 13, 2025
A strong start
I kicked off the week with a burst of energy and nearly achieved my ambitious goal. While I'm aware that maintaining this momentum may be a challenge, I'm fully committed to giving it my all. Today, however, the atmosphere among customers felt somewhat heavy and subdued. There's a palpable tension stemming from the task force that's been actively patrolling Memphis, and I can't help but feel the weight of it during my shifts. I've had my share of encounters with them, each time unfolds in the same frustrating manner, where they methodically sift through my information and subject me to delays that stretch anywhere from 30 to 45 minutes. It's undeniably irritating. On a brighter note, my decision to work nights has been surprisingly effective so far, and I'm holding onto the hope that this arrangement will continue to serve me well for the foreseeable future.
Stuff, you gotta love stuff....
One of the most pressing aspects of my daily routine is ensuring that I achieve at least one meaningful goal each day. Today, I set my sights on two objectives: taking care of the recycling and adding the necessary chemicals to the pool. Thankfully, I was able to tackle both tasks efficiently, allowing me to enjoy some unexpected free time afterward. However, I've found that my moments of relaxation have become a bit problematic, they often feel unproductive. Instead of using this time to rejuvenate my mind and body, I often find myself passively staring at a screen or aimlessly gazing at a blank wall, which isn't beneficial. I need to shift this habit and dedicate my relaxation time to more enriching activities, like meditation, exercise, or engaging in creative pursuits. It's essential for me to transform these moments into opportunities for personal growth and well-being.
No rest...
..for the weary....
October 14, 2025
A split day
Willow returned from Denver today, and her arrival felt like a bittersweet blend of emotions. It was a relief to finally have her home again, and picking her up at the airport was a smooth experience, free of any hiccups. However, her arrival did disrupt the flow of my day significantly. In moments like these, one is often faced with the choice between family and work, and I chose to prioritize family over everything else. While this decision meant sacrificing several prearranged rides, I have absolutely no regrets.
During the day, I had a few brief encounters with the Memphis task force. For the most part, our exchanges were cordial, but I couldn't shake the feeling that their hearts weren't fully in their work. Their faces showed signs of weariness, exhaustion etched into their features, hinting at the strain they've been under. As the week draws to a close, I find myself running short on time and resources, though this was something I had foreseen and prepared for.
Back to the mundane, for now....
I hardly slept at all last night, and the lack of rest took a toll on my day. At work, I forced myself to push through the fatigue, but the weariness lingered like a heavy fog. By the time I walked through my front door, all my energy had evaporated. I managed to tackle my usual responsibilities, cooking dinner, tidying up, but everything felt like a chore, and I couldn't muster the motivation for anything beyond the basics. The thought of curling up with my book or finally catching up on my favorite shows felt distant, as if those delights were reserved for another life. It's been days since I allowed myself that simple pleasure.
Down day...
..without being down....
October 15, 2025
Work takes a backseat
The workday unfolded as a testing ground of patience and endurance, primarily due to the scarce sleep I had managed to snatch amidst the chaos of my personal life. Fortunately, most customers remained at a whisper, their needs straightforward and problem-free. However, there was one memorable exception: a young woman who appeared to be a sorority girl, radiating an air of entitlement as if she were the queen of the universe.
Clad in a flashy outfit that seemed more suitable for a night out on the town than a day at school, she was impossible to ignore. Her voice cut through the subdued atmosphere, demanding my undivided attention. Not content with mere acknowledgment, she insisted on receiving compliments, proclaiming loudly enough that my words would bolster her self-esteem. She even leveled a thinly veiled threat, warning that I would face her wrath in the form of a one-star review if I failed to shower her with the praise she sought.
I stood my ground, unwavering against her manipulative tactics, and made my stance clear. Much to my surprise, despite our interaction and my refusal to indulge her demands, she ultimately awarded me a five-star rating. Just another day in the unpredictable world of customer service.
A busy day....
The personal portion of my day was a whirlwind, starting with a much-needed oil change that had been on my to-do list for far too long. The early morning air was crisp as I made my way to the mechanic, the comforting scent of fresh coffee wafting from nearby shops. Afterward, I headed to my doctor's office for a checkup and to discuss my medication. That turned out to be quite frustrating; my doctor recommended switching to a new prescription that comes with a staggering price tag. Even with insurance, a three-week supply costs more than my weekly earnings, which is simply out of the question for me.
Once I left the doctor's office feeling a mix of relief and annoyance, I drove to Walmart to tackle the errands I had been putting off for weeks. The bright lights and bustling aisles greeted me as I navigated through the store, gathering essentials and not indulging in any impulse buys. After returning home, I welcomed the chance to recharge with a short nap while waiting for the HVAC inspection to wrap up for the year. The hum of the technician working in the background was a soothing reminder of the comforts of home. Once everything was squared away, the familiar routine of preparing for my night shift took over, prompting me to gather my belongings and head out the door once again.
October 16, 2025
Now, this is normal
Today was anything but ordinary, yet it felt surprisingly more typical than the chaotic days I've been navigating recently, so I'm grateful for it. While I find myself a bit behind on my goals, I remain optimistic that by Friday, I can hit my minimum target. Achieving that would grant me a sense of relief going into the weekend, providing me with the opportunity, aside from the day off I've planned, to earn a bit of extra cash for the kitty.
On a less pleasant note, I once again had to face the Memphis security task force today, and the experience is becoming increasingly frustrating. I'm doing my utmost to avoid any entanglements with them, but each interaction feels weightier, amplifying the urge to speak my mind. Yet, I know all too well that the words I crave to express wouldn't lead me down a favorable path.
Back to something like normal....
I'm currently grappling with a significant issue: I'm feeling a pervasive sense of melancholy coupled with a nagging physical discomfort. It's difficult to pinpoint the exact source of my unease, but I have a nagging suspicion that my mental state is intensifying my physical symptoms, or perhaps it's the reverse. This uncertainty is becoming increasingly frustrating, and I'm eager to unravel this tangled web of feelings soon. On a brighter note, despite my struggles, I managed to navigate the day with minimal setbacks, and I even checked several items off my weekend to-do list, which brought a small sense of accomplishment amidst the chaos.
Pushing through...
..a time to rest....
October 17, 2025
The hard push
One thing that really frustrates me about Uber is the way quests are structured. This morning, right at 4:00 AM, a new quest kicked off, aiming for sixty runs within a tight timeframe. The problem is, I frequently end up with outlying runs that consume a considerable amount of time. While I may have high-quality trips during these runs, the quantity just doesn't add up. I have until Monday morning at the same hour to complete these challenges, and since I have tomorrow off, I've only managed to wrap up eighteen runs so far. It's starting to feel pretty unlikely that I'll hit the target and snag that extra cash. I could always adjust my plans and decide to work tomorrow, but I really don't think that would be in the best interest of my mental health. After finishing my work close to midnight, I headed home, eagerly anticipating my day off and the chance to relax and recharge.
Just looking forward....
Today, my primary focus was consumed by the relentless demands of work. I barely carved out any time to nurture my personal needs, as I felt an overwhelming urge to simply push through the day. Before heading out, I dedicated a few moments to deep meditation, hoping to calm the storm of negativity swirling in my mind, yet it proved ineffective. I still feel ensnared in a frustrating rut that seems deeper than ever. After enduring 21 consecutive days of work without a single break, it's becoming increasingly evident that this grind may be taking its toll on my well-being. I can only hope that tomorrow brings a semblance of improvement and a shift in my mood.
October 18, 2025
Thinking only
Today, as I sat at home, the only thing tethering me to my job was the nagging thought that I should be at work instead. With the circumstances weighing on me, it became clear that my time could have been better spent engaging in my usual responsibilities. Instead, I found myself dedicating a considerable chunk of my day to completing an application for a solid waste worker position with the city of Bartlett. The application process was surprisingly thorough and demanded my full attention, stretching over two intense hours. Yet, I pushed through the complexities and finally submitted the application, feeling a sense of accomplishment before turning my focus to the rest of my day.
Not as planned....
The title for today evokes both mice and men, subtly suggesting that even the best-laid plans can spiral into chaos. Regrettably, that proved to be true for me. I had envisioned a productive and enjoyable day off, but life had other ideas in store.
I set out with a plan, expecting to spend only a little time on the application for a Bartlett position. However, I quickly found myself immersed in the process, which devoured a substantial portion of my morning. Once I finally clicked "submit," I excitedly turned my attention to cleaning my car, but my enthusiasm was soon derailed by the ongoing frustrations with the Memphis Task Force.
The air was crisp as I arrived at the car wash, brimming with anticipation for a shiny, freshly cleaned vehicle. However, my hopes were dashed when I learned they had a water issue and I was unable to wash my car. Disheartened but determined, I decided to stop by Leslie Pools to gather supplies for closing the pool as the chill of autumn began to settle in.
Feeling a bit defeated, I made my way over to Goodwill, hoping to stumble upon a hidden treasure. Unfortunately, I left empty-handed. However, my luck changed when I visited the Salvation Army, where I discovered an amazing pair of boots, sturdy and stylish, that I could see myself wearing every day.
To cap off my errands, I swung by Gold Rush. There, I picked up a delightful set of bottles adorned with eyedropper tops, perfect for my various DIY endeavors. Among my finds was a heavy, sealed box that I was curious about. To my surprise, it turned out to contain an air mattress. While I already own a reliable one, now I'm left with two. I'm uncertain whether I'll take the new mattress camping or simply allow it to collect dust in the corner of my garage.
Finally, I returned home and rolled up my sleeves, dedicating the rest of my day to washing my car in the comfort of my driveway and preparing to close the pool. As I examined the pool's condition, I realized that closing it would be a more labor-intensive task than I had anticipated. It will take about a week, as I'll need to monitor the water for five days before I can confidently apply the cover. Though it seems tedious, this process will enable me to remove all debris and ensure the water is sparkling clear before tucking it away for its winter slumber.

Back at it
Today's goal was to accomplish my weekly objective, and I narrowly succeeded, feeling a mix of relief and satisfaction. As I had anticipated, the journey involved traversing long distances, with only fleeting moments of progress, which tested my patience. However, I approached the day with lowered expectations, so the achievement felt like a delightful surprise. The atmosphere was serene, with my riders exhibiting a calm demeanor, contributing to the tranquil setting. Meanwhile, the weather shifted into a refreshing, crisp fall breeze, carrying the earthy scent of fallen leaves and invigorating my spirit. I am truly grateful for this perfect backdrop as I worked towards my goal.
No time for foolishness....
I'm back at work, but already a longing for another day off tugs at me. Despite getting a solid amount of sleep before starting my shift, an unshakeable weariness crept in halfway through, making the hours drag on. Right now, my main focus is on organizing my Legend Planner for 2026. I've decided to kick off my new year on November 1st of this year, hoping for a fresh start. Looking back at the past year, I can't help but feel a twinge of disappointment at how little I accomplished. This realization has ignited a determination in me to make the coming year a much more fruitful one.
As I mentioned, the fall weather has graced us with its beautiful presence, the crisp air, vibrant leaves, and the golden light casting a warm glow all around. Before leaving for the day, I managed to cross a few more items off my ever-growing to-do list, but I can already sense the fatigue setting in, hinting that it may take me a little while to fully recharge.
Good start...
..bad finish....

In the zone, then not
I was having an exceptionally good day when suddenly I hit an unscalable wall. It all began when I picked up a passenger, a woman traveling with a young child who was happily chattering in the backseat. What started as a seemingly straightforward ride from Point A to Point B quickly spiraled into an unexpected series of stops. Just as we neared the original destination, I received a message that altered our course entirely.
We made our first stop to drop off the child, who waved goodbye with an innocent smile before hopping out. From there, the journey took on a routine of its own: we continued to the second stop and picked up another little passenger. This cycle repeated six more times, each drop-off signaling the arrival of a new child ready for their evening at childcare. It dawned on me that she was utilizing Uber as a service to transport young children, earning a neat $20 per delivery to ensure their safe arrival.
Strikingly, while my fare reflected a modest $15.95 for the trip, she raked in a whopping $140 for her efforts. Although this practice didn't technically breach any company policies, I felt compelled to report it, driven by a nagging sense of fairness.
As I pressed on through the rest of the evening, I came close to hitting my ambitious earnings goal for the day, but I could feel the heaviness of exhaustion settling in my bones. Amidst the fatigue, one ride stood out like a beacon of intrigue: an escort from Southaven who offered me a rather tempting proposition that I need to mull over. More on that later.
Already tired....
Today unfolded with a sense of quiet routine on a personal level. Before heading to work, I dedicated some time to immersing myself in the comforting task of organizing my library, carefully sorting through books and rediscovering long-forgotten titles that sparked nostalgia. I was also able to check off a few minor tasks from my to-do list, which felt satisfying.
In addition, I unpacked bottles of bright chemicals, the unmistakable scent wafting through the air, that I'll use to winterize the pool. However, I still need to figure out the tricky details of sealing the intake and outtake holes, a crucial step before I can fully shut everything down for the season. It's only my second day back at work out of a grueling stretch of 21, but I can already feel a heaviness in my eyelids, a hint of fatigue creeping in.
Running low...
..running deep....

Just treading water right now
Today at work was a mix of monotony and irritation. I felt like I was merely ticking boxes, unable to tap into that productive flow that usually fuels my day. Words fail to capture the depths of my experience, but the core sentiment lingers: frustration reigned, and for reasons I couldn't quite grasp. Despite the haze of distraction, I persevered, pushing myself to meet at least my minimal goals before finally deciding to call it a day, eager to escape the fog of unease that had enveloped me.
Yeah, more water here as well....
Today was a peculiar day, filled with a sense of disarray that seeped into both my personal life and work. It felt as if I were the fool from the tarot deck, wandering aimlessly into the vast expanse of the unknown, while everything around me continued to move on with seamless precision. My thoughts swirled in a chaotic dance, and though I know I must push through this fog and hone in on my goals, the weight of this moment feels almost insurmountable. As November 1st approaches, I envision a renewed focus and clarity on my ambitions, convinced that this period of quiet reflection is merely my mind's way of gearing up for the challenges that lie ahead.

Chaos, what a rush
Never call out to the universe for chaos, because chaos will certainly respond. This morning, as I stepped out of my front door, the sun was high in the sky, casting a golden hue over everything. I felt perfectly on schedule, but as I turned the key in my ignition, a sinking feeling washed over me, I had a flat tire. The car shuddered, an ominous reminder that plans can change in an instant.
With determination, I cautiously navigated the streets to Firestone, my heart racing with the anxiety of lost time. Each bump in the road jolted my patience, and what turned out to be a minor inconvenience stretched into a two-hour ordeal, filled with the hum of machinery and the aroma of rubber. Yet, to my surprise, despite that setback, I found a way to keep my day on track.
In stark contrast to yesterday's monotonous rhythm, the unexpected disruption injected a thrilling unpredictability into my routine. Was this shift a blessing or a curse? As I reflect on the day's unfolding events, I realize that the answer might not be as clear-cut. Only time will tell how this chaotic chapter plays out.
Something new....
Despite losing two precious hours at work today, I managed to meet my goals and still returned home at a reasonable hour. The highlight of my day? I have an interview tomorrow with the city of Bartlett for a position in their sanitation department. Yes, I'm 60 years old and applying to be a garbage collector, a role that may surprise some. However, as I reflect on the diverse array of jobs I've held throughout the years - including a decade spent as an environmental engineer for an organic recycling company, I realize that working in sanitation has the potential to be one of the most rewarding roles I've ever pursued.
I'm genuinely excited about this upcoming interview and the opportunities it may present. Word around town has it that there are several positions available, and I'm eager to dive into what possibilities could unfold. As I prepare for the big day, I find myself contemplating the best way to present myself. Should I opt for a formal attire that conveys professionalism, or go for a more relaxed, working-man look that reflects my hands-on experience? It's a decision I'm still wrestling with, but I plan to reach a conclusion in the morning when I stand before my closet, ready to dress for success.
October 23, 2025
Today was a push
Today's word is "PUSH." Lately, I've been feeling an overwhelming urge for a break, but considering I just had one last week, I'm still two weeks away from being able to escape the daily grind again. It's proving to be quite a challenge! The lack of sleep is catching up with me, and every hour at work drags on painfully, like the screech of fingernails on a chalkboard. I'm exhausted, yet I'm determined to power through. I can see the finish line of my goal in the distance, and that glimmer of hope keeps my spirits up. I believe that, despite the struggle, everything will turn out just fine.
An event....
Today marked an exciting milestone as I had an interview with the City of Bartlett for a waste management position. There are several roles available, and I'm particularly being considered for the operation of the claw truck, which I find to be an intriguing opportunity.
In the days leading up to the interview, I wrestled with my choice of attire, torn between the comfort of casual jeans and a t-shirt and the professionalism of a formally dressed outfit. Ultimately, I settled on a sleek black ensemble, complemented by my stylish new boots, which made me feel both confident and polished.
During the interview, I felt a positive energy and hope that I made a good impression, though I know it's a waiting game now, I'll likely have to hold my breath for another 20 days before I receive any news about their decision.
After the interview, I returned home and indulged in a quick nap to recharge before heading to work. The brief rest helped to alleviate some of the day's tension, leaving me feeling a bit more refreshed, though it didn't completely erase the anticipation buzzing in my mind.
Mission complete...
..on to the next....

Endless days
The quest commenced this morning with an ambitious target of completing 50 rides within my current demographic. Typically, I approach these challenges with confidence, expecting a smooth sailing experience. However, this morning quickly revealed itself to be a different story. When quests kick off, I'm often dispatched to far-off locations to pick up high-priced fares, which usually makes the effort feel worth it. Even on days when I don't quite hit the quest requirements, the earnings tend to balance out, so I usually keep my worries at bay. Unfortunately, today was a stark contrast to my usual experience. I found myself constantly sent on lengthy drives only to secure low-paying fares, which proved to be incredibly frustrating and disheartening. Despite these setbacks, I remain optimistic about reaching my goal by the end of the weekend, though I anticipate it will be a tough journey filled with its own set of challenges.
Goal met, reward time....
At the moment, my personal life feels fairly quiet. Recently, I received a check from the state, essentially a refund for some funds I thought I'd lost. Initially, I was tempted to indulge myself by buying something from my Amazon wishlist. I even went so far as to explore a few items and added them to my cart. But after giving it some thought, I decided to rethink my approach. I removed those items and told Laura to allocate the money toward our house fund instead. I don't think I'm at a stage for celebrations just yet.
Today, during my workday, I took a much-needed break and treated myself to some delicious Chinese takeout using my cash tips. It was something I'd been craving for quite a while. Once I got home, savoring that meal felt like a well-deserved reward for a job well done. Though I'm still battling fatigue, I'm learning to navigate through it, and that's okay.
Feet?...
..or is that Defeat?....

Rainy days
I pushed myself as hard as I could under the relentless downpour, but I fell woefully short of both my weekly target and the quest goal. The weather was merciless, with sheets of rain cascading from the sky, creating an almost surreal atmosphere. It struck me that it hadn't rained in what felt like ages, leading to a treacherous buildup of slick oil on the asphalt. As soon as the first raindrops began to fall, chaos unfolded across the Memphis area; cars were spinning out in every direction as drivers struggled to maintain control. I witnessed a series of minor accidents, a crumpled bumper here, a scuffed fender there, and a few more serious incidents that sent my heart racing. Ironically, our task force seemed to be absent amidst the chaos, a fact that I couldn't help but note, although I'm not quite ready to vent about that just yet. Despite all these challenges, I persevered, reminding myself that today is just today, and tomorrow brings a fresh start.
Screaming black meanies...
The Beatles famously dubbed them the "screaming yellow meanies," but mine are far less vibrant; I'll refer to them as the "screaming black meanies." This perfectly captures the gloom that has enveloped me today. Strangely enough, I'm not entirely disheartened; after all, I had been traversing life under a persistent dark cloud for quite some time, yet the last couple of weeks had brought a refreshing clarity and positivity. I had sensed that the return of my shadowy mood was inevitable.
It's hard to overlook the weighty issues plaguing our nation, which have sparked a restless frustration within me. Additionally, the weather has turned menacing, mirroring the ominous presence of an ancient raptor poised to strike at an unsuspecting rabbit. There's an unsettling quality to this storm that I can't quite decipher. Just before dusk, the sky morphed into a surreal shade of green, a haunting color I haven't witnessed in ages. Rain fell abruptly, almost as if the heavens had unleashed a cascade from an invisible bucket; one moment, I was standing in stillness, and the next, I was drenched in an unexpected deluge, only for it to cease as suddenly as it began. Perhaps it's just a clash of some ancient gods waging war in the skies. Who can say for certain?

More rain, but success
Today felt distinctly like the day of overly affectionate sorority girls, their laughter and exuberance echoing in the air. I found myself transporting three lively groups of them, each wrapped up in their own world of camaraderie and peculiar antics. Some were chatting animatedly on their phones with their significant others, their voices dripping with playful innuendos, while others clustered in pairs or small circles, indulging in spontaneous make-out sessions that seemed to defy the surrounding chaos.
In a world filled with uncertainties, maybe they were simply seeking a moment of joy and release. I chose to remain a silent spectator, content to let their energy wash over me without interference, as they didn't beckon me into their spirited mischief. Despite the storms brewing outside, which rumbled ominously in the distance, my day unfolded smoothly.
By the end, I not only met but exceeded both my quest and financial goals for the week. It was a satisfying achievement, one that left me ready and eager to dive into another day full of surprises.
Just days away...
Beyond the antics of the sorority girls, a weighty conversation was unfolding, steeped in urgency and desperation. Right now, a looming crisis casts a shadow over countless lives: on November 1st, the current administration plans to halt the issuance of SNAP benefits due to the government shutdown. This maneuver appears to be a calculated tactic by those in power, aiming to coerce the left into signing their proposed document without engaging in meaningful negotiation, an aggressive "my way or the highway" ultimatum.
The gravity of the situation lies in the realization that if the Democrats capitulate to this document, harboring a misguided belief that Republicans will eventually budge on health care issues, they are stepping into a trap. History has shown that such concessions seldom yield positive outcomes. The current political landscape feels increasingly reminiscent of an abusive relationship, with the Republicans wielding power like a battered spouse, ruthlessly seeking to force compliance and silence dissent. So far, the Democrats have managed to hold their ground, but whether they can maintain this stance remains a precarious question.
What resonates most deeply with me is the stark reality that as of November 1st, the administration will effectively strip away food security for 40 million people. This decision is not just morally questionable; it poses a significant threat to economic stability. The administration fails, or perhaps chooses to acknowledge that SNAP benefits serve as a lifeline, injecting vital funds into the economy. The ripple effects of withdrawing such a substantial amount of money from circulation are bound to manifest in unforeseen consequences, creating a backlash that the administration will likely come to regret.
As I grapple with these frustrations, I recognize that I might be hurling some harsh criticisms here. There is so much to unpack, and this feels like the perfect opportunity for a passionate outburst. However, amid this turmoil, my daily life is consumed by the grind of work and the need for rest. I will do a rant box at a later time.
Not good...
..not good at all....

Working the hustle
Today was a bit of a challenge as I battled through some nagging physical ailments, but I persevered and ultimately met my goals. It's the beginning of a new week, and I'm off to a strong start, which brings a sense of optimism and motivation. Although a break isn't in the cards for me this weekend, I'm eagerly anticipating the well-deserved respite I'll have next weekend. Overall, the riders were exceptionally well-behaved today, and any day I can reflect on that is certainly a good day in my book.
It's just physical...
Today, I devoted my entire focus to my physical well-being as I grappled with a persistent chest cold. The thick congestion weighs heavily on my chest, making each breath feel labored and uncomfortable, a sign I'm all too familiar with. Experiencing this discomfort is never pleasant, and based on my past encounters, I know it can linger anywhere from five to seven days. The thought of enduring this for the week ahead fills me with dread.
However, as I look toward the future, I'm determined to initiate my new year's plan, even if it is still November. This new chapter means embracing a more structured and organized approach to my daily routine. While I feel a mix of uncertainty and hope about the potential benefits, I'm resolved to give it my all and see where this journey leads me.
10 hours...
..and counting....

Pushing onward
Today was a challenging day. I wasn't feeling well, but I don't have the luxury of taking a day off, so I pushed through a ten-hour shift. I was relieved that everything went smoothly without any incidents. With Halloween only three days away, I expect it to be an interesting evening. I hope to feel better by then.
Facing limits...
My physical discomfort is an overwhelming burden that permeates nearly every aspect of my life, robbing me of the precious leisure time I once enjoyed. Each morning, I find myself mustering every ounce of energy just to shift into the right mindset for a productive day at work. It feels like an uphill battle as I struggle to gather the mental strength to tackle my responsibilities. Once the workday finally concludes, I feel utterly depleted, as if every drop of vitality has been drained from my body. I can hardly summon the motivation to do more than sit in silence, staring blankly into space, lost in a fog of exhaustion. Deep down, I remind myself that this is only a temporary chapter in my life, and I cling to the hope that relief will come soon.
What can we add?...
..ah, yes. Rain!....
October 29, 2025
A dreary drive
Even though I'm already feeling the weight of illness pressing down on me, an unsettling curiosity lingers, what else could the universe possibly throw my way? It didn't take long for that answer to reveal itself. The clouds rolled in thick and heavy, swirling across the sky like a dense, gray stew, but they withheld their fury. Instead of a torrential downpour, the rain fell persistently, just enough to irritate rather than drench. It was the kind of rain that toyed with us, not heavy enough to warrant cranking the windshield wipers to full speed, yet too relentless for the intermittent setting, an endless cycle of annoyance that felt like the universe was toying with my patience.
The dreariness of the day seemed to permeate the air, casting a gloomy shadow over my riders. Their silence was palpable, each lost in their thoughts, and I couldn't recall a single smile gracing their faces throughout the long hours. The atmosphere was thick with shared melancholy, reinforcing the sense that sometimes, no matter how hard we try, the world can feel heavy and unyielding.
Isn't that Wizard?...
The title of this paragraph intrigued me deeply, although its origin remains a mystery. I was endeavoring to articulate my growing frustration and how my physical ailments have begun to weigh on my mental well-being. What I initially anticipated would be a brief bout of discomfort has lingered, casting a shadow over my emotional landscape. The creeping sensation of hopelessness has settled in, filling my mind with images of desolate gray vistas. Yet, amidst this struggle, a glimmer of hope shines through; in just a week, I'll have the opportunity to take two precious days off to immerse myself in painting. I aspire to channel these tumultuous inner visions into my artwork, creating something that resonates with meaning and beauty.
What? Me be ill?...
..Just a tad....

Quest incoming
This weekend, Uber is hosting an intriguing and demanding quest I've tentatively signed up for, though I'm still on the fence about fully committing. It's a two-tiered challenge: a $140/$280 quest that requires completing 50 runs, along with an additional 20 runs to really push the envelope. The catch is that these quests often fall short in offering enough runs to be truly worthwhile. From my previous experiences with larger quests, I've found myself frequently dispatched on lengthy routes for disappointingly brief deliveries, which can be quite exasperating. I'm curious to see how everything plays out this weekend and whether I'll find the commitment worthwhile.
As for today, the atmosphere felt a bit heavy, with most conversations revolving around the looming government shutdown and the local Memphis task force; topics that I'm intentionally steering clear of for the time being. The air was thick with tension, making it clear that many people were grappling with the uncertainty of these issues.
Well, that is boring...
Lately, my personal life has taken on a rather monotonous tone. Each morning before heading off to work, I often find myself in a daze, simply sitting and staring into space, grappling with the weight of preparing for the day while battling a sense of unease. The fatigue lingers throughout the day, and when I finally return home, I fall back into this same pattern, sitting and staring, the exhaustion wrapping around me like a heavy blanket, making it difficult to muster the energy for anything else.
Yet, amid this routine, there's a flicker of excitement on the horizon: the upcoming weekend is almost here. I've poured my heart and soul into my work, and I truly feel I've earned this time for myself. As I start to compile a lengthy to-do list of activities I hope to accomplish during my time off, I'm determined to carve out moments for genuine relaxation as well. There are a few tasks around the house that demand my attention, but I'll also make it a priority to unwind and recharge. This weekend is a well-deserved respite, and I can't wait to embrace it fully.
Spooky...
..Nope, not spooky....

I forgot my hat
Today marks the vibrant celebration of Halloween, a day when creativity and whimsy collide. Unfortunately, my costume plans fell short, as the only attire I had in mind was that of an Uber driver, complete with a quirky hat that I ended up forgetting in the rush of the day. As the evening unfolded, I did have the opportunity to give a couple of spirited revelers rides; they were decked out in elaborate costumes, their laughter echoing in the crisp night air. However, apart from a run-in with a lively group of tipsy sorority girls, the night felt surprisingly muted. They were cheerful and playful, their costumes a riot of color and glitter, but I found myself reluctant to engage deeply in their merriment. As the hours slipped away, a twinge of disappointment lingered; it seems Halloween might just pass me by this year, leaving me with little more than fleeting moments of festivity and a sense of unfulfilled celebration.
Tired, so tired...
I'm genuinely excited for this weekend to arrive. Battling this persistent chest cold has been quite a trial, sapping my energy and leaving me feeling drained. Right now, all I can do is focus on resting and staying hydrated, although I know that may be easier said than done. Tomorrow marks the beginning of my weekend adventure, and I can't wait to see what surprises it has in store for me.
On Monday, I'll be celebrating my personal new year, a day dedicated to reflection and planning as I set the stage for what's ahead. I have an extensive list of items for 2025 that I didn't manage to check off last year. Upon reflection, I realize that, despite having the time, I often found myself lacking the energy and solid groundwork to tackle those goals. But I'm determined to change that in the upcoming year, forging a path filled with purpose and accomplishment.
