Welcome to The Journey

An open book journey of Christopher William Klein

There is only one image this month. I have been concentrating on other projects. This uses Daz3D and Photoshop along with several filters.

Greetings: We have finally stepped into December, and it feels as though November slipped through my fingers in the blink of an eye. While the month didn't bring any groundbreaking advancements, I find comfort in the fact that I managed to maintain my progress without taking any steps backward. As the year draws to a close, I can't help but feel a sense of anticipation for the possibilities and opportunities that the upcoming year might hold.

Cold and rain...

..What a pain....

December 01, 2025

The push is on

December has arrived, bringing with it a ferocious storm rolling like from the churning sea. The temperature has plummeted to a bone-chilling cold, and I found myself drenched in relentless rain from dawn until dusk. Each time it seemed the ominous clouds might part and give way to a hint of brightness, they only redoubled their efforts, unleashing sheets of water that drench the world in a relentless downpour.

To my surprise, despite the biting cold and the storm's fury, my patrons remained in remarkably good spirits. Their laughter and chatter provided a warm contrast to the dreary weather outside, and I was able to push through the challenges of the day and exceed my goals. Now, as I reach the fourth day of a grueling 10-day tour, I can feel the effects of the journey beginning to settle in. It's time to summon my strength, dig deep, and push through the fatigue that lingers.

Routine! Gotta love it...

I'm gradually settling into my new routine, and surprisingly, it feels like I'm finding my footing. I managed to push through the morning chaos and check off everything on my to-do list before heading off to work. But once I stepped into the world outside, the real challenges began.

The day greeted me with a mix of bitter cold and relentless rain, soaking through my sweatshirt before I even reached the car and making every step feel like a chore. On top of that, I had been putting off getting my oil changed for far too long, and it was time to finally check that off my list.

What should have been a quick 15-minute visit stretched into an hour of mounting frustration. The technicians seemed overwhelmed, darting between vehicles, while a shiny Mustang had mysteriously jumped the queue. I watched as they lavished their attention on that car, leaving everyone else, including me, feeling like an afterthought.

When I finally slid into the oil bay, the experience only soured further. They rushed through the service, neglecting all the standard checks I had come to expect from such visits. My lights? Ignored. My battery? Completely overlooked. I felt invisible, just another car in a line waiting to be forgotten. They completed the oil change, thank goodness for that, but it was clear I was merely a number to them.

I spent the remainder of the day contemplating whether it would be worth my time to file a complaint against the company. Yet, since this was my first negative experience at this particular location, I decided to chalk it up to an off day. Perhaps next time will be better. As the hours dragged on and I prepared to head home, a sudden realization struck me: I had completely forgotten to eat lunch. This lapse was becoming all too common, a side effect of my new medication that I desperately need to keep an eye on. Despite the ups and downs, I'm choosing to reflect on today as a good day, even if I'm still uncertain if it truly earns that positive label.

Now it is just cold...

..What is to come?....

December 02, 2025

Snow on the way?

Today marked a slight improvement over yesterday, but that's not saying much in this frigid weather. The air remains biting, with sharp gusts that cut through layers of clothing, although, at last, the relentless drizzle has ceased. A heavy cloud cover looms overhead, pregnant with the potential for snow, though I can't say if it will truly materialize, at least not today. Just the faint whisper of impending snow or sleet sent many drivers scurrying to stay indoors, leaving the streets more open than usual for those of us who braved the chill to drive around the city picking up passengers. This sudden surge in competition made it challenging to achieve my income goal for the day. By the time evening fell, I was thoroughly worn out, every muscle in my body aching from the constant hustle.

Pushing to the end of the month...

The morning unfolded smoothly, allowing me to methodically check off each item on my daily checklist with a satisfying sense of accomplishment. Work was, well, just that, a series of tasks and projects needing attention. At lunch, I made a brief stop at Love's on Lamar Ave. to pick up a sub for dinner. The visit left something to be desired; the staff seemed stretched thin, and the ambiance felt somewhat neglected. Despite this, I tried to keep my spirits high, engaging in light-hearted banter with the staff as we shared a few laughs under the fluorescent lights.

However, upon returning home, my mood took a nosedive. I suspect it was the result of a day spent forcing a positive outlook that didn't quite align with my true feelings. Though I had big plans to dive into various projects, I opted for stillness instead, wrapping myself in quietude and allowing my thoughts to swirl.

When I finally crawled into bed, I discovered my heating blanket was malfunctioning, leaving the chilly air to seep into the room. The cold crept around me, making for a night of tossing and turning, and I knew I would feel the repercussions of this restless sleep in the morning. Everyone is allowed one off day each week, and I suppose today would be mine.

Before calling it a night, I did manage a small triumph: I downloaded and printed a copy of the beloved copycat Subway roll recipes that had long piqued my interest. Additionally, I took a moment to locate my silicone mold, a signal that it's time to embark on my bread-making adventure. Finding time for that might pose a challenge, but it's undoubtedly on my radar.

The word for today...

..Disappointment....

December 03, 2025

Overkill

Today was especially frustrating, serving as a stark reminder of the numerous challenges we face in our line of work. It feels like we're in the midst of a hiring blitz, and as a result, rides have become scarce while competition for them is fiercer than ever. What should have been a typically busy day has transformed into a daunting struggle for each and every fare.

I found myself at the airport, surrounded by over a dozen other drivers, all of us anxiously scanning the horizon for the telltale signs that would send us racing into the city. The atmosphere was charged with anticipation, yet ultimately fruitless. Many of us were scattered across various neighborhoods, each hoping for a ride to appear as if by magic, yet the reality was that the market felt completely oversaturated. It was as if we were maneuvering through a maze of fellow drivers rather than navigating an urban landscape filled with eager passengers.

Despite my best efforts to persevere through the relentless demand and the tension that hung in the air, the weariness began to take its toll. Hour after hour passed, each one marked by fruitless waiting and fierce competition for dwindling rides. After several hours of this exhausting cycle, I finally made the tough decision to call it a day about two hours earlier than usual. As I drove home, disappointment settled in; however, I held onto a glimmer of hope that the trials of today might discourage the less committed drivers. Perhaps this would create an opening for dedicated drivers like me to reclaim a sense of normalcy and find success in the days to come.

Another type of blitz....

For every shadow that looms, a light always shines through. Today, my light comes from my writing. This morning, just before stepping out into the bustling world of work, I took a moment to immerse myself in my novel. As I opened the file, the familiar rush of inspiration enveloped me, and I poured my thoughts with fervor onto the page. The result was an entire chapter, a product of my imagination and dedication, now standing ready for print. That surge of accomplishment washed over me, filling me with warmth and a renewed sense of motivation as I reflected on how far I've come in this creative journey. Although the road ahead is still long and winding, with countless revisions and edits yet to tackle, I feel that each keystroke propels me closer to my ultimate goal of finishing this story.

Meanwhile, I continue to navigate the lingering side effects of my medication. Most notably, I've been grappling with a persistent upset stomach, its nagging discomfort has become a daily companion and an annoyance that I'm slowly learning to manage. I've started to pay closer attention to what I eat and how it affects me, adopting a more mindful approach to my meals. However, I recognize that if this discomfort persists, it may be time to consult my doctor and consider adjustments that could better support my well-being. Balancing my health with my creative pursuits is crucial, and I'm determined to find a way to flourish in both areas.

The clockwork...

..is broken....

December 04, 2025

Pushing through

The bitter cold hangs heavily in the air, its icy grasp teasing the threshold of freezing, just a slight degree above it, yet sufficient for the chill to seep deep into my bones. Today, the atmosphere felt unusually charged, an oppressive weight settling over the city, amplified by an overwhelming police presence. I spotted more than 100 police cars, meticulously clustered in groups of four, their flashing lights painting a surreal tableau against the dreary gray skies. The hues of blue and red danced vividly, contrasting sharply with the muted backdrop of imposing winter.

The incessant rain, mingling with soft flurries of snow, turned the roads into a slick, treacherous expanse. Puddles formed, reflecting the somber clouds above, while several accidents dotted the streets, their momentary chaos quick but impactful. The Memphis police, however, were swift and efficient, managing the aftermath with practiced ease, directing traffic and ensuring everyone remained safe amidst the turmoil. It was evident that the Memphis task force had their sights set on specific individuals, their surveillance meticulous, but thankfully, I felt shielded beneath their radar.

As I maneuvered through the streets, I couldn't shake off the palpable tension among the drivers around me. Their anxiety radiated in the way they gripped their steering wheels, knuckles white and jaws clenched. The adverse weather forced me to consciously reduce my speed, keenly aware of the latent aggression simmering in those who trailed closely behind. With their headlights blaring like impatient beacons, they blinded me with their high beams, an unspoken pressure pushing me to adapt instinctively by slowing down even more. The glare from behind was nearly blinding, distorting my view of the road ahead. Inevitably, they would dart past, leaving a wake of frustration that seemed to cling to the air as they zoomed by, oblivious to the virtue of patience they sorely lacked.

A stark reminder of the risks that lay just beneath the surface came when I witnessed one of those overly eager drivers misjudge a curve near Millington, crashing violently into the guardrail. The sound was jarring, a brutal reminder of how one reckless decision could lead to dire consequences. If only they had approached with the caution that the weather demanded, perhaps the outcome would have been far less grim.

As for me, I'm managing fairly well this week; however, I find myself grappling with a frustrating lack of productivity, the clock ticking slowly as if taunting me. The weight of time feels heavy, each moment stretching out longer than the last. Yet, tomorrow holds the promise of the weekend, Friday, and I cling to the hope that the horizon will brighten, bringing with it a sense of stability and peace.

Feeling off....

Since there seems to be a perpetual shortage of irritation in my life, I've decided to add the nagging discomfort of stomach issues to the mix. It's not an outright feeling of illness, but rather an unsettling sensation that illness lurks just beyond my awareness, ready to pounce and disrupt my day at the most inconvenient moment. This persistent discomfort clung to me all day long, making even the simplest tasks feel like monumental challenges.

Before I headed into work, I threw myself into editing my novels, losing myself in the intricate web of words and characters I had created. With each revision, I could feel the stories coming alive, and I made significant strides toward refining both narratives. If I can maintain this momentum, I should have both manuscripts polished and ready to embrace the world by the New Year. Once that achievement is behind me, I'll be free to embark on the next adventure in my writing journey, exploring new ideas and themes that have been dancing in my mind.

By the time I ended work for the day, I felt utterly drained, my energy sapped by the day's demands. I longed to collapse into my chair, to let the weight of the world slide off my shoulders and disappear into the comforting abyss of nothingness. And that's exactly how I spent my evening, lost in thought, letting the noise of the world fade away while I pondered the stories lingering in the corners of my mind.

This is the end...

..of the week, that is....

December 05, 2025

Pushing through

I find myself at a crossroads with my work lately, a point where I must confront the monotony that has seeped into my daily routine. Each day feels like a mechanical exercise, where I go through the motions without any real engagement or excitement. While I am fairly confident that I'm meeting my weekly requirements, the lack of follow-ups or check-ins leaves me uncertain about my actual performance and value to the cause.

Just earlier this week, I noticed Uber undergoing a sudden hiring blitz, flooding the streets with a wave of new drivers eager to earn their place. This initial influx often leads to a high drop-out rate, as many drivers struggle to cope with the demands and pressures of the gig economy. As a result, this is the landscape we're currently navigating, a mix of experienced drivers and newcomers seeking their footing.

The remaining drivers have congregated in downtown areas like the iconic pyramid and the vibrant Beale Street, creating an unintended oversaturation in what was once a prime location for lucrative fares. The clustering of so many drivers has diluted the earning potential in these hotspots, making it increasingly difficult to secure well-paying rides. What used to be a strategic choice for bonus opportunities has now turned into a near-unbearable competition for fares.

Personally, I've made it a point to steer clear of these bustling hotspots whenever possible. I've learned that my best chances for higher fares come when I distance myself from the crowd. When I do find myself in those thickly populated areas, I make a quick exit, as I know that securing a fare becomes daunting amidst so many competitors. While many drivers flock to the busy streets, I prefer to linger on the periphery, where fewer drivers naturally drive up fare prices thanks to the scarcity of options.

I'm relying on my instincts more than ever to navigate this tricky terrain. It may sound odd, especially without the benefit of visual cues, but I find myself gesturing passionately as I describe my thought process. My instincts feel as important as any calculated strategy, an old joke I carry with me, though it doesn't always elicit laughter. Still, with just two days to endure before I can finally take a much-needed break, I remind myself to hold on, remain focused, and see how this all unfolds in the end.

Into habit....

It usually doesn't take long for a routine to blossom into a habit, and I think I've finally reached that transformative point in my life. Each morning, I find myself waking up at the same hour, the sun just beginning to crest the horizon, casting gentle light into my room, even with the blackout curtains. Whether I feel the energy or not, there's an undeniable force propelling me into action. I approach my primary daily goals with a renewed sense of purpose, diving into tasks that once felt overwhelming. After accomplishing those, I seamlessly transition to my secondary and tertiary objectives, each one a stepping stone on my path to productivity.

I've even woven the simple act of preparing my lunch into my daily goals. It's easy for such a basic task to slip through the cracks, especially lately as my appetite has been somewhat elusive, almost unpredictable. By making it a deliberate part of my routine, I ensure that I take my nourishment seriously rather than risking an unhealthy snacking spree later in the day. It's incredible how organizing these small aspects of my life contributes to the larger picture; I'm checking off tasks each day, consistently sticking to my carefully crafted schedule, and feeling a profound sense of accomplishment as a result.

As we march toward the end of the year, I can hardly believe how the past five weeks have zipped by in a whirlwind, blurring together into a mosaic of moments. At the start of November, I declared my intent to treat that time as a fresh beginning, a chance to reset and rejuvenate. Yet, here we are, nearly five weeks later, and I'm struck by the realization that despite my sense of time slipping away too swiftly, I've been making remarkable strides in both of my novels. I'm also weaving together several short stories, each one a unique exploration of character and narrative, while diligently pursuing the educational endeavors I've set for myself, expanding my horizons and knowledge.

Perhaps that's what makes time seem to elapse so rapidly, this flurry of creativity and learning. Or maybe, sometimes, it feels as though a comic book villain has swiftly managed to accelerate our world, distorting time for some diabolical purpose. Or could it be that we've all indulged in some hallucinogenic adventure, unwittingly losing track of reality? After all, certain substances have a peculiar way of warping our perception of time, stretching some moments while compressing others. Wouldn't that be quite the twist in our otherwise ordinary lives? The thought alone adds an intriguing layer of irony to our daily march toward the end of the year.

Pushing the day...

..while it pushes back....

December 06, 2025

1 of 2 is dead

I've been navigating through this week with determination, doing my best to maintain a bright and positive attitude despite the numerous challenges that have come my way. However, today took an unexpected twist when I had to make a trip to the airport to pick up a young lady who was set to travel to Jonesboro, Arkansas. The round trip consumed three precious hours of my work shift, an invested chunk of time I had meticulously carved out for completing the second of my two quests.

As I grapple with the first quest, I had carefully mapped out my day to stay on track, knowing that each moment was critical for my progress. Logically speaking, I should be able to wrap up the first quest by tomorrow, but with this unanticipated trip to the airport, there's no feasible way for me to tackle the second one now.

I had weighed the potential for this delay beforehand, but I found it hard to turn down the opportunity to extend a helping hand for the drive to Jonesboro. It felt rewarding to assist someone in need, even if it meant sacrificing my own productivity.

In the end, I managed to bring my day to a close right where I needed to be, and I consider that a silver lining amidst the chaos. Tomorrow marks the final stretch of a demanding ten-day work streak. I'm counting down the hours until I can finally enjoy two well-deserved days off, and I'm genuinely looking forward to that much-needed break!

No, not a mood....

The weather today feels like a refreshing breath of fresh air, a welcome change from the dreary conditions we've endured over the past few days. While the temperature remains quite stable, there's a gentle softness in the atmosphere that makes it feel far less biting than before. Early this morning, before I headed into work, I immersed myself in my writing, making significant strides on my novels. It felt invigorating to put pen to paper so to speak, and I also took the time to update my journals, capturing my thoughts and experiences.

Although I didn't get around to diving into updating ancient a project I'm deeply passionate about, I've earmarked some dedicated time for that tomorrow or perhaps on Monday. I'm hopeful that engaging with this fascinating content will help me regain my momentum.

I find myself slightly behind in both my reading list and my drawing course, but with tomorrow's agenda looking considerably clearer, I'm optimistic about catching up on those pursuits. Additionally, I must confront the clutter in the garage, a task I've been procrastinating. I had planned to get my photos taken, but I've decided that can wait for now. My primary focus is securing a new Kia for Laura, ensuring that I'm aligned with my current goals and making progress in areas that matter most to me.

Reflecting on my experiences in 2025, I felt unprepared and ultimately accomplished little of what I set out to do. Now, as I step into the new year of 2026, I'm resolutely determined to turn things around. Although it feels like I'm navigating a course full of monumental challenges, I embrace this journey with optimism. Okay, perhaps that sounds a bit dramatic, since I certainly don't have to contend with the fires of hell, but you understand the essence of my determination.

The end has come...

..thank the gods....

December 07, 2025

The calm...

Over the past year and a half, I've observed an interesting pattern as my time off approaches: my days tend to spiral in one of two directions. Either I confront a series of grueling challenges leading up to my break, or I glide through the hours with surprising ease. This time, fortunately, I experienced the latter.

As the day unfolded, I felt a steady rhythm; I pushed through tasks with renewed energy, hitting my daily goals and even wrapping up my work about an hour earlier than usual. It was almost surreal, no irate riders to contend with, and the atmosphere was remarkably calm. The only splash of drama came from a tipsy young woman who, in her confusion, mistakenly identified me as her boyfriend when I dropped her off.

It was hard not to chuckle as I witnessed a rather comical moment when she stumbled and face-planted, her backside in the air, accidentally revealing more than she had intended. I couldn't help but let out a quiet laugh, relieved to see that help was already on its way, courtesy of a small squad of her equally inebriated friends who rushed to her side. They waved, wiggled, and thanked me with a combination of giggles and grateful gestures before I made my exit.

Aside from that amusing hiccup, the day unfolded smoothly, and that predictability was a welcome reprieve. I embraced the calmness, content with the uneventful nature of it all.

Disappointed? Nah!....

As my current tour at Uber nears its conclusion, I feel a slight pang of disappointment settling in. Over the next two days, my agenda is packed with tasks that demand my immediate attention, yet the thought of leaving behind this familiar routine fills me with a bittersweet sense of longing. I can't shake the feeling that part of this sentiment is influenced by my current medication, which has a tendency to play tricks on my emotions, amplifying moments of nostalgia and reflection; still, the absurdity of it all lingers in my mind, making it hard to concentrate on what lies ahead.

This morning, before heading into the drive, I decided to carve out some time to tackle a few more chapters of the novels that have recently captured my imagination. To my delight, I made considerable progress, losing myself in the plots and characters as I sipped my morning coffee. However, when I finally returned home later in the evening, I was struck by an unusual lack of hunger, yet another unwelcome side effect of my treatment. Even though my appetite had deserted me, I knew I needed to nourish my body, so I mustered the willpower to whip up a simple yet wholesome meal. As I sat down to eat, I savored the flavors, reminding myself of the importance of self-care during this transition.

Flipping through my schedule for the upcoming week, I couldn't help but feel overwhelmed by the sheer volume of appointments and tasks awaiting me. A wellness visit with my doctor loomed large on the calendar, offering a chance to address my health concerns, while a test drive of the sleek new Kia that had caught our eyes promised a moment of excitement amid the chaos. Additionally, I had set aside time to drop off holiday gifts for those in need, a commitment that brought me joy but added to the bustling itinerary. It was shaping up to be a whirlwind of a week, filled with both obligations and opportunities.

In the midst of it all, I also need to carve out time to establish my Uber schedule for the weeks ahead. The thought of planning my work hours feels daunting, considering the other commitments vying for my attention. Nonetheless, I know it's essential to tackle that challenge tomorrow when I can approach it with a clearer mind. For now, I'm navigating through these final days with a mix of anticipation and nostalgia, cherishing the moments that have defined my experience while preparing to embrace what comes next.

To rest...

..and beyond....

December 08, 2025

No time to be lazy...

My 10-day adventure with Uber has officially come to a close, and today marked an important milestone as I took the time to balance the finances from the past week. I'm happy to report that the process went exceptionally smoothly. I meticulously organized all the figures, and to my delight, they lined up perfectly, revealing a much clearer picture of both my earnings and expenses.

However, there's still work to be done. I need to chart out my plans for not only the upcoming week but also the next 10 to 15 days. For now, though, I've decided to give myself a well-deserved breather. After hours of focused effort on balancing the books, I felt a profound sense of accomplishment as I finalized everything. This moment of closure allows me to take a two-day respite to recharge and reflect on the experience. I'm looking forward to using this time to gather my thoughts and prepare for what lies ahead.

Success....

As the Christmas season approaches, I find myself navigating through some minor personal challenges that often lead to fluctuating moods. It's a common struggle during this hectic time; many people feel the weight of holiday obligations and expectations. Unlike some, I've never fully adjusted to the emotional rollercoaster that often accompanies this festive period. However, today marked a small victory that truly lifted my spirits.

Over the past ten days, I dedicated myself to diligently checking off items from my long-standing To-Do List, and I'm thrilled to report that I'm nearly caught up. This productive momentum inspired me to embark on a culinary adventure that I've longed to tackle: recreating the iconic rolls from Subway.

In past attempts to bake this beloved bread, I was met with consistent disappointments. Each loaf emerged thick and heavy, completely missing the light, airy texture that defines a truly perfect roll. A few weeks ago, my wife Laura surprised me with cheerful silicone molds as a thoughtful gift, which I hoped would enhance my baking experience. While these molds would help shape the rolls, they couldn't fix the fundamental recipe issues that had previously plagued my efforts.

Today, however, I felt a surge of determination and opted to try out a new recipe. To my sheer delight, the rolls turned out beautifully; soft, fluffy, and even better than the originals from Subway! They glistened enticingly, showcasing a perfect golden-brown crust that hinted at the pillowy interior waiting to be savored. For dinner tonight, I made a delicious tuna sandwich using one of these freshly baked rolls, and it exceeded my expectations. Each bite was a delightful reminder of the satisfaction I had been missing; finally, I had cracked the code to replicating this cherished bread.

Looking ahead, I plan to stop by Walmart tomorrow to stock up on some quality lunch meat that will serve as a staple for my meals throughout the week. The bread-making process takes about an hour and a half, but I'm confident it will stay fresh in the refrigerator for a few days, making it easy to whip up sandwiches whenever I want. I'm embracing this achievement as a significant win; it's truly the highlight of my day!

Easy peasy...

..let's rest easy....

December 09, 2025

Planning and thinking...

As I navigate the complexities of life, I find myself gradually gaining wisdom with age. Gone are the impulsive days of leaping onto every trendy bandwagon that passes by, as those choices have often led me down disappointing paths. This reflection brings me to my current challenge: piecing together my schedule for the next two weeks with Uber. It's shaping up to be quite a juggling act. My upcoming days off fall on the 22nd and 23rd of December, right in the heart of the Christmas week. While I'd prefer to take Christmas Day off to spend with loved ones, I'm not entirely against working that day, especially since there's a lucrative opportunity during Christmas Eve and Christmas Day rides. However, I need to consult with my family before making a final decision, it's all still floating in uncertainty.

On a brighter note, I achieved something quite delightful today: I created my very own hot sauce, and I must say, it turned out spectacularly! I recently uncovered my mom's cherished old hot sauce recipe book, which is a treasure trove of recipes not just for fiery sauces, but also for enticing dipping sauces that would now be classified as wing sauces, along with hearty pasta sauces. As I thumbed through the pages, nostalgia washed over me, and I felt inspired to try my hand at creating something unique. On a whim, I also delved into the FDA regulations surrounding the processing of homemade food items. To my surprise, I discovered that I would fall under cottage law, which opens up exciting possibilities for me. This newfound venture could become an intriguing side project, offering a welcome distraction from my daily routine. More details regarding the adventure of the day can be found in the personal section below.

A creative day....

I had to muster the strength to push myself into action today because, upon waking, all I craved was to sink into stillness and do absolutely nothing. Giving in to that temptation would have been impractical and likely left me feeling despondent. However, I rallied my motivation and rose to the occasion. As I inspected the mood lights I had envisioned in the front yard, I was disappointed to discover they lacked a red and green setting. Reluctantly, I decided to scrap that idea for this year. Nevertheless, I'll keep the lights on hand for when I finally tackle the yard makeover, dreaming of the day they will twinkle elegantly in the evening glow. For now, though, I'm calling my Christmas decorating complete.

I then took a trip to Walmart, a bustling arena of shopping carts and holiday shoppers, where I gathered all the ingredients I needed to prepare sandwiches for the week ahead. These sandwiches will feature the delightful subway copycat rolls I baked just two days ago. With three rolls remaining, I generously offered the other two to the ladies, knowing we all share a common love for the same type of sandwiches, and luckily, the lunch meat was readily available. Once these three rolls have vanished, I plan to whip up another batch, keeping our sandwiches fresh and exciting.

As I dove into my work today, I found myself on a flavorful adventure with hot sauce. I contemplated the practicality of crafting dozens of unique hot sauces to stock at home, but a lingering doubt crept in, wouldn't they likely go to waste? However, the thought that perhaps the public might have an appetite for them sparked my curiosity. It's a notion worth exploring.

With my culinary experiments wrapped up for the week, I felt the shift in energy, beckoning me towards something more creative. I dedicated substantial time to one of my novels, immersing myself in storytelling, but my primary challenge loomed large: I realized I wasn't truly connecting with the narrative. As I edited chapter 6, clarity hit me like a thunderbolt: even I, the author, felt distanced from the story. I revisited chapter 1, only to uncover the root of my disconnection, it read like a dry news report, drowning in facts devoid of imagery, leaving me feeling defeated.

But then, like an ancient paladin gearing up to confront overwhelming foes, I grasped my metaphorical weapon, my keyboard, and plunged into action. I cast aside my editing agenda and returned to the preface, pouring my passion and enthusiasm into the words. Upon rereading it, I could feel the narrative resonate within me. Fueled by renewed vigor, I sailed through the entire preface, refining it as I went, then pressed on to chapters 1 and 2. Now, they feel polished and ready for a publisher's eyes. I infused my insights, my humor, and, importantly, a touch of my characteristic dark humor.

This journey also shed light on the difficulties I encountered with chapter 5 during my previous editing sessions. If I, as the writer, can't relish the story, how can I expect my readers to be captivated by it? I'm optimistic this phase will pass swiftly, but only time will tell.

To wrap up my day, I indulged in more creative endeavors. I caught up on my two technical courses, immersing myself in new knowledge, and then launched into my drawing course. Today's challenge: drawing an intricately detailed eyeball. I'm eager to see my skills develop over the coming week. I couldn't let my musical pursuits go unattended either, so I dedicated about an hour to finger exercises on the guitar. Feeling adventurous, I jumped ahead in my practice, exploring two chords and even teasing out a portion of a song. It's a pity I can't carry a tune, or I'd be belting out "A Horse with No Name" with glee.

Back at it...

..Oye....

December 10, 2025

Not the greatest start...

After two days off, my return to the grind wasn't as triumphant as I had envisioned. There was an underlying tension in the air that I couldn't quite put my finger on, and the rides today felt more challenging than usual. I was fortunate to receive some high-paying fares, but the gap between each ride stretched painfully, with waits ranging from 10 to 30 minutes. I managed to inch close to my daily earnings goal, but as the night wore on, I found myself picking up two consecutive rides from the same spot, an infamous "cougar bar." It was a lively establishment where older women flocked on "cougar night" to mingle with younger men, and the energy inside is palpable, by all description.

When I arrived, I picked up two ladies who hadn't found much luck in their quest for connection that evening. They were vibrant and full of life, though their humorous attempts at flirtation often veered into the realm of the inappropriate, leaving me feeling both amused and somewhat exasperated. After navigating their playful banter, I decided that it was time to call it a night. Tomorrow, I hope, will bring a smoother ride and better fortunes.

Pushing through....

As the week ahead loomed with its inevitable chaos and commitments, I resolved to embrace today as a sanctuary of calmness and creativity, a necessary retreat from the bustling rhythm of everyday life. I began my morning with a nearly 90-minute meditation session, settling into a comfortable position in my personal space. The gentle hum of nature outside mingled with the soft chimes of a nearby wind bell, playing on the computer, creating an atmosphere conducive to mindfulness. With each deep inhalation, I focused on the peaceful rhythm of my breath, allowing it to wash over me like warm sunlight, clearing my mind of the usual clutter and preparing me for the challenges to come.

Once I felt a sense of centeredness envelop me, I transitioned to my exercise routine, invigorating my body and awakening my senses. Each movement was deliberate and expressive, and I could feel my muscles stretching and strengthening with gratitude. Fueled by this newfound energy, I dove into my writing, pouring my thoughts onto the page as I crafted another half chapter of my novel. The words flowed effortlessly like a winding river, each sentence a reflection of my creativity and passion, imbuing the characters with life and depth. In addition to my writing, I tackled another item from my long-standing back blog, crossing it off my list with a satisfying sense of accomplishment, a small but significant win, before heading off to work, feeling as if I had already conquered a challenging day.

When I finally returned home after a long day spent navigating the city, the weight of frustration settled heavily on my shoulders, a physical reminder of the day's trials. Rather than letting it consume me, I reached for my guitar, a trusted companion through life's ups and downs. I poured my feelings into practicing my fingerwork, letting the music become a soothing balm to my weary spirit. The familiar chords resonated beautifully in the air, intertwining with the captivating adventures of *Star Trek* playing softly on the screen. With each strum, I found solace in the comforting melodies, allowing the music to seep into my soul and transport me to distant worlds. This blend of sound and storytelling ignited my imagination, providing a perfect way to unwind and rejuvenate, a gentle reminder of the beauty in both music and creativity.

Improvement?...

..Perhaps....

December 11, 2025

Into the swing...

The week started on a challenging note, and while things haven't fully turned around, there are faint glimmers of hope suggesting improvement. My runs were still lengthy, dotted with breaks to catch my breath, but thankfully, these pauses were shorter than yesterday's elongated intermissions. I was relieved not to encounter any overly affectionate characters seeking attention, which can sometimes throw off my rhythm. To combat the persistent gloom of the world outside, I filled the air with cheerful Christmas melodies, hoping to sprinkle a bit of joy and warmth into the lives of those around me. I'm uncertain if my musical efforts resonated with others, but they certainly lifted my spirits. As the day came to a close, I had dedicated around 10 hours to work, feeling a mix of exhaustion and accomplishment as I wrapped up my tasks.

Okay, I got this....

The morning before my annual physical appointment felt a bit rushed, filled with the familiar mix of anticipation and a touch of anxiety that always accompanies this ritual. As I navigated through my morning routine, grabbing a quick breakfast of sausage and freshly brewed coffee, I felt the weight of what lay ahead. When I finally settled into the sterile exam room, the bright fluorescent lights flickering overhead only added to my unease. However, a wave of relief washed over me as the doctor reviewed my chart and confirmed that my health was generally good, with no major concerns.

Yet, as the conversation shifted, I found myself needing to gently redirect him; he began to veer into topics that felt outside his realm of expertise. While I truly appreciated his care and concern, I couldn't help but feel that some discussions, especially those regarding mental and emotional health, are better left for a psychiatrist or psychologist. I didn't want to dismiss his efforts, but I sought a more focused dialogue about my physical health, after all.

With the appointment concluded, I had timed my visit impeccably. As soon as I stepped out of the clinic, the bustling energy of Memphis beckoned me, weaving me into the rhythm of my daily responsibilities. The city felt vibrantly alive, buzzing under an unseasonably warm sun that caressed my skin. The air hinted at a change in the weather, with foreboding clouds predicted to sweep in this weekend, but for now, the warmth invigorated me.

Arriving home later, I rolled up my sleeves and dove into a few lingering projects that had started to pile up, organizing my workspace, tackling the laundry list of tasks, and finally sorting through the stack of unopened magazines. Each task I checked off my to-do list brought a deep sense of satisfaction, a small reward for my efforts. While I knew a couple of chores still awaited my attention before the weekend came to an end, I allowed myself to pause for a moment, inhale the crisp air, and breathe a sigh of contentment, letting go of the rush for now and embracing the small victories of the day.

Not as planned...

..another day....

December 12, 2025

Going well, until...

I hit the ground running, filled with determination to make it a great day. Everything was going smoothly until the middle of my shift, when a request popped up for a ride to Little Rock, Arkansas. The entire journey stretched across five hours, granting me 15 rides for the day toward the daunting target of 50 required for the current quest. Yet, as the time ticked on, I couldn't shake the feeling that reaching that goal was becoming increasingly unlikely.

The rider I picked up turned out to be quite a handful, monopolizing the entire trip on an animated phone call that I found hard to ignore. To drown out the incessant drama spilling from her side of the conversation, I cranked up the volume on some cheerful Christmas music, but soon switched over to The Pretty Reckless, their powerful sound providing a welcome escape. I was acutely aware that my musical choice might invite a negative review, but in that moment, I simply wasn't in the mood to deal with anything else.

As if the ride wasn't challenging enough, we encountered a seemingly endless line of state troopers stationed strategically along the roadside, their presence a constant reminder to drive with utmost caution. I felt the tension rise in my chest, acutely aware of the need to navigate carefully, and by some stroke of luck, I managed to return without attracting any unwanted attention.

Reflecting on my day, I remembered a previous passenger I had picked up; a recovery specialist for a trucking company. He shared a particularly bizarre tale about having to recover a vehicle that had come to a screeching halt, all because the driver found himself flummoxed by reading a children's book. This driver, with an impressive 25 years of experience under his belt, boasted an impeccable record of zero accidents and zero tickets. The thought of that, combined with the absurdity of the situation, left me feeling a mix of disbelief and melancholy.

I blame the season....

As I consciously set aside the relentless demands of work, I find myself plunging into deep self-reflection, particularly concerning my current emotional state. I can't shake the feeling that this Christmas season, typically a radiant beacon of joy and warmth, is a significant source of my unease. What is usually a time filled with festive colors, cheerful gatherings, and the comforting sounds of seasonal music paradoxically casts a deep shadow over many, including myself. In conversations with friends and acquaintances, I sense a growing disquiet; they share their apprehensions about soaring food prices, unexpected shifts in insurance policies under the current administration, and the unending barrage of political theatrics emanating from Washington. Each day feels like an uphill struggle for mental clarity, as we wade through a flood of conflicting messages pulsating from our screens and the airwaves.

For those of us who tend to think critically, it becomes glaringly evident that a more intricate narrative is unfolding just beneath the surface. Even among the writers, artists, and dreamers; those who typically perceive the world through a lens of creativity and imagination, it feels almost overwhelming to comprehend the full scope of what is happening around us. The daily dramas we witness seem to be meticulously constructed to drain our spirit, leaving us feeling like weary soldiers in an endless battle. We're being gently nudged into a state of numbness, resembling drones laboring through the motions of existence, stripped of passion and vigor. Even the sturdiest rock, with the persistent caress of time and the elements, can be worn down; and I truly believe this is precisely what is occurring within us, slowly but surely, as we navigate these tumultuous waters. The season, rather than lifting our spirits, has become a reflection of the complexities and challenges that weigh heavily on our minds and hearts, reminding us that beneath the surface of celebration lies a profound struggle for meaning and resilience.

The ups and the downs...

..send in the clowns!....

December 13, 2025

Time to get bitter...

Today felt remarkably like a deja vu, reminiscent of those lengthy drives that culminate in disappointingly brief passengers. The most exasperating moment arose when I was unexpectedly rerouted away from the lively streets near the iconic pyramid in Center City. Instead of enjoying the vibrant atmosphere, I was dropped back in Bartlett for an all-too-short one-mile fare. While my passengers were friendly and engaging, the rides themselves lacked the depth of experience I had hoped for. This unexpected turn of events has added an unwelcome twist to my weekly plans, particularly as I navigate personal matters that have been weighing heavily on my mind. I'm doing my best to maintain a positive outlook and remain open to whatever challenges come next.

Reflecting on my lengthy trip to Little Rock yesterday, I am beginning to accept the reality that I might not achieve my goals for the week. Despite this, I'm committed to putting forth my best effort, and only time will reveal the final outcome. Currently, the most striking change is the temperature; it has plummeted drastically, with forecasts predicting it will dip into the upper teens overnight. This sudden chill caught me off guard, especially after enjoying such a warm afternoon. As I made my way home, I couldn't help but feel the biting cold creeping in, contrasting sharply with the earlier comfort.

With only one working day left before a much-anticipated two-day break, I find myself counting down the remaining hours. This upcoming respite is particularly special, as following it, I will only have one more day off for the rest of the year, which will be on Christmas Eve. The thought of that cherished day keeps me motivated as I navigate through the week's challenges.

Drumroll please....

The highlight of the day was undoubtedly the arrival of Laura's shiny new car, a moment we had all been eagerly awaiting. After weeks of anticipation, we finally received the exhilarating news that her beloved vehicle was ready for pick-up. With excitement bubbling over, we made our way to the dealership, the atmosphere buzzing with energy as we prepared to finalize the paperwork and embark on a thrilling test drive.

As we arrived, the ladies were immediately captivated by the car's sleek design, a stunning new Kia that gleamed under quickly darkening sky. Its smooth lines and modern features sparked undeniable enthusiasm among us, transforming the lengthy transaction process into a mere formality. After about two and a half hours of reviewing specifications and signing documents, we bid farewell to the old Spark, now parked in its spot, making way for the striking new addition parked proudly in the driveway. Though it was slightly larger than the Chevy, I could already sense that this new model would be a fantastic fit for Laura's lifestyle. While it did have a few dings and scratches, evidence of its journey before arriving at our hands, I was confident that a good polish would restore its luster and have it looking brand new in no time.

The day's festivities, however, came at a cost. Due to the car appointment, I had to cut short my usual activities before heading to work, and by the time I returned home, I felt utterly drained. Seeking a small consolation, I decided to stop by Arby's for a second lunch, hoping to relive some nostalgic cravings from my youth. Yet, to my surprise, I stumbled upon an intriguing revelation: my taste for fast food had dramatically diminished. The homemade pepperoni and salami sandwich I had whipped up that morning tasted infinitely more satisfying than the gyro I picked up. I recalled fondly how much I used to enjoy their food; I even worked as an assistant manager back in the days when their menu was strictly classic roast beef sandwiches and curly fries; long before the advent of all those modern specialty items that now adorn their offerings. I chuckled to myself, reminiscing about those simpler times, but I made a conscious effort not to dwell on it too long.

Now, with just one more workday to conquer before the much-anticipated two-day break, I could already feel the weight of anticipation lift, a blissful escape was just around the corner!

Welcome to...

..THE PUSH!....

December 14, 2025

Surrender? NEVER!...

When push came to shove, I threw a punch, and it landed squarely in the face. Once again, I found myself enduring the grueling reality of long rides for disappointingly short runs, a situation that was beginning to gnaw at my patience. About halfway through my shift, the temptation to throw in the towel and declare it a week was almost overwhelming. The thought of losing over $100 for the week was simply unacceptable, a burden I couldn't bear.

With determination coursing through my veins, I dug my heels in and pushed forward, eventually steering into a more promising area that seemed to shimmer with opportunity. Not only did I manage to meet my financial goal, but I also completed a quest that I had initially deemed beyond my reach. The payout wasn't extravagant, but at least I wasn't facing the daunting prospect of falling behind. Now, with two days off ahead of me, I have the chance to catch my breath and meticulously map out my strategy for the upcoming week and the rest of the month to come.

A sigh of relief....

Reflecting on this past week, I can't help but feel it hasn't been the most fulfilling. I ended up clocking nearly eight hours off work, which serves as a clear indication of how my schedule was derailed. The week unfolded with a series of events that seemed to build on each other, straying me further from my professional commitments. Between juggling a doctor's appointment that ran longer than anticipated, running various errands that piled up, and dedicating several hours to assist Laura in her purchase of her new car, my work hours took quite a significant hit.

In retrospect, I realize that with a little better planning, perhaps mapping out my schedule in advance or prioritizing my tasks more efficiently, I could have navigated the week more effectively. Yet, as frustrating as it is to acknowledge, what's done is done, and I'm learning to accept that some weeks simply unfold in unexpected ways.

Now that everything is in place, Laura's has finally arrived, a vibrant shade of blue that gleams beautifully under the sunlight, I can breathe a sigh of relief as my week winds down. This morning, filled with anticipation for a productive day, I was determined to leave the house early. I had hoped to reclaim some of the hours I'd missed earlier in the week. However, after clocking in extra hours at work and pouring myself into numerous tasks, I returned home utterly worn out.

To unwind and help me slip into a more relaxed mindset, I lost myself in a few episodes of an enthralling new miniseries from the BBC. Created by the brilliant minds behind Doctor Who, the show grabbed my attention with its intricate storytelling and captivating characters. It was the perfect escape, allowing me to settle into my evening routine and momentarily forget the chaos of the week.

Now, with the weekend beckoning, I'm eagerly anticipating the next two days off. I plan to take the opportunity to recharge and indulge in more binge-worthy shows, hoping to turn my focus to relaxation and enjoyment. It's the small pleasures that I look forward to the most, as they provide a much-needed balance to the hustle and bustle of everyday life.

Day one...

..and counting....

December 15, 2025

Love those easy days....

Today was one of those days where I only needed to take care of paperwork. I was able to review and verify the data in about 15 minutes, and then my workday was done. Tomorrow should be even easier, as I will just need to plan for the rest of the week.

Too cold, but still productive....

It was a bone-chilling day, and I struggled to stay warm. Last night, I used two heating blankets, one on top and one on the bottom, just to get some sleep. I can feel the cold deep in my bones. However, I decided to make the most of my day off. I tackled my entire to-do list from last week and even checked off a few extra tasks before preparing my list for this week.

I received a call from the doctor asking for a consultation, which I will handle tomorrow. Additionally, I finished Chapter 3 of my novel. I know it's a bit of a setback, but I went back to reread my previous work, and I realized it was seriously lacking. Having just completed a creative writing course, I'm applying those new standards to my current writing, and I feel it's improving. Although this may set me back about a month, I am comfortable with that.

Tomorrow will be a cooking day once everyone is up and moving. I plan to make cucumber salad, bread, and pizza. We'll see how that goes!

Day two...

..and done....

December 16, 2025

A planning day....

As the year comes to an end, my focus today is on planning for the next 14 days. I have one more day off before the year concludes, and after that, my time will be devoted to handling various responsibilities. I'm hopeful that the new year will bring new insights and opportunities for growth. For now, though, I just want to get through the holiday season.

Doing my best....

Having two consecutive days off is a welcome relief, yet it still feels like a mere drop in the bucket when it comes to alleviating my mounting stress, especially with the holiday season's hustle and bustle fast approaching. This morning, as the sun peeked over the horizon, casting a warm golden hue across the house, I sprang into action. I joyfully wrapped vibrant Christmas presents adorned with colorful paper, carefully arranging them under the twinkling tree. The warm, soft glow of the lights added a layer of festive cheer, and I couldn't help but smile as I envisioned the joy these gifts would bring to my loved ones.

Once my family stirred and the house was filled with the comforting aroma of freshly brewed coffee mingled with the scent of a cold morning, I made my way to the doctor for a follow-up appointment. The check-up went smoothly, providing a sense of reassurance that was much needed. Afterward, I ventured to Walmart, weaving through the bustling aisles filled with eager shoppers. I gathered a plethora of supplies, mentally ticking off my list as I selected the perfect ingredients for my culinary endeavors planned for the day.

Back in the kitchen, I rolled up my sleeves and set to work crafting subway-style rolls. The dough rose beautifully, soft and elastic under my fingers as I prepared a special pizza sauce, blending it to perfection just for Willow. The air transformed into a cozy haven filled with tantalizing aromas as I shaped and baked two homemade pizzas, one topped with a medley of my favorite ingredients just for me, and the other a delightful creation tailored to Willow's tastes, featuring her requested toppings. As I pulled them from the oven, golden and bubbling, I couldn't help but revel in their perfection. After relying on frozen pizzas for far too long, indulging in this home-cooked goodness felt like a well-deserved reward for navigating another hectic week. Each savory bite confirmed that my homemade pizza was an unmatched delight, and I'm seriously contemplating making it a staple in my meal planning, now all I need is to ensure my pantry is stocked with fresh essentials.

Later, Willow and I joined forces to tackle the issue of the pool cover, which had been flapping in the wind. Our teamwork paid off as we managed to secure it back in place successfully. However, our trusty shop vac, long on its last legs, finally succumbed to the wear and tear during our efforts. Resourceful as ever, we quickly improvised with what we had on hand to complete the task without missing a beat.

Once the pool project was wrapped up, I allowed myself a well-deserved break. I settled down with my desktop and focused on my novel. The words flowed easily this afternoon, each sentence building on the last, and at this pace, I'm confident I'll not only meet my writing goals for 2025 but also catch up much sooner than expected. The day felt fulfilling, a perfect blend of productivity and creativity that nourished both my body and spirit, leaving me with a sense of accomplishment and contentment as the evening wrapped around me like a warm embrace.

Back at it...

..almost done with the year....

December 17, 2025

Nope, not going to do it....

It was a rough day that didn't start well. Before I even hit the road, my check engine light came on. I had to take a detour to AutoZone to have it checked. Thankfully, it turned out to be nothing more than an oxygen sensor. While it's not ideal news, it could have been worse. By the end of the day, I managed to get the light to go off after I really pushed the engine on my way to Millington.

On top of that, I picked someone up from the scene of a house fire and another from an apartment shooting. In both cases, the individuals acted as if it were just a normal part of their day, which was unsettling. I pushed through the day, managing to meet my daily goal, but I'm not going to come close to achieving my weekly quest. However, that's okay because a new quest starts Friday morning. It looks like it's going to be a long week ahead.

Rough start....

I'm doing my best to stay optimistic, but it's definitely a challenge. Last night was restless; I tossed and turned, barely catching any sleep. Still, I pushed myself out of bed and faced the day head-on. I sifted through my daily agenda, organized a portion of the cluttered garage, and made meaningful strides on my backup blog. I also chipped away at my novel, putting in solid effort, and managed to complete three out of four of my courses. Eventually, I decided to take a short nap; it didn't rejuvenate me as much as I hoped, but it also didn't leave me worse off. Later, I headed to work, feeling the weight of exhaustion settling in. When I returned home, I was drained, so I turned up the music to lift my spirits and caught up on my game for a little escape before sinking into bed for the night.

What hell is this?...

..awww, isn't it cute?....

December 18, 2025

Rainy days and Mondays....

Today, I managed to accomplish one of my two goals. The weather added a somber touch to the day, as rain cascaded down in gentle sheets, creating a rhythmic patter against the windows. Although it wasn't Monday, the mood in the air felt reminiscent of the start of the week—tinged with an uneasy anticipation. The sky hung low and heavy with a blanket of gray clouds, which occasionally deepened to a brooding black, as if threatening a deluge.

Inside the car, the customers sat fidgeting like restless animals, their anxious energy palpable and often overwhelming. Navigating their demands felt like wading through thick mud, each interaction presenting its own frustrations. Despite these challenges, I pushed through and reached my goal, though I didn't soar beyond it as I had hoped. With plenty of time left on the clock, a distinct lack of motivation settled over me, like the clouds outside. Recognizing this, I ultimately decided it was wiser to call it a day, allowing myself to shift focus towards tomorrow and the promise of new opportunities ahead.

On a roll....

Despite the frustrations of the workday, my personal time unfolded in a pleasantly unexpected way. I delved into my novel, and to my delight, I made considerable strides. I meticulously edited an entire chapter, and the result was nothing short of excellent. If I continue at this pace, I might find myself ready to publish by the end of January, an exhilarating thought! Yet, a flicker of doubt lingers in my mind about maintaining this momentum; there remains a mountain of editing still to conquer.

One of the unique challenges in my writing process lies in my use of a voice recorder to capture my thoughts at the moment, which I later transcribe. While this method allows for spontaneity, it can occasionally result in a disjointed flow of ideas. Consequently, I frequently find myself grappling with significant plot holes. The silver lining, however, is that I'm identifying these issues during the editing phase, rather than waiting for the often harrowing moment of receiving reader feedback.

The long and short of it...

..but good or bad?....

December 19, 2025

Always on days like today....

The new quest has dropped, and, of course, I encountered an unexpected delay. I was having a great day, making back-to-back runs, when I got assigned a trip from the airport to Oxford, MS. That took three hours out of my schedule, and I really needed those three hours. I'm not sure if I can make that time up over the next two days, but I'm going to do my best.

I also had an unsettling experience after dark with one of those pickup trucks that have super bright lights everywhere. Those should be illegal! The driver tailgated me for almost five miles while I was going half the speed limit the entire time. I didn't feel safe speeding up because I couldn't see anything in front of me.

I'm still on track to reach my weekly goals, but I'm not as far ahead as I wanted to be by this point. We'll see what the next two days bring.

More progress....

Today, I'm reveling in a significant triumph: I've just completed another chapter of my novel! The words flowed easily, and I feel like I'm on a creative surge. If I maintain this momentum, my manuscript could be ready for publishing in just a month. That's when the real adventure starts!

Work, however, was frustrating today, as it often is when unexpected issues arise, and let's be honest, they frequently do. I spent the day navigating through a series of annoying disruptions that tested my patience.

As I look ahead to the new year, I'm filled with anticipation for the substantial changes coming my way. I genuinely believe these shifts will be beneficial, but I also recognize that I have some important areas to focus on. Many of these revolve around personal growth and creative pursuits, particularly my writing. I recently completed a writing course, and I was amazed when I compared some of my earlier pieces to my newer work; the improvement is striking. Now, it's crucial that I harness the skills I've gained to enhance my current projects and bring them to completion.

By the time I finally arrived home, I felt drained, ready to simply stare at the wall and decompress. For the first time in ages, I found myself fighting to stay awake until midnight. But somehow, I prevailed, and here we are, one victory at a time!

Nope...

..not gonna do it....

December 20, 2025

Not a great day....

The main challenge I faced today revolved around the significant distance between ride requests. It felt like drivers were few and far between, causing me to be consistently routed out toward the suburbs. After dropping off passengers in those quieter areas, I would frequently receive requests leading me back to the bustling center of the city. This back-and-forth cycle persisted for a grueling eight hours, making it increasingly difficult to achieve my goals for the week. Despite my hard work throughout these days, I come to the realization that reaching those targets may be out of reach. Yet, I also recognize that we're approaching the end of the year, which prompts a shift in my focus toward January 5th, marking the first full week of the new year. Until then, I plan to take a step back and ease into the quieter pace.

Another Chapter....

Today marked a significant milestone in my creative journey as I proudly completed another chapter of my novel. After a period of experimentation, I've finally found my rhythm, dedicating time each day to edit and refine my work. If I can maintain this steady pace, I'll be well on my way to publishing by mid-January, which is just around the corner. With about 15 chapters remaining, I'm looking forward to diving into my final read-through after the first week of January, eager to polish every word and nuance.

In addition to my writing achievements, I'm pleased to report that I've been diligent in keeping up with my daily commitments, successfully avoiding any missed tasks lately. However, I'm currently grappling with some challenges when it comes to playing the guitar; my fingers aren't moving as fluidly as I would like them to. This setback wasn't entirely unexpected, as I've had similar struggles in the past. Part of the difficulty arises from my battle with arthritis. While playing the guitar is often hailed as a homeopathic remedy for alleviating the symptoms of arthritis, I've found that it mainly assists in managing the discomfort rather than providing outright relief. Fortunately, with each passing day, the exercises are becoming slightly easier, and I'm noticing a reduction in pain levels. Still, the unseasonably warm weather seems to exacerbate my symptoms, a frustrating complication I'm learning to navigate.

Center and balance...

..yeah, that may not happen....

December 21, 2025

Bad policies.....

I had meticulously planned to devote ten hours of my day to work, but unfortunately, everything unraveled before I got the chance. Just three hours into my shift, I caught a whiff of the refreshing peppermint scent wafting around me; a few red-and-whte-striped peppermints lay in my snack bag, a small indulgence I had for long drives. What's interesting, though, is that these little candies can sometimes be employed by individuals to disguise the telltale odor of alcohol.

This morning took a surprising turn when one of my passengers felt compelled to call Uber, alleging that I was drinking while driving due to the supposed smell of alcohol emanating from my vehicle. In truth, the only aroma present was that of peppermint. This incident made me ponder the possibility that this passenger may have people in her life who resort to such tactics to mask their own drinking issues.

Regrettably, Uber doesn't seem to conduct thorough investigations into these types of claims. When a passenger raises an accusation of drinking, they promptly suspend the driver without delay. The process of reinstatement can be painfully slow, lasting anywhere from 24 to 48 hours while they carry out their inquiry. I find myself genuinely curious about the specifics of their investigation process.

This entire ordeal has cast a shadow over my state of mind, leaving me feeling anxious and frustrated. The bureaucratic fallout from this situation has already cost me $340, adding financial strain to my emotional distress. The accusation feels both slanderous and deeply damaging to my reputation. For now, I'm choosing to hold off on any further actions. I've laid out my side of the story to Uber and now find myself in limbo, waiting for them to conclude their investigation.

The choices....

I spent the morning before work meticulously preparing to hit the ground running and achieve my goals for the day. As you may have heard, the best-laid plans often go awry, and mine were no exception. Despite the small setbacks threatening to derail my optimism, I did my best to maintain a cheerful facade; at least on the surface. Deep within, though, I sometimes feel like a seething volcano, bubbling with pent-up frustration, ready to erupt at any moment. Fortunately, I've managed to delicately place a small, playful kitten atop that metaphorical volcano, preventing an explosive outburst. I admit, that imagery might be a touch exaggerated, but it captures my inner turmoil.

When I returned home, I faced two divergent paths: I could either channel my swirling negative energy into something creative, or succumb to the temptation of wallowing in my own thoughts. I opted for the former. Earlier in the day, we opened one Christmas present early, and mine turned out to be a beautiful new pan flute. Carrying it with me throughout the day, it became a comforting refuge amidst my moments of negativity.

As evening descended, I played the pan flute, letting its soothing notes ripple through the air. I also indulged my fingers in a series of melodic exercises on the guitar, and even ventured to noodle a little on the saxophone, losing myself in the music's embrace. To keep my spirits afloat, I diligently stayed caught up with my daily journal, pouring my thoughts onto the pages for the coming week, and escaped into a bit of "Star Trek: Enterprise," letting the sci-fi series transport me to distant worlds.

I'm genuinely impressed with myself for not allowing the negative mood to consume me too quickly. I can still feel it lurking at the edges, like a shadow waiting for the perfect moment, but right now, I feel a sense of control, a delicate balance between my emotions and the vibrant life I strive to cultivate.

Well, isn't that...

..Wizard....

December 22, 2025

Into my own hands.....

I was hopeful that the issue regarding the report of my drinking on the job would be resolved quickly, but that did not happen. In hindsight, I realize that if I had been more proactive, I could have found the police officer yesterday and requested a breathalyzer test, which didn't occur to me at the time. When I learned that I would be put out of service for seven days, I inquired about my options. After some negotiation, a hair follicle test was ordered, and since I do not drink, I am confident I will pass it quickly. I anticipate returning to work on Christmas morning. Isn't that wonderful? If you're not familiar with the term "wizard," it's an English expression that adds a twist of sarcasm to the phrase "isn't that special."

Bidda bing, bidda bang....

After receiving the news that I would be down for at least three days starting yesterday, I decided not to brood or sulk. Instead, I took charge and worked through the day to maintain a positive state of mind. I accomplished quite a bit in the garage, planned out my new office, worked on the pool by lowering the water level, and visited all three gyms.

While I was at ATC swimming, I met someone from Warriors, another gym I had checked out that offers full-contact mixed martial arts. I agreed to go with him to take another look around. I got to do some sparring; I got my rear end kicked in bare-hand mixed martial arts, but I easily took him down in jousting sparring. Since he was around 20 and I'm 60, I didn't feel too bad about it.

I also made significant progress on my novel, so I'm counting today as a good day. Finally, I planned for the next two days and am working on an active strategy to recover the lost funds. It will be a bit challenging, but I have two days to prepare. Tomorrow, I have a lengthy to-do list. I will not be returning to Warriors and will probably only visit one of the gyms. By the end of the day, I felt quite sore.

Not good...

..but handling it well....

December 23, 2025

Idle hands.....

It has been said that idle hands are the devil's playground. Well, I find myself on a forced sabbatical, likely until Thursday morning, so my hands have been quite idle. What I don't understand is where the devil resides. You would think that with me sitting around, he would be eager to play some games. But unfortunately, he seems to be busy doing whatever the devil does, just hanging around with me.

Not really sitting around doing nothing....

Even though I cannot work, I am still getting things done. The most significant accomplishment today was making two lasagnas. One was based on Laura's family's recipe, while the other was my own. The two recipes are quite different, and I only tasted mine. It turned out pretty good, just like I remembered. Tomorrow, I plan to taste Laura's version.

I also drove Willow to the mall and picked her up when she was finished shopping. I told her she needed to get me a gift for taking her out, and she came back with a fur boa, which is pretty cool.

I had several other tasks on my list for the day, but they'll have to wait until tomorrow since I didn't anticipate how long cooking would take. I forgot how time-consuming my lasagna recipe is! However, I hadn't had that craving in about three or four years, so maybe I'm set for a while.

Head back to normal...

..whatever that is....

Time to plan.....

The past few days have been extremely frustrating and challenging. I've done my best to take the situation in stride, and by the end of today, both rideshare companies resolved the issues. Everything is in order, and I'm ready to get back to work tomorrow morning.

At this point, I need to focus and work hard to make up for lost time. I'm a full week behind, and bringing everything together will require a lot of effort. I also have some paperwork issues to address, and I hope these won't impact my driving. Right now, I can't afford any more setbacks. I've tried my best to handle this situation calmly, but my patience has reached its limit.

Christmas eve....

It's a beautiful Christmas Eve, but instead of a snowy landscape, it's 70 degrees outside. It doesn't quite feel like the holiday, but that's alright. I double-checked everything for work and I'm set for tomorrow morning.

Today, I tackled several tasks on my to-do list, including cleaning both bathrooms, scrubbing the kitchen island, and mopping the kitchen floor. I also began preparing for the 2026 blog. I'm feeling ready for the new year and looking forward to returning to work.

I did try to cross off a major item from my list by taking the photos I've been meaning to get for about six months, but it didn't go well. I got through the entire series only to discover a focus issue when I reviewed them. I'm not sure how that happened, but it looks like I'll have to start over from scratch.

The family enjoyed our traditional Christmas Eve, opening presents while we ate frozen pizzas. Everyone received something they liked. The biggest surprise was the heavy bag from Willow, I definitely didn't see that coming. I looked into mounting it from the ceiling, but that might not be feasible. That's okay; I'll add a heavy bag stand to my Amazon list and handle it that way. I'm looking forward to incorporating it into my daily routine.

Overall, it was a decent day, and I'm ready to go back to work.

Ho Ho Ho...

..Not too far from the truth....

Family and Friends.....

I recognize that there's something quite amusing about what I experienced, although I may not fully grasp it. It was a very busy day, with rides conveniently close together. The amusing aspect of the situation was the presence of two distinct types of riders.

On one hand, I transported small families, including spoiled little children who were screaming for candy and ice cream. On the other hand, there were young ladies named Candy and Ice Cream, who were delivering special Christmas treats to their clients. To clarify, it was a busy day for ladies of the evening. They started their work around 3:00 in the afternoon, dressed like elves and sporting Santa hats, ready to present their special gifts to their "friends" for Christmas Day.

As an observer, I found it quite interesting. As evening approached and the sun began to set, it felt like some kind of cosmic joke. First, I would pick up a family and transport them to their new location only to then pick up a sex worker. It seemed like a giant pendulum swinging back and forth. There's probably some psychology behind this phenomenon, but I don't have the energy to explore it right now. I'm just going to sit back and enjoy the experience.

The intriguing part about the professional ladies was that I was picking them up from the same location, yet there was a remarkable diversity among them. They ranged from around 20 years old to those in their 60s. I transported a total of five or six of them to their destinations, and the variety was astounding. Overall, I'm going to consider it a good day at work and move on.

Christmas day....

Christmas Day feels just like any other day to me. While the ladies stayed at home enjoying their time, I headed back to work. I'm relieved that Uber managed to resolve the issues I was having, and I hope not to face that kind of annoyance again for a long time. Before going into work, I completed my entire morning list and tackled a few extra tasks, even finishing another chapter of my novel. Tomorrow morning, I plan to do a final proofreading of that chapter, and then it will be ready. I had intended to stop by the gym after work, but it seems they were experiencing a power outage, so that didn't happen. I don't plan to start my rigorous gym routine until January 1st, but there's no harm in getting a head start. When I got home, I was tired, but I felt satisfied with my day, so I'll take it.

Hell?...

..is that you?....

A rough day.....

The day started out poorly and it went downhill from there. When I first logged in to the Uber app, I waited almost an hour for my first run and it was a $5 ride. Everything after that was driving 20 minutes to do $5. Not the greatest way to spend the day. Thankfully, yesterday was a decent day and it was able to compensate for the lack of positive rides today.

The highlight of the day was getting pulled over by the Memphis task force and having to spend 90 minutes by the side of the road while they carried out their investigation. It seemed like they were frustrated. They had four cars and seven officers checking on me, which must have been quite costly for that 90 minutes that ultimately accomplished nothing. I might have been better off if I had just complied with their requests instead of trying to be clever. When they asked if they could search my car, I questioned whether they had probable cause. The anger in the officer's eyes was clear. I should have simply agreed, as they searched my car anyway. America feels like a police state, and that's all I'm going to say on the issue for now.

Bad Juju....

I don't know what it was about today, but I am not feeling well at all. I have muscle aches and a headache that just will not go away. I pushed through work and managed to keep an even keel for most of the day, but it was quite frustrating. Before I went into work, I got the next chapter of the novel edited but it still has to be checked. I also have to add a paradigm shift for my main character because I have them going in a different direction than they started and I did not explain it well. I did not do my guitar today and I did not touch the saxophone. But I did some work on the programming and I am working on drawing my eye in my art course. When I got home, I was really not feeling well and I did not even eat dinner. I just took the time to relax. Today was a challenging day for me; I'm not feeling well at all. I have muscle aches and a persistent headache that just won't go away. I managed to push through work and keep a steady demeanor for most of the day, but it was quite frustrating.

Before heading to work, I edited the next chapter of my novel, but it still needs to be reviewed. I also need to incorporate a paradigm shift for my main character because they are heading in a different direction than originally intended, and I didn't explain this shift clearly.

I didn't practice my guitar today, nor did I touch the saxophone. However, I worked on some programming and practiced drawing the eye for my art course. When I got home, I still wasn't feeling well, so I skipped dinner and chose to relax instead.

Really?...

..that many?....

Fighting for scraps.....

Today was one of those days I find myself dreading. For reasons I can't quite pinpoint, it felt like every rideshare driver in the area had decided to hit the road. As I navigated through the airport, I was struck by the sight of more than 30 rideshare lights flickering in the waiting area, even though there weren't any planes scheduled to land. The drivers were just idling, each with their eyes glued to their screens, waiting for the next ping. This created a chaotic scene whenever a ride request came through, turning the competition into a frenzy reminiscent of little chihuahuas scrambling for a meager scrap of food.

Yet, amidst the hustle and bustle, a silver lining appeared on the horizon: the economy hotel located in the heart of the red-light district had expelled all its sex workers. I never discovered the reasons behind this sudden eviction, but I knew that their regular hotel was a mere mile and a half away, a swift five-minute drive. I ended up spending the better part of two hours shuttling these individuals from one hotel to the other, often transporting them in groups of two to four along with their personal belongings. Even though the experience added little to my earnings, it was a welcome distraction that kept me from slipping into the red.

Reflecting on the day, I would have to say it ranked as one of the worst I've experienced this year in terms of hourly earnings. When all was said and done, I managed to clear about $13 an hour after expenses. I can only hope that tomorrow offers a better outlook.

Yuck....

One silver lining about having a rough workday is that I wasn't feeling well either. I struggle to enjoy a good day when I'm under the weather because it negatively affects my mood. This morning, before work, I realized I wasn't feeling like myself, and that feeling lingered throughout the day. Being listless and lethargic isn't ideal, but perhaps I can push through this and find my way back to a positive mindset before the new year begins. Look at that, I'm managing to put a positive spin on a negative situation! Everyone, be amazed!

And, the week is done...

..But there is another one behind it....

December 28, 2025

More of the same.....

Overall, today was quite similar to yesterday. There were a lot of us on the road, but not many riders, so we all had to compete for what was available. The weather isn't helping either, with a drop of 25 degrees toward the end of the day. Since this is the end of the work week, I'm just going to focus on next week.

Time to trudge....

This week has been a struggle to find the motivation to get moving, but I'm holding onto the hope that the upcoming week will usher in a positive change. Work has been particularly demanding, compounded by the relentless heavy driver attendance that made each ride feel like a marathon. On top of it all, I'm still battling a nagging sense of being under the weather, but I'm managing to push through.

Despite these challenges, I carved out some precious moments before work to make strides in my novel, and I continued to delve into it after returning home, losing myself in the world I'm creating. On the practical side of things, I tackled the task of taking down the Christmas decorations from the front yard, the gusty wind swirling around me as I pulled each one from the ground.

As the year draws to a close, I find myself reflecting on what has passed and eagerly anticipating the new challenges that await in the coming year.

Nibbles and nips...

..not fun at all....

What was annoying.....

I may be feeling a bit sensitive right now, but there are several things about Uber that are starting to annoy me. For instance, the long drives for short fares are becoming increasingly frustrating. Today, I drove 20 miles for a six-dollar ride, which is happening more frequently.

I've also noticed that riders on low-paying trips tend to take their time coming out when I arrive. Today alone, I had five different rides under five dollars where the riders took more than seven minutes to meet me.

The most frustrating experience I had today involved a rider at a weigh station in West Memphis, AR. Multiple drivers had canceled the trip because they couldn't find him. The GPS was directing us to the wrong side of the highway, into a natural area meant for biking and hiking. Unfortunately, previous drivers didn't bother to check the map to see that the location was incorrect. It took me over an hour to reach the rider, and I only earned six dollars for the trip. Just a series of little annoyances.

I got this....

Although work can be annoying, I'm trying to take it in stride. There are certain issues that are so frustrating they need to be addressed. One of the most significant problems in Memphis right now is that AT&T is conducting work throughout the city as part of a network upgrade. They are digging holes in the streets, typically about four feet by four feet. They tear up the asphalt, remove the debris, and then refill the holes with dirt and stone.

Initially, they placed barricades around these holes, but that practice seems to have stopped. They also aren't repaving the holes, and due to the materials they're using, the dirt and stone are quickly getting displaced, creating large holes across the city. In some cases, there can be as many as ten of these holes on a single road, forcing drivers to navigate over them, which is damaging our vehicle suspensions. Coupled with the additional speed bumps added throughout the city, Memphis is no longer a driver-friendly place.

When repairs are made on the streets, they're often done carelessly. I'm considering writing a letter to the mayor about these issues. I doubt it will lead to any change, but I sense an opportunity here that I'm not quite sure how to approach. Other than that, my day was uneventful. I'm feeling frustrated on multiple levels, but that's nothing new.

Isn't that special?...

..Yeah, not really....

December 30, 2025

Down in the trenches.....

Due to my status, I can choose the quality of riders I accept. Until today, I had been set to only accept riders with four or five-star ratings; those who have proven themselves to be decent people. Today, however, there was a significant influx of drivers on the road, which meant we were all competing for a very limited number of rides. Before I even took my first run, I ran into Michael, who showed me his program that indicated there were 322 drivers in the area waiting for rides. This did not bode well for a positive business experience, as I ended up waiting more than an hour for my first ride, which paid only $7.00.

In response to the situation, I adjusted my algorithm to accept all riders. This change allowed me to meet my goal for the day, but it exposed me to a different class of clientele. One particular rider stood out. Toward the end of my shift, I received a $30 ride request; however, I had to drive 22 miles to pick him up in Millington, with the destination set for Southaven. He had a one-star rating, and I soon discovered why. As I got within a mile of picking him up, he changed his destination, causing the ride value to drop to about $7.00. This seemed like a bait-and-switch tactic, where someone in an outlying area lures drivers in with a big fare and then changes to a smaller fare, knowing no one would come to get them for that low price.

Ultimately, this experience was frustrating enough that I gave him a one-star review, specifically noting the bait-and-switch. All things considered, I met my goal for the day, so I'm just going to let it go and hope for a better day tomorrow.

The year is almost done....

Today, the personal side of my life felt quite boring. I completed my morning routine, but that was about it. I didn't have time to play my guitar or do anything extra before work. When I got home, I was still a bit frustrated from dealing with the riders, but I remembered to reset the algorithm before logging off. Tomorrow is New Year's Eve, and I'm hoping for a better day.

It comes to an end...

..not with a roar, but with a whisper....

December 31, 2025

Not terrible.....

I anticipated that today would be a whirlwind of activity, but surprisingly, it unfolded as just another ordinary day. I steeled myself for the chaotic atmosphere that typically accompanies New Year's Eve, yet to my relief, there were an ample number of drivers on the road. Aside from a few unwelcome moments involving some questionable public displays and a smattering of signs of illness, the day remained unusually serene.

As twilight descended and the countdown to the new year began, both children and adults started to let loose on the streets. The air crackled with their energy as laughter and shouts filled the atmosphere. They reveled in the festivities, cheerfully launching Roman candles into the night sky, their colorful sparks illuminating the faces of onlookers and darting toward passing cars. It was fine until those roman candles were pointed at the cars.

Having achieved my goals for the day, I felt it was time to call it a night. I had no desire to engage with the escalating mischief any longer, so I decided to close out the year and embrace the calm of the next day.

The New Year is here....

The morning dawned sluggishly, each moment feeling like I was wading through thick molasses. My thoughts felt tangled and elusive, as if they had slipped away just when I needed them most. It wasn't the ideal way to kick off the final day of the year. Still, I forged ahead, determined to make the most of it. To my surprise, rolling through work turned out to be far smoother than I had expected; tasks that seemed daunting earlier fell effortlessly into place.

By evening, I returned home, ready to unwind in the comforting embrace of my living room. I set my lamp to dim daylight, soft glow casting gentle shadows as I sank into my work chair, letting the worries of the day dissipate. It was a rather uneventful way to bid farewell to the year, but sometimes, a quiet, uneventful evening is a welcome pause, a simple joy among the chaos of life.
