Welcome to The Journey

An open book journey of Christopher William Klein

Greetings: April this year brought a significant challenge that tested my resilience in unexpected ways. Over the course of the month, my car was rendered unusable for three of the four weeks, leaving me in a tough spot. This situation had a ripple effect on many aspects of my life, complicating my daily routines and making simple tasks feel like monumental hurdles. The absence of reliable transportation forced me to rethink my plans, juggle my responsibilities, and adapt to a new normal, all while navigating the frustrations of being carless.

My peanuts are broken...

..no, seriously....

May 01, 2026

That was disappointing........

I put in a tremendous amount of effort today, fully believing I was making substantial strides in my work. However, as I evaluated my progress at the end of the day, I found that I was merely on schedule, which left me feeling rather disheartened. It was yet another day characterized by extensive journeys to pick up relatively brief rides. The compensation was satisfying, offering a sense of financial advancement that temporarily lifted my spirits. As the hours ticked away, I felt the pressure mounting; I needed to return home promptly to drop off the rental car. Unfortunately, my last assignment took me to the farthest reaches of my usual territory, resulting in a nearly thirty-minute ride back that would go unpaid, further adding to my disappointment.

Rental and the Jersey side....

As I finally pulled into my driveway, I glanced at the clock, realizing I had made it home just five minutes shy of my intended goal. With a sense of urgency, I quickly swapped out my car for the rental, then headed down the road to refuel. My stomach grumbled in protest, a reminder of my growing irritation and hunger. Before I could indulge in a proper meal, we had a brief stop at the dollar store to pick up a few essentials.

While navigating the bustling shopping complex, Laura, ever the enthusiast, suggested I try Jersey Mike's. This was a place that had piqued my interest for some time, and I was eager to see if it lived up to the hype. As I stepped inside, the tantalizing aroma of freshly baked bread and seasoned meats enveloped me, and I could hardly wait to dig in.

I opted for the Italian hoagie, and the moment I took my first bite, I knew I had made the right choice. The flavors were rich and authentic, reminiscent of the delis in Italy and Philadelphia, but my excitement was somewhat tempered by the fact that they had used domestic ham instead of the imported variety I had hoped for. It was tasty nonetheless, and each mouthful was a delightful experience.

However, as I looked at the final bill, I felt a wave of disappointment wash over me. I had expected to enjoy a footlong for just over $11, but to my dismay, what was presented to me was only half that size. While the flavors were undeniably delicious, the price tag felt rather steep for the portion I received.

This experience ignited a spark of inspiration within me; if Jersey Mike's could source the ingredients to create such a delicious Italian hoagie, perhaps I could do the same. Laura, always resourceful, found the ingredients at Sprouts, and now this store has firmly established itself on my list of places to explore for my own culinary endeavors.

My peanuts are broken...

Short day and peanuts........

I touched on an interesting idea yesterday in my heading, but I didn't delve into it further. When I mentioned that my peanuts were broken, I was being quite literal. During our recent shopping adventure, I asked Laura to pick up a bag of peanuts for me. I have a fondness for snacking while driving; there's something satisfying about the tactile experience of shelling nuts as I make my way down the road. While I absolutely adore pistachios, their price can be quite steep. Peanuts, on the other hand, although not the most economical snack, are certainly friendlier on the wallet. I've been enjoying peanuts for as long as I can remember, and I'm quite experienced at opening their tough shells. However, something seems off about this particular batch I bought. Despite my best efforts to crack them open, the shells seem to crumble into inelegant pieces instead of breaking apart cleanly. The nuts inside taste perfectly fine, but they appear to have been over-roasted, giving them a slightly off flavor.

Today, I made a conscious decision to cut my day short to connect with my family and Rowan, who is currently in Japan. Regrettably, the last assignment I received took me almost all the way to Forest City, which lies about 60 miles outside of Memphis. There was an abundance of work available that could have allowed me to return to the city, but unfortunately, there just wasn't enough time to make the trip back. This week is poised to be challenging, but at least I have some work lined up, so it's not a total loss.

Opportunity knocking, again....

The morning began with an unsettling heaviness that clung to me like a thick fog. Despite having clocked in a solid seven and a half hours of sleep, I felt as if I were dragging a weighted wagon behind me as I reluctantly rolled out of bed. The remnants of fatigue shadowed me throughout the day, making even the simplest tasks feel monumental.

Initially, I had mapped out a straightforward plan: participate in a crucial call with my son in Japan, then retreat to the solace of my bed for some much-needed rest before a very early departure tomorrow morning. However, fate had different intentions. Just as I was settling into my routine, my phone rang with an unexpected opportunity. It was a representative from Walmart, inquiring about my availability for a potential maintenance position in Collierville. The manager's voice sparked a flicker of excitement within me, and without a moment's hesitation, I accepted the invitation for an interview that very day.

Instead of succumbing to exhaustion and curling up in bed, I rummaged through my wardrobe and slipped into my sharpest suit, feeling a surge of determination. I made my way to Walmart, anticipation lifting my spirits just a bit. The interview was brief, lasting less than ten minutes, but I focused intently on every word. Von, the front-end lead, seemed impressed as she shared that she would recommend me to her supervisor for the role.

With that little victory tucked away, I returned home, feeling a mix of relief and hope, ready to finally call it a day.

So much fun...

Rolling through mud........

Today marked a disappointing conclusion to an already frustrating week. Everything felt distant, and the pay didn't seem worth the effort. Just when I thought I was making progress, I found myself stuck with only two or three small rides. Although today is the end of the work week, there's no rest for me. Normally, I take Mondays off, but that won't happen this week. I need to stay on top of my responsibilities, which means I'll be working on my day off.

I have to admit that the morning was interesting. Being Sunday, I expected to start out with churchgoers, but that was not the case. First, I picked up a duo coming out of the Purple Diamond, a local strip club. They were young, slightly inebriated, and it sounded like they had a great time. After dropping them off, I headed to my next assignment, and things got even more intriguing.

My next passenger was a 40-year-old woman who seemed to be high on something. At first, I thought she had consumed too much caffeine, but she quickly clarified that it was actually a mix of Molly and mushrooms. She had spent her entire evening at a "marshmallow concert." I'm not a fan of that artist, but I was glad she enjoyed herself. Unfortunately, she was experiencing hot flashes and felt overdressed. I kept my face away from the rearview mirror and gently reminded her that she was in public and should remain dressed. When I finally dropped her off, she left a trail of her clothes across her front lawn. Good for her!

Unfortunately, the rest of the riders were much more mundane in comparison. I took a short break in the middle of the day to handle some personal errands, but all things considered, it has been a very disappointing week.

Work after work....

I started my day lethargically again, but since my first ride was scheduled, I didn't leave the house until 5:15 AM. This timing allowed me to get down to the purple diamond and pick up the boys, and it also gave me enough time to complete my entire morning checklist, which felt productive.

I took a short break in the middle of the day to do some shopping for necessities. Once I got home for the day, I had to hit the ground running. I prepared some new rolls for lunch tomorrow and then focused on taking care of the front yard. I mowed the lawn and did some weed whacking. I had planned to clean the pool today as well, but I completely ran out of time and energy.

Afterward, I sat at my desk to catch up on this blog and a few other tasks. Then it was time to call it a day, and unfortunately, the pool will just have to wait until tomorrow.

Turn to face the strange...

..CHANGES....

When the call comes........

It has taken two years, but I finally received the call. I was having a frustrating day, traveling long distances for very small fares. With each ping of my phone, my annoyance grew. I was on a ride, taking a pair of truck drivers to pick up a U-Haul to clean out their truck, only to discover they had the wrong address, which was five miles off. Just then, my phone rang with a spam call. Unless it's my wife, I rarely answer my phone while driving, especially with a passenger. However, something compelled me to pick it up this time. I'm glad I did because it was Jay from Walmart informing me that I had been chosen for the asset protection agent position. He told me to watch my email for the official offer letter. After two years of waiting, it looks like I will be gainfully employed once everything is finalized. I have mixed feelings about it, but it will be good to be in a position where I can enjoy benefits like vacation and paid time off. I can shift my ride-sharing work to a support role and go from there.

The pool, you fool!....

Despite feeling the heavy weight of fatigue as the sun began to rise, I pushed through and completed my morning checklist with determination, making sure to start my day on time. The thought of my novel weighed on my mind; I'm about halfway through the proofing process. If I can gather the energy to finish it and discover a way to bring it to publication, there's a chance it could generate some much-needed extra income. I'm not deluding myself into believing it will top the bestseller lists, but life is full of surprises, and you never know what the universe might have in store for you.

When I returned home later that afternoon, I the ladies set off on their own adventure to celebrate Red's graduation. This left me with the daunting task of cleaning the pool, a chore that had been neglected for far too long. The water had turned murky, and debris floated lazily across the surface, making it a labor-intensive job. It took a significant amount of time and effort to transform the once vibrant oasis back to its sparkling glory. By the time I set down my cleaning tools, exhaustion had settled into my bones. I could finally relax, and that's precisely what I did. I pulled chicken, leaving me with a small task for tomorrow; to whip up some Chinese chicken. But that was a concern for another day, and for now, I savored the moment of peace.

Rainy days...

..but not Sunday....

May 05, 2026

What a horrible (weather) day........

The day dawned shrouded in a thick mist, the landscape cloaked in a mysterious veil that blurred the outlines of trees and fields. By midday, however, the weather took a dramatic turn, unleashing a relentless tempest that transformed the once-peaceful scene into a battleground of wind and rain. The incessant downpour weighed heavily on my spirits, but that was only part of the tale unfolding around me.

Surprisingly, rather than flocking to rides as one might expect during such dreary weather, the roads felt desolate, almost like a forgotten desert. The usual buzz of activity was replaced by an eerie quiet, with few willing to brave the elements.

When lunchtime rolled around, I discovered I was only halfway to my intended goal, a cruel reminder of the day's challenges. My only glimmer of hope came in the form of a 50-mile journey to Covington. This was no leisurely drive; it involved picking up a truck with a recovery driver at an impound yard. The catch? I had to ride back empty-handed, sans any payment. With gas prices climbing steadily, what should have been a simple task turned into a weary uphill battle.

Overall, it was a dismal day, and while I managed to keep my weekly goals on track, I felt as if I was barely clinging on, caught in an unrelenting storm both outside and within.

A day of days....

The morning unfolded smoothly at first, though I encountered an unexpected hurdle when I needed to update the insurance information for both rideshare applications. This little task ended up making me run about 15 minutes late. The sky outside was cloaked in heavy clouds, and the dreary weather cast a shadow over my mood, which didn't bode well for the rest of the day.

Once I finally returned home, I decided to indulge in some comfort food and prepared a delicious spread of Phoenix and Dragon Chinese cuisine. The aromatic scents filled the kitchen, creating a cozy atmosphere that helped me unwind. I spent the evening in a state of relaxation, enjoying the quiet and trying to shake off the stress of the day. With only five days remaining until my next day off, the weight of my responsibilities was beginning to feel a bit overwhelming.

To end the night on a brighter note, I settled in to watch the second episode of *Twilight*. It felt fitting; I was in the mood for some supernatural drama featuring vampires and werewolves. The captivating storyline allowed me to escape into another world, if only for a little while. And I spent a small amount of time on the novel.

Finally, a decent day...

..There and back again....

May 06, 2026

Far and wide and back........

As the day dawned, a heavy sense of foreboding settled over me. The sky roiled with dark clouds, and flashes of lightning illuminated the horizon, crackling like Thor himself was hammering against the celestial vault. I steeled myself for a series of disappointments, expecting the worst. However, to my astonishment, the day unfolded in a way I could hardly have imagined.

One after another, I received three remarkable ride requests, each more rewarding than the last, and this exhilarating momentum carried on throughout the day. There was a moment of trial, though—a particularly challenging ride whisked me off to Covington, leaving me stranded without a return assignment. Yet, rather than succumb to frustration, I managed to snag a few smaller jobs, which gradually helped me regain my rhythm.

By the time the sun dipped below the horizon, I found myself not only surpassing my initial expectations but also ahead of my goals for the week. What began as a day shrouded in uncertainty transformed into an unexpectedly joyful and fulfilling journey.

A day of days....

The morning dawned as it often does, bathed in soft, golden light across the sky after a surprisingly restful night's sleep. I rose from bed, shaking off the remnants of a few peculiar dreams that lingered at the edges of my mind. After a quick shower, I made my way to the kitchen, where the rich aroma of coffee greeted me as I prepared a hearty breakfast. The warm, crispy bacon paired perfectly with scrambled eggs and toast slathered in butter. Feeling fueled and ready for the day, I efficiently ticked off my morning tasks, ensuring I hadn't overlooked anything in my whirlwind of preparations.

As I went about my morning routine, I couldn't help but feel a twinge of impatience regarding my offer letter from Walmart. I knew the wheels of bureaucracy could turn slowly, but the anticipation was hard to shake off.

When the sun began to sink low in the sky after a long day at work, I walked into my home with a sense of satisfaction. To unwind, I decided to dive into my Virtual Reality system, donning the headset for an exhilarating session of shadow boxing. The virtual world enveloped me as I threw punches and dodged imaginary opponents, my heart racing with each move. It was a physically demanding yet invigorating workout that left me feeling alive and accomplished.

As twilight settled in, I transitioned to a more relaxed pace. With tasked errands completed, I settled down for the evening, planning for the last stretch of my workweek. The prospect of only four more days before my well-deserved break filled me with anticipation. Watching *Twilight: Eclipse*, I immersed myself in the drama unfolding on screen while multitasking to tick off a few more items on my to-do list. The evening unfolded pleasantly, setting the tone for the days ahead as I remained hopeful for a smooth path to my goals.

Back to the drudge?...

..Seriously?....

May 07, 2026

Long work for little reward........

I've been caught in a frustrating cycle of taking long trips for very little pay, and high gas prices are only making it worse. For drivers like me, fuel costs have become a major burden. Rideshare companies do not seem to be adjusting fares to reflect the rising expenses drivers have to cover. They appear to be relying on promises that gas prices will level off soon, but many of us are starting to doubt that.

Drivers with larger vehicles are being hit especially hard. Many are realizing their profits have dropped so much that the work is no longer sustainable. As a result, some are looking for other opportunities, leaving noticeable gaps in rideshare availability.

Customers are growing frustrated as well. They are left with two poor choices: pay higher fares that often do not reflect actual fuel costs, or wait longer for rides. Both lead to inconvenience and disappointment. From my conversations with other drivers, it is clear this problem could trigger a chain reaction. I think of it as a house of cards; one wrong move could bring the whole system down. Many drivers may eventually leave for other jobs, and even if conditions improve later, getting them to return could be difficult.

As for me, I have been stuck making long trips for low pay. To make matters harder, I now have to complete 60 rides in the next three days. Given how things have been going, I am not confident I can reach that goal.

The up side....

My mind feels remarkably clearer and more focused than it has in a long time. Before stepping out of the house that crisp morning, I diligently completed my usual routine, even taking the initiative to tackle a few extra tasks that had been lingering on my to-do list. As I look forward to my next day off next Monday, I feel a rush of excitement at the thought of dedicating time to perfecting my drawing of an eye; an art lesson I've been immersed in for some time but haven't quite conquered yet. With a newfound understanding of the techniques involved, I can hardly wait to see how my progress unfolds on the canvas.

At present, I find myself halfway through the intricate process of editing my novel. I'm convinced that one concentrated session could be the key to wrapping up the project, readying it for publication. My mind is already buzzing with ideas for my next book, and I've even begun jotting down thoughts in a new file. However, I'm resisting the tempting urge to dive into that world until I can bring *Awakening* to its rightful completion.

In the evening, upon returning home, I chose to unwind and embrace a slower pace, allowing myself to revel in the satisfaction of the day's accomplishments. While I felt proud of my productive morning routine, I recognized that my evening routine still requires some fine-tuning. I did take a bit of time to engage in virtual reality, experimenting with a portion of a new program, and was quickly reminded that shadowboxing is no light endeavor. After just 15 minutes of intense movement, I found myself panting and thoroughly exhausted, but also exhilarated by the challenge.

Things are turning around...

..But are they really?....

May 08, 2026

A bit ahead........

Lately, my focus has been on simply navigating through each day, which has led me to overlook the broader picture of my circumstances. However, when I took a moment to review my finances for the week, I was pleasantly surprised to discover that I've managed to stay slightly ahead;it's not a significant margin, but at least I'm not slipping further behind, a pattern I've unfortunately fallen into for quite some time now.

This week's assignments have largely tested my patience and resilience, with many long distances to cover for seemingly little reward. Today, however, felt different; it brought a much-needed balance, offering a more rewarding mix of long and short rides. There were even a couple of instances where I found myself at the airport, and to my delight, I managed to secure a ride shortly after arriving; a rare occurrence that lifted my spirits. Overall, I approached my workday with renewed optimism and a sense of accomplishment.

In addition to my daily tasks, I've also gleaned a bit more information regarding my application with Walmart. Whispers indicate that I'm likely to be stationed at the Hickory Hills store, although the details haven't fully materialized yet. For the moment, this remains an evolving situation that calls for a good dose of patience. I've been cultivating my ability to be patient lately, and I'm hopeful that this growth will continue.

Running up that hill....

No, I'm not about to burst into song like Kate Bush. After binge-watching *Stranger Things,* the haunting refrain of *Running Up That Hill* lodged itself in my brain, replaying on a loop for a week. Its vivid imagery continues to resonate, echoing thoughts I can't shake.

The morning unfolded like any other, save for a minor hiccup with the Uber app that my phone seemed to conspire against, delaying my plans by about 15 frustrating minutes. By the time I returned home that evening, a dull ache nestled itself in my temples, gradually siphoning away the remnants of my energy. The house was blissfully quiet, but the solitude couldn't coax me into picking up my saxophone or guitar, instruments that usually brought me solace. Instead, I slumped onto the chair and decided to watch *Beneath the Planet of the Apes,* a film I realized, to my surprise, I had never actually seen before. Like many cinematic offerings from that era, its plot was somewhat predictable, leaving me unsatisfied by the final scenes. Yet, the image of the cult-like underground dwellers venerating a nuclear bomb as their deity struck a chord; it made me ponder the unsettling parallels to the world we inhabit today. I'll leave that thought hanging for now, as it warrants deeper contemplation.

As the weekend draws near, anticipation builds; I'm just two short days away from my precious day off. Today, I made a pit stop at Firestone, where I had a conversation with Sal to arrange for the replacement of my steering coupler on Monday. This development means I'll likely be at home all day, so I need to craft a comprehensive list of chores to tackle and avoid squandering precious time. I'm contemplating starting my Monday morning bright and early by driving for Lyft for a few hours on my own terms, before dropping the car off at 7:00 a.m. I've told Firestone they can keep the car for the day, and I'll catch an Uber back home, allowing the day to unfold from there.

What stands out to me about Sal is his ability to set clear expectations regarding the repair process. The mechanic assigned to replace the steering coupler is somewhat of a novice in this particular task. From the tutorial videos I've perused, the procedure appears fairly straightforward, albeit straightforward doesn't always mean simple. With this in mind, Sal assured me that the mechanic will kick things off bright and early Monday morning and should wrap up the job by late afternoon. He also candidly explained that any unexpected complications could delay the repair by an extra day, and I truly value that level of honesty. What's even more reassuring is that they are willing to take on a job outside their usual expertise. In stark contrast, the dealership failed miserably in setting clear expectations for my previous axle and clutch repairs, leading me down a path of frustration and uncertainty. At this stage, my trust in Firestone far outweighs any feelings I had towards the dealership, especially given that their price tag is a mere quarter of what the dealership initially would charge.

Sometimes it is good...

..when nothing happens....

Good roll, I will take it........

Some days everything just falls into place, and this was one of those days. I didn't exceed my goals, but I also didn't lag behind. On days when things feel neutral, it's important to accept them as they are.

When things go smoothly....

Morning greeted me with a brisk chill in the air, hinting at the possibility of rain. I could feel the fresh, invigorating breeze as I stepped outside, but thankfully, it only resulted in a gentle sprinkle that danced on the pavement. Before heading to work, I had a productive start to the day, smoothly tackling all my tasks and feeling accomplished as I prepared to leave.

However, I did hit a small snag. I absentmindedly forgot to prepare my tuna for lunch. It's a minor setback that occurs from time to time, but I know I can manage to skip a meal without much inconvenience.

The afternoon and evening unfolded pleasantly, marked by a sense of productivity and anticipation with just one more day to go before a well-deserved day off. I still find myself waiting for responses from Walmart and other job applications, but there's always room for optimism about what tomorrow might hold.

In an interesting turn of events, I decided to watch *A Clockwork Orange* this evening. This isn't my first encounter with this iconic film; I fondly recalled my previous enjoyment of both the movie and the book. Yet, tonight, my perspective shifted. The unsettling images and chilling storyline left me feeling disturbed, perhaps reflecting the current state of our society in some way. But I won't delve into that right now; it might just be a fleeting mood that will pass with time.

Fall hard...

..but always fly high....

Good, until it wasn't........

Since I embarked on my rideshare journey almost two years ago, I've been fortunate enough to avoid any major negative encounters with passengers; until today. Although the experience was unfortunate, I find it hard to summon any anger; I simply choose to view it for what it was: an unexpected moment in the unpredictable world of ridesharing.

It all started when I picked up a family of four from a bustling restaurant downtown, their white outfits instantly catching my eye. The group consisted of a mother, a father, a spirited tween girl, and a grandmother who appeared to be in her late 80s or early 90s. They all wore vibrant white clothing, complete with matching hats that gave them an almost comical appearance; like a family dressed for a quirky summer event. As I drove up to them, their coordinated attire brought a smile to my face and added a light-hearted moment to my day.

The family arranged themselves in my car with mom and dad settling into the outer seats in the back, while the young girl and grandma squeezed into the middle; an arrangement that seemed innocent enough given the short 15-minute drive ahead. But I quickly reminded myself that asking "What could possibly go wrong?" is a dangerous question, one that has a way of inviting chaos.

For most of the ride, we shared polite conversation, discussing the church service the family had attended that morning filled with warmth and laughter. However, as we approached a traffic signal, a peculiar sound filled the car; an unusual noise reminiscent of a muted foghorn. Confusion washed over me until I caught a glimpse of the mother's horrified expression in the rearview mirror. It became painfully clear: Grandma had lost control of her bowels.

The initial shock was compounded by the parents' frantic efforts to roll down the windows in a desperate attempt to mitigate the now-overpowering stench. The mother, sitting directly behind me, was the first to succeed in her mission. Meanwhile, I watched in disbelief as the teenager fought against her seatbelt, attempting to make her way across her mother to reach the open window. Mid-sprint, her breakfast decided to re-emerge, painting both her mom and the side of the car in an unfortunate cascade of ill-timed vomit. I'll spare any more graphic details, but it's fair to say that the interior of the car transformed into what looked like the aftermath of a hazardous materials accident.

The final leg of our journey was marked by an uncomfortable silence as I navigated the last few blocks to their home, the air thick with lingering odors. Upon arrival, the parents were a picture of mortification, continuously apologizing while attempting to salvage what they could. They hurriedly retrieved an emergency kit from the foyer, working hard to clean up the chaos inside the car and tend to the unfortunate state of the door. The grandmother, seemingly oblivious to the turmoil, simply gazed down at her ruined dress, which was irrevocably stained from the waistline down to her once pristine white shoes.

After about half an hour of their earnest efforts, the family had done what they could to restore some semblance of order. Apologies continued to flow, yet I found the most disheartening aspect of all was that, despite the distressing circumstances, they neglected to leave me a tip. At the end of the day, I wrapped up this wild ride and made my way home, pondering a bizarre experience that I would surely never forget.

Pulling the good out of the bad....

The morning unfolded beautifully. I felt a buzz of anticipation for what I hoped would be a tremendously productive final day of work before my much-anticipated day off. I glided through my morning routine, savoring the peacefulness of the early hour. With a sense of calm, I even found time to indulge in a little extra yoga, practice some Tai Chi movements, and center my energy through Reiki. Although I had to forgo additional exercise, the morning still felt like the perfect springboard into the day ahead.

However, a mild headache began to throb at the back of my head, a gentle reminder of my missteps yesterday; straying from my usual routine and forgetting to hydrate properly. I quickly remedied this by drinking a generous glass of water, and soon enough, the headache subsided, leaving me refreshed and ready to tackle the day.

Eager to make the most of it, I was determined to exceed my weekly goals. Unfortunately, my plans took an unexpected turn when I received a call from Jay at Walmart. It seemed I had fallen through the cracks; my offer letter, which I had been eagerly awaiting, was nowhere to be found. Jay was reaching out to rectify this oversight.

The process of resolving the situation stretched on for about 90 minutes, made all the more frustrating by the pesky glitches on the Walmart website, which seemed to plague both me and the store. Finally, after what felt like an eternity of waiting, Jay managed to get everything in order. I received the offer letter, promptly accepted it, and the background check process was set into motion. I anticipated hearing back within the week; as soon as the check cleared, I'd receive a call to schedule my orientation. Although some adjustments to my work habits would be necessary, I was resolute in my commitment to make it all work.

Feeling a renewed sense of hope for the day, I glanced at the clock and realized I wouldn't have time to whip up the pizza I had planned. Instead, I decided to confront a long-standing project in the backyard. With tomorrow marking trash day, I set to work moving a significant pile of fallen branches to the curb, feeling a satisfying sense of accomplishment as I cleared the space.

During my work, a neighbor approached me; someone I had never seen before. She was visibly distressed, her face etched with worry as she shared her story about her husband leaving her for a younger woman. I listened politely as she divulged her life story, though a nagging feeling told me some details may have been embellished. When I inquired which house she lived in, her vague gesture down the street left me feeling uneasy. The interaction was unsettling, and I was relieved when I was finally able to excuse myself from the conversation.

As I resumed my task, I noticed both Joe and Dale working outside, yet she hadn't approached them. It felt peculiar, almost like a scene from a mystery novel; "Curiouser and curiouser," as Alice would say. With that thought lingering in my mind, my day came to a close. I decided to go to bed early, a sense of productivity under my belt and plans awaiting me for tomorrow's adventures.

I never rest...

..on my day of rest....

May 11, 2026

Repair time........

This was my designated day off for the week, yet I found myself waking up early, eager to seize the day. Initially, I had intended to drive for rideshare services for a few hours before making my way to the repair shop, but as I sipped my morning coffee, I realized I lacked the motivation to hit the road. Instead, I decided to focus on getting my car fixed.

Right on schedule, I arrived at Firestone, the familiar scent of motor oil and rubber greeting me as I stepped inside. I handed over my keys, requesting the replacement of the steering coupler, a repair I had been anticipating. As always, the team at Firestone delivered exceptional service, and I appreciated their attention to detail when they followed up with a reminder about my overdue oil change.

To my pleasant surprise, my car was ready for pickup a few hours earlier than I had anticipated. As I drove away, I felt a sense of relief, knowing that the repairs were complete. Despite it being a day I had intended to be free from work, I found satisfaction in the productive outcome of the day, which ended up being quite rewarding.

Look at that, Noms....

The main goal for today was to relax. Ever since I got my car back over a week ago, I have been busy and stressed out. I took today to unwind and recuperate, but I couldn't just sit idly. I decided to try a new recipe that was quite different from what I usually cook. Using a springform pan, I turned pizza dough into small balls, topped them with tomato sauce, pepperoni, and mozzarella cheese, and baked them in the oven. The result was a pull-apart pizza bread that turned out pretty well. The only other significant activity of the day was working on my novel. I'm eager to finish this project so I can move on to something new.

Push it...

..push it real good....

May 12, 2026

Running behind........

This morning was quite unusual; I found myself starting my day a whole 90 minutes behind my planned schedule. While I did manage to claw back some of that lost time, it came at a price, which I'll delve into shortly.

As the sun rose and I began my workday, I received some exciting news: my background check for Walmart had been completed; and much to my relief, I passed! This time, it seemed like the burdensome military bureaucracy that has shadowed my life for the past four decades had finally dissipated. It's a weight off my shoulders, and now all I have to do is await the details for my orientation.

Overall, the day was fairly decent, punctuated by a varied mix of runs that kept things interesting. However, my final run took me far out to Walls, Mississippi; nearly an hour away from home. That distance was frustrating and added an extra layer of stress to my already hectic day. Nonetheless, I still managed to come close to achieving my daily goals. As the week progresses, I can definitely feel the accumulating stress, but there's a silver lining: my car is running significantly better than before.

Behind, and behind being behind....

Today stands as a vivid example of how stress can tangibly impact my daily life. As dawn broke, I found myself wrestling with the weight of exhaustion, ultimately rolling out of bed a frustrating 90 minutes late. The late start threw my entire schedule into disarray, leaving me scrambling to catch up. Skipping my cherished morning routine meant I left the house without the grounding rituals of meditation, yoga, or Tai Chi; practices that typically help me steer through the chaos of the day with clarity and calm.

In a small stroke of good fortune, I managed to remember to prepare my tuna fish for lunch. However, I was dismayed to discover that I had run out of rolls, a detail I made a mental note to address later in the evening. The day dragged on, and after a series of demanding meetings and tasks, I returned home an hour later than I had initially planned, which meant skipping my evening routine entirely.

Recently, I've committed myself to accomplish at least one productive task each evening. Tonight, that task was baking bread for work; a process that typically consumes much of my evening but is always rewarding in the end. The scent of fresh dough filled the air, and as the bread cooled on the counter, it looked beautifully golden and inviting. I took a moment to prepare my sandwich for the next morning, ensuring I wouldn't face the frantic rush of breakfast in the morning.

Regrettably, fatigue weighed heavily on me, and I realized I wouldn't be able to catch up on my neglected morning routine; a significant loss I felt keenly. Aside from the demands of work and the satisfaction of baking, today felt somewhat unproductive. However, I know that days like this are rare. I'm choosing to set it aside, readying myself for a fresh start tomorrow. With a hint of optimism, I hope to rise on time and create a day filled with the balance and mindfulness I strive for.

Turn it around...

..and then roll with it....

Pulling it out of the fire........

It was an exasperating day that seemed to stretch on without end. Despite the mundane nature of a typical Wednesday, where my rides usually only required a short two or three-mile trek, today was different. I found myself facing a daunting 10-mile journey to pick someone up, and with each passing minute leading up to 1:30 PM, my frustration mounted. Doubts crept in, and I began to feel certain that I wouldn't achieve my goal.

As I navigated the route, a new request pinged on my screen, drawing my attention to Arkansas. The pickup location was far beyond West Memphis, adding to my already mounting anxiety. But as fate would have it, that ride evolved into a round trip that surprisingly pushed me beyond my target. However, it came with a trade-off; I was left stranded about an hour outside the city, feeling a mix of triumph and disappointment; a jumble of good and bad news intertwined.

When I finally stepped through my front door, exhaustion tugged at my limbs, only to be met with an unexpected message from Walmart. They had scheduled my orientation for tomorrow morning. The news landed heavily, intensifying the pressure I felt mounting on my shoulders. Yet, amid the chaos, a flicker of determination ignited within me. I knew that if I focused, I could rally myself and tackle everything ahead with resilience.

Feeling down, but I have no idea why....

I have a sense that something unusual is in the air today. In Fraser, there was an overwhelming display of law enforcement, with over 100 officials gathered from multiple divisions. The local police mingled with state officers, the National Guard, and members of the Memphis Safe Task Force, creating an atmosphere thick with tension. The DEA was attempting to serve a warrant inside a Burger King, and chaos erupted when the suspect allegedly reached for a gun. Tragically, he found himself outmatched by the sheer number of officers present and did not survive the confrontation. There was also a high-speed chase down Winchester Road, but despite my efforts, I couldn't uncover any details about that particular incident.

Despite these events, my dark mood persists, seeming to weigh heavily upon me. It feels as if joy has vanished from the world around me, and the frustration of this realization seeps into my bones. The melancholy sneaks up silently, initially eluding my awareness until it firmly takes hold. At first, I attributed my mood to the disruption of my routine caused by poor sleep over the past few days. Yet, a nagging feeling tells me there's something deeper beneath the surface, and that thought is quite unsettling. I'm sure this is just a passing phase, a shadow that will eventually lift, but I find myself yearning for that brighter moment to arrive sooner rather than later.

On a more positive note, I still haven't heard from the neighborhood market, but I received an email confirming that my account is not active. Just before settling in for the night, I noticed a notification indicating that my orientation is set for tomorrow morning. Life has a peculiar way of moving slowly, up until it doesn't; and now I'll need to rearrange my week to make room for this unexpected development, but I'm confident I can handle it.

Since no one in the house was in the mood to cook this evening, I decided to treat myself and swung by Asian Star to order some chicken. I took the extra step to ask for it extra spicy and with additional sauce, hoping to ignite my taste buds with a delightful kick. That should give me at least two meals, though I already devoured one of them; delicious!

The Twist, the turn...

..then twist again....

May 14, 2026

A little bit........

I hit the ground running and completed a few rides on Uber before heading to Walmart for orientation. The orientation went well and only took a few hours. J scheduled me for Saturday to complete my computer-based learning and mentioned that he would prepare a schedule for me as soon as possible.

Here's a bit of foreshadowing: when I checked the Walmart app, I found the schedule was set, but it wasn't what I expected. I need to work tomorrow morning to finish the computer-based learning, and then I'm on a full shift for the next couple of days. Interestingly, I didn't see any training in the schedule. However, I'll go with the flow and see what happens.

Trying to rest - failing....

After wrapping up my shift at Walmart, I decided to squeeze in one last ride for Uber. The air was fragrant with the scent of fast food as I pulled into the Goodwill parking lot. Once inside, I wandered through the aisles lined with racks of clothes and shelves of miscellaneous items. Despite the intriguing assortment, nothing seemed to capture my attention, so, with a sense of indifference, I made my way back home.

I envisioned spending the afternoon leisurely, unwinding before diving into another full day of Uber driving, followed by my regular duties at Walmart. However, relaxation proved elusive. My thoughts were consumed by recent events that had left a sour note in the community. A tragic incident had occurred where a crossing guard was struck by a drunk driver on Kirby Whitten, resulting in a student suffering from broken arms during the horrific scene. As the sun dipped below the horizon, there was still no word on the condition of the crossing guard, leaving the community in a state of justified distress and outrage.

Determined not to let these heavy thoughts weigh me down, I crawled into bed early, hoping to rise with renewed energy and boost my numbers for the week ahead. Yet, a nagging feeling tugged at me, hinting that tomorrow might not unfold as I had envisioned. With a hint of apprehension, I closed my eyes, bracing for whatever the day might bring.

Well, isn't this interesting...

..not really, but still....

May 15, 2026

Not as planned........

Today began with an ambitious plan: I intended to hit the ground running and log at least 10 hours of ride-sharing before finally heading home for some well-deserved relaxation. I was also looking forward to preparing for my first shift at Walmart, which I thought was scheduled for tomorrow. However, upon waking up and checking my Walmart app, I was met with an unwelcome surprise. To my dismay, I found that I had been scheduled for work today instead of tomorrow, and the schedule not only overlooked all of my requests but also allocated me a full 40-hour week.

Despite the abrupt shift in my plans, I summoned my determination and made my way to Walmart. Once there, I was quickly immersed in the computer-based training that would introduce me to the company's policies and practices. The training was efficient, taking less than two hours, and it brought me right to my first break; a welcome pause after absorbing so much information.

Post-break, I transitioned into the back room where I was tasked with merchandise reconciliation. During this hands-on experience, I delved deep into understanding the reconciliation process, gaining valuable insights into how the logistics of the store operated. It was a rewarding opportunity that left me feeling more competent and confident.

After lunch, I was whisked to the front end for training. However, "training" was a loose term; what really happened was more of an on-the-job introduction. I was kindly instructed to start working at the front end, with minimal guidance provided. I took the initiative to explain my understanding of my responsibilities, and to my relief, they confirmed that I was, indeed, on the right track.

The hours that followed were spent managing the front end, overseeing transactions, and assisting customers. Though I could sense that this sudden change would likely cause some disarray in the coming week or two as everyone adjusted, I am optimistic that we will ultimately navigate through these challenges and emerge organized and efficient.

Trying to balance....

If you've been following my journey for any length of time, you know I thrive on the rhythm of routine and the comfort of predictability. Unexpected changes, like the recent shift at Walmart, send ripples through my carefully crafted plans and leave me feeling somewhat out of control. This morning, before plunging into the demands of my workday, I had completed another chapter of my novel; each sentence a labor of love; and I was keen to embrace the weekend ahead. However, the sudden alteration to my schedule disrupted those intentions like a pebble tossed into a still pond, creating unforeseen waves.

I found myself rushing out the door, barely managing to make it to work on time, all the while grappling with the nagging feeling that I'd left my morning routine in disarray. It's become increasingly clear that I need to re-establish that grounding practice; this week has wreaked havoc on my sense of equilibrium. My yoga sessions, tai chi practice, moments of meditation, and even my physical workouts have all fallen by the wayside. While skipping one of these activities might not seem catastrophic, the accumulation of their absence is profoundly unsettling. My next opportunity to reclaim that routine seems to hover just out of reach, likely waiting for my next day off, which, alas, won't arrive until Monday. To complicate matters further, the reduction in rideshare opportunities means I'll be scrambling to supplement my income, which likely adds another layer of stress to an already fraught week.

When I finally stepped through my front door in the afternoon, a wave of exhaustion washed over me, the kind that comes from standing on my feet for hours; a feeling I'm not accustomed to. It will take time to acclimate to these long shifts. After a brief period of settling in, I sank into the comfort of my couch and decided to escape into the world of cinema with "Jaws," a classic from the 1970s that never fails to hold my attention. As the suspense unfolded on the screen, I also took the time to jot down my thoughts in my journals, an exercise that helps me clarify my mind amidst the chaos. Here I am, already at the midpoint of the month and barreling toward the halfway mark of the year. Time seems to slip through my fingers like sand, and I find myself yearning for a way to pause, to savor the moments instead of racing through them.

nope, that is not going to work...

..I have to try something else.....

May 16, 2026

Uber then Walmart - nope........

I'm currently navigating the complexities of balancing my job at Walmart with rideshare driving, and I've been conducting a little experiment to find the right rhythm. Today, I decided to try an approach where I completed a few hours of Uber driving in the morning, returned home for a brief one-hour nap, and then headed to Walmart for my full 8-hour shift. Unfortunately, this plan did not unfold as I had envisioned.

To start with, I noticed that the demand for rideshare services in the morning has taken quite a hit; it seems that most people are opting to use these services later in the day, especially during the evening rush. I'll delve more into this change in demand later. Despite my effort to recharge with a short nap, I discovered that I was struggling to keep my eyes open midway through my shift at Walmart. It became painfully clear that this strategy isn't sustainable.

Now, I am reconsidering my game plan. I'm leaning towards flipping my schedule; working my shift at Walmart first and then dedicating some time to rideshare driving afterward. I've begun to observe the surge pricing patterns around midnight, and it looks promising; the incentives for driving during those hours seem to be quite substantial. I have Monday and Tuesday off this week, and during that time, I plan to monitor the surge pricing on both Uber and Lyft each time I finish a shift. If I identify some favorable surge opportunities, I'll leverage that information to make informed decisions about my driving schedule moving forward.

Now, this is tired....

My morning routine unfolded seamlessly, each task flowing into the next with a comforting familiarity. Afterward, I ventured out for a few hours of Uber driving, navigating the bustling city streets. The vibrant energy around me was invigorating, but it left me yearning for a moment of rest. I returned home, hoping for a rejuvenating nap, but unfortunately, it didn't turn out as restful as I had envisioned.

Despite this setback, I checked off my daily tasks, although I regrettably skipped my exercise. I couldn't shake the feeling that spending nine hours on my feet would pose its own challenges. I know that adapting to this new routine will require time and patience, but I am steadfast in my determination to meet my step goal for the day.

When I finally settled down at home in the evening, I sank into my chair, allowing myself to unwind and reflect on the day's events. It dawned on me that this period of transition might be more complex than I anticipated, but I am committed to embracing the process.

A plan develops...

..is it good or bad?.....

May 17, 2026

Now, that is tiring........

Today proved to be quite an intriguing experience. Being a Sunday, Walmart was facing a staffing shortage, which made the front end resemble a ghost town more than the bustling hub it's usually known for. From the perspective of an employee, the day felt oddly quiet, yet there was an underlying tension as I struggled to address the various frustrations that customers expressed. My role was somewhat limited, and instead of being able to resolve their issues, I found myself primarily guiding customers to the items they needed or retrieving security keys to unlock the numerous display cases cluttered around the store.

As the sun dipped lower in the sky, painting the horizon in vibrant hues of orange and pink, one of the managers called for an all-hands meeting in the parking lot to coordinate the effort of pushing carts back to their designated spots. To my surprise, only two of us answered the call. My partner skillfully maneuvered one of the motorized carts and a handful of push carts while I took on a more ambitious challenge, managing to move around 120 carts in total. At this moment, I found myself observing the dynamics at play, noting the significant issues that loomed over the workplace. However, being relatively new to the environment, I felt it prudent to hold back my thoughts and simply absorb everything around me.

By the time I clocked out at 10:00 PM, exhaustion weighed heavily on my body, yet my mind buzzed with alertness, presenting a curious contradiction. I took a moment to reflect on how I felt: physically drained from the day's labor, yet mentally sharp. After finishing my shift, I checked the heat maps for rideshare apps, and as had become a pattern over the last several days, everything appeared to be in surge pricing. After getting some much-needed rest and recovery, I formulated a plan to manage my time effectively; working 40 hours a week at Walmart while also dedicating 20 hours to rideshare driving, broken into 4-hour shifts each day, while preserving my two days off for recuperation. One of those off days, I aimed to drive for Lyft as an additional source of income. It's a plan I'm ready to put into action.

The final days, time to plan....

Today marked the culmination of my workweek, and I'm now looking forward to two days of much-needed respite. My initial thought was to dedicate at least one of those days to running rideshare shifts, but, regrettably, that plan will need to be set aside for the time being. My schedule is packed with responsibilities that demand my immediate attention, and I realize I must take a step back to organize my priorities and carve out a clear strategy for moving forward.

Fortunately, Laura has stepped in to lighten my load by tackling two significant tasks that had been weighing heavily on my mind: she graciously mowed the front yard and took care of the pool. With those chores now off my plate, I feel a sense of relief and can redirect my focus towards other pressing matters.

At this moment, I find myself with a rudimentary plan in place, but fatigue has kept me from expanding it into a more thorough and actionable outline. Nevertheless, I'm hopeful that with a bit of luck, I can hit the ground running tomorrow; even if my muscles challenge me for doing so. I'm confident that once I adjust to the physical demands ahead, establishing a routine will become second nature. For now, I've had to set my exercise regimen on pause until I can make this transition smoothly. A quick glance at my weekly schedule reassures me that everything is accounted for and in order at this point.

Embarking on this journey should prove to be fascinating, and I have complete faith in my ability to rise above the hurdles that lie ahead. While I've made a conscious effort to steer clear of political commentary in this blog lately, I feel compelled to make a brief observation: the delusional beliefs proliferating among right-wing factions are increasingly alarming. Their relentless quest to dismantle progress in order to appease and glorify our current leader is troubling. The reality is that people are genuinely struggling; this is not an exaggeration. Many are grappling to make ends meet, and with gas prices soaring as a result of an unjust war, the wealth gap widens, leaving poorer families to face hunger.

I've been absorbing various commentary pieces on this topic, and the extent of our political polarization is quite disheartening. Even those who have previously focused on promoting positivity are showing signs of rising frustration. With just a year and a half until the next election, I find myself pondering how this situation will evolve. I usually have a relatively clear sense of where things might lead, but with the midterms approaching, the right is working fervently to suppress the aspirations of the left. Both sides seem to be resorting to dishonest tactics, which only fosters a sense of shame regarding our country's current state. It's a deeply saddening reality we find ourselves in.

There is a time to rest...

..that time is now.....

May 18, 2026

Sit on butt work........

Today was spent in a steady rhythm at my desk, immersed in a sea of schedules, timelines, and financial spreadsheets, all while mapping out the path ahead. As I sifted through my overflowing inbox, I was greeted by a barrage of 127 responses to my recent job applications. A quick tally revealed that 104 of those were rejections, a familiar sting, while the remaining 23 offered a glimmer of hope in the form of job offers. It's true what they say; when it rains, it pours.

While the offers themselves were not particularly thrilling, I found a sense of satisfaction in my current role. The primary factor guiding my decision was the stark reality that over half of those opportunities were for over-the-road driving positions, a lifestyle I'm not keen on adopting. The rest were temporary gigs ranging from two weeks to a couple of months, all offering comparable pay rates. Given the circumstances, I felt reassured that I had made the right choice in staying put.

To keep everything organized and on track, I dedicated some time to updating my spreadsheet and calendar, meticulously mapping out my upcoming shifts for the weeks ahead. It's all about staying prepared and focused on what lies ahead.

R and R....

I've finally reached a point where I genuinely need some time for rest and recuperation. The last few days have kept me on my feet, and the toll it took on my body has become painfully clear—I definitely need to get back in shape. This morning, as I slowly opened my eyes, a wave of exhaustion washed over me. Every muscle in my arms and legs ached as if they were protesting the demands I had placed on them. Recognizing the signals my body was sending, I decided to take a step back and allow myself a day of relaxation to aid my recovery.

Throughout the day, I focused on gentle stretching exercises, hoping to loosen the tightness in my muscles and restore some flexibility. In the midst of my recovery, I also used this quiet day to organize my thoughts and prep for the week ahead. I sifted through a mountain of information, meticulously clearing out a backlog of information that had been weighing on my mind.

With a touch of optimism, I'm hoping to feel rejuvenated by morning so I can dive into my weekly to-do list with renewed energy. One of the first things I plan to do is experiment with a new recipe for rolls—I'm eager to see how they turn out. To help facilitate this, I pushed myself to stay awake until around 11:00 PM, aiming to reset my sleep schedule in preparation for the demands of the upcoming week, including shifts at Walmart and driving for Uber. Here's to a promising and productive tomorrow!

Not as planned...

..but it will work.....

May 19, 2026

Prep day........

I spent the day preparing for the upcoming week. I started my morning at Walmart, where I picked up the ingredients I needed for sandwiches. I tried a new recipe for the rolls, and I was pleased with how well they turned out. I checked my Walmart pay and my Uber pay, and everything came through as expected. I feel ready for whatever this week may bring.

Nothing ever goes as planned....

I woke up feeling groggy and unrested, my mind still swirling with the lingering remnants of vividly strange dreams. What struck me most was the almost surreal quality of the dream world; a rich tapestry of colors danced before my eyes, and tantalizing scents wafted through the air, an experience unlike anything I had felt in my waking life. Though I had intended to sleep a little longer, I found myself rising early, filled with a sudden resolve to tackle the day ahead.

After a quick breakfast, I placed my doughy rolls in a warm spot to rise, their gentle expansion a satisfying promise of what was to come. With the bread on its path to perfection, I hurriedly set out to run my errands. The early morning air was fresh and invigorating as I gathered supplies for the week, each item a small reassurance that I was ticking off my to-do list.

Once back home, I turned my attention to my next task: mowing the backyard. However, my plans quickly hit a snag when I realized the mower's battery was as dead as a doornail. While I impatiently waited for it to charge, I decided to make use of the time by tending to my fire pit. I had already stacked a good amount of wood, but the dampness from recent rains threatened my plans for a roaring fire. A dash of gasoline ignited a moment of boldness, and as the flames flickered to life, I found myself dodging the heat, narrowly avoiding a singed eyebrow; definitely a reminder to exercise caution in moments of enthusiasm.

With the battery charged and ready to go, I finally mowed half the yard, the rhythmic hum of the mower providing a sense of accomplishment. I also tackled some weed whacking, both in the front and backyards, transforming the overgrown patches into manageable green spaces. By the time I finished, my muscles ached with exhaustion, a testament to a productive day.

I couldn't help but feel a little adventurous, so I whipped up two hearty sandwiches for lunch over the next couple of days. And on a whim, I decided to try my hand at crafting a homemade pizza, the warm dough and melting cheese calling out to my culinary spirit.

As I planned my evening, I made a decision to go to bed early, ideally between 9:00 PM and 10:00 PM. This timeframe would allow me to complete my morning routine leisurely and even sneak in a nap before heading to Walmart later that afternoon. After my Walmart adventure, I plan to hit the road with Uber, curious to see how that would unfold.

To wrap up the day, I chose to unwind with two movies I had never seen before: "Thunderbolts," part of the Marvel universe, and "John Carter." The adventure in "John Carter" captured my interest, even if its storyline felt somewhat predictable. All in all, I'm chalking today up as a success, and I'm eager to embrace whatever the week has in store for me.

Well well well...

..isn't that a deep subject.....

May 20, 2026

First day of double duty........

I am gradually finding my footing in my new role at Walmart, and I'm beginning to feel a sense of control as I adapt to the demands of my position. Despite the absence of formal training, I'm navigating my responsibilities by discovering effective strategies and solutions as I progress. This approach allows me to infuse my own personality into my work. I'm making a concerted effort to be visible on the floor, ensuring that my presence is felt and that I'm engaged with both customers and colleagues. While my assertiveness may unsettle some, I believe they will grow accustomed to my style over time.

As part of my duties, I serve as a Sentinel stationed at the end of the checkout aisles, but I also make it a point to walk around and keep an eye on the front end and the aisles. You'd be amazed at how quickly products can end up in the wrong place. I actively assist customers by opening security cases when they request access to certain items, guiding them to find what they need, and maintaining a friendly and approachable demeanor throughout. Overall, my experience has been enjoyable, although I do feel the strain on my feet after hours on my feet.

Once my shift at Walmart wrapped up, I decided to explore a side gig with Uber for some early morning rides. Just as I had anticipated, I logged in during a surge period, which meant increased fares. After successfully completing a few rides, I received a larger request: a nearly 100-mile trip to Paragould, AR. When I arrived to pick up my three passengers, I learned that they had been waiting for hours for a driver willing to undertake such a lengthy drive. With rising fuel prices, it was no surprise that many drivers hesitated.

The round trip lasted close to three hours, marking the conclusion of my shift. While it was a solid start to my Uber experience, I don't plan on making such a long drive again in the near future. After working nine hours at Walmart, I was feeling quite fatigued. Nonetheless, I'm optimistic about the week ahead and excited for the opportunities it may bring. I'm also looking forward to utilizing the first part of my time off early next week to save some extra cash for something special I have in mind.

Isn't this fun?....

As I focus solely on today, I can't shake the strong sensation that my personal life is on the brink of a significant transformation. The morning began with me tackling my usual list of tasks, and to my surprise, I zipped through them with remarkable efficiency. However, as the workday unfolded, I quickly realized that it siphoned away most of my personal time, leaving me with little room to breathe.

If I keep up this relentless pace, I anticipate that my weekdays will soon feel like a blur, stretching out five days in a row without respite. To counterbalance this, I intend to reserve the sixth day as a dedicated time for enhancing my personal finances, hoping that this new strategy will bring about some positive changes.

Tomorrow, when I return home earlier than usual; trust me, I'm aware of how this may sound; I plan to make a beeline for my bed. I won't indulge in my nightly cartoon rituals; the moment I lay down, I expect to drift off into a deep sleep almost immediately. While this shift may require some significant adjustment, I recognize the necessity to manage my time more effectively from here on out.

Into the void...

..let it come.....

May 21, 2026

Things are becoming status quo.........

I think I finally have things organized in a manageable way. Walmart was relatively uneventful, with only a few minor disturbances. There was a visit from an unnamed executive who wandered around the store for three hours with the higher-ups. She addressed me briefly and seemed satisfied with my responses, which I appreciate.

We also had a lost boy in the store for about three hours. We couldn't figure out what happened to him. He was supposed to be waiting for his parents while they finished shopping, but there were no adults who matched his description in the store. Nobody saw him leave, and we could not locate him. Fortunately, there was a minor security issue, but it was handled quickly and efficiently. All things considered, we'll call it a good day.

On the other hand, my experience with Uber was frustrating. When I clocked out of Walmart at 10:00 PM and signed in to Uber, I found myself in a dead zone. I checked the heat map and moved towards the downtown area, which had turned cold by the time I got there. I spent about two and a half hours trying to find rides but couldn't seem to get into a rhythm. Historically, Thursday nights have been challenging for Uber, and I need to remember that in the coming weeks. Hopefully, things will improve tomorrow.

Into routine....

This morning, I found myself pressed for time, which left me scrambling to complete my usual routine before heading off to work. As a result, I was unable to check off every task on my to-do list; a few minor things slipped through the cracks, but thankfully, nothing critical. When I finally returned home after a long day and a couple of shifts, I managed to finish the remaining tasks that had been left undone and was able to realign myself with my daily goals.

As I reflect on this week, now that we're at the midpoint, I can clearly see how my full routine is shaping up. My workdays stretch across a grueling 14 hours, split between my commitments at Walmart and driving for Uber. This demanding schedule means that during the week, I have very little time to focus on personal errands or tasks that need my attention. I know I will need to make up for this on my two days off, where I can finally breathe a little and catch up.

However, with my new shifts and work commitments come some increasingly frustrating consequences. I'm becoming acutely aware that my physical state is undergoing a noticeable change, something I will need to confront before it escalates further. Despite feeling an overwhelming sense of fatigue, I also experience a peculiar surge of energy; though it tends to be concentrated in areas that are less than beneficial to my overall well-being. I recognize that I have to address this issue, but I've decided it will have to wait until I navigate through the challenges of this week.

Stabilization...

..The is it, right?.....

May 22, 2026

Into the swing of things.........

After much trial and effort, I'm pleased to say that I've finally crafted a new work routine that feels effective. Today, I arrived at the office punctually, stepping into my role with a sense of purpose that filled the air with determination. I settled into my position and diligently tackled my responsibilities as they came.

A notable addition to my day-to-day is the body camera I now wear, which acts as a vital security measure, reinforcing a sense of safety and accountability as I carry out my duties.

Recently, I received some intriguing news: my role is set to evolve. I'll soon have access to the registers, providing me the autonomy to determine both the frequency and extent of their use. Still, my primary focus remains sharp, monitoring the premises and intervening swiftly in cases of theft. It's important that I maintain my vigilance and not get sidetracked by the fascinating scenarios that sometimes unfold at the front end, regardless of their allure.

Further adding to the excitement, I've been informed that I will undergo certification as an asset protection worker. While the specifics of this certification remain a bit of a mystery to me, the prospect is undeniably encouraging. Though the shift was lengthy, it proved to be incredibly productive, leaving me with a sense of accomplishment as I ended the day.

Snips and snails....

With my current work hours at Walmart, I've found myself needing to streamline certain aspects of my daily routine. I've had to compress my meditation sessions and other grounding activities, but there's a growing sense of hope that I will discover a more harmonious rhythm soon. I'm in the process of crafting a morning routine that enables me to juggle all my responsibilities while still fostering a sense of control over my day. During my breaks, I've started squeezing in a mini meditation, which surprisingly feels quite beneficial amidst the hustle and bustle of the store.

My legs and feet continue to cause me some discomfort, yet there are signs of improvement. On another front, my sleep has become somewhat elusive. It's not that I lack adequate rest; rather, my mind races with thoughts, causing my dreams to be rather tumultuous. I suspect these vivid dreams stem from recent lifestyle changes; reducing my caffeine and water intake, cutting back on my meditation time, and tweaking some of my daily habits. While some areas of my life, which I typically manage well, are currently feeling a bit out of control, I hold onto the belief that they will eventually find their balance again, even if they feel unsettling at this moment.

In a surprising twist, while I was working at Walmart one day, a woman unexpectedly dashed toward me and enveloped me in a hug. At first, I found it endearing, but as the embrace stretched on, a feeling of discomfort crept in until I recognized her as Sheila from US Xpress. We spent some time catching up, and she filled me in on what's transpired since I left. I couldn't help but chuckle at the amusing irony she shared; Mark had apparently been terrified I would seek revenge on him after he fired me. Given his imposing stature and my more easygoing nature, I found the notion utterly hilarious.

We exchanged numbers and tentatively planned to grab lunch one of these days, although I remain skeptical that it will come to fruition. After a long day, I finally returned home around midnight, bringing my day to a close.

One notable highlight from today was when Rowan shared the exciting news with Laura that he and Natsumi are now engaged! From what I've gathered, their engagement was blissfully casual. I wish them both the very best in this new chapter of their lives and promise to keep my loyal followers updated as their story unfolds.

Simple days...

..with simple things.....

When easy and hard combine.........

Over the past two years, I have relished the freedom that comes from working independently. The absence of a clock to punch has allowed me the luxury of crafting my own schedule, affording me the choice of when, and even whether, to put in a day's work. Fortuitously, I am naturally inclined towards self-regulation, enabling me to remain disciplined and motivated. As a result, I've devoted myself to an intense work ethic, and the fruits of that labor have been abundantly rewarding.

However, since I took on my role at Walmart just two weeks ago, I have found myself operating within a structure defined by others. Today was particularly challenging, as I woke up feeling a wave of negativity that I hadn't experienced before. As I reluctantly dragged myself out of bed, I felt an internal struggle against the inevitable responsibilities of the day, as though I were fighting against an unseen clock that urged me to hurry. Thankfully, Laura, a kind colleague, stepped in to help. She took the time to prepare my sandwich, a small but significant gesture that reignited my motivation to confront the tasks waiting for me at Walmart.

In my position as an asset protection agent, I primarily stand in a designated area measuring approximately 20 feet by 20 feet. This designated zone allows me to be highly effective in my duties, and as the days go by, I have become increasingly proficient. Thus far, I have successfully intervened in 37 instances where customers, often unknowingly, overlooked items they hadn't scanned at checkout; things like refreshing bottles of water, tempting bags of potato chips, heavy bags of charcoal, and bubbly sodas creatively stashed beneath their carts. When I approach these situations, I do so with a spirit of understanding rather than accusation. My goal is to assist customers in recognizing their honest mistakes, and most respond positively without resistance, appreciating the guidance to do the right thing.

Having made similar errors in the past, I empathize deeply with the customers, which makes my interventions feel natural rather than confrontational. In addition to my main responsibilities, I have also made it a point to lend a hand to the cashiers during peak hours, completing minor tasks that help lighten their load. Today, I encountered a small hiccup when I tried to log into the register to provide additional support but was met with an error; my login credentials didn't work, which I'll need to resolve with management soon. I've made it abundantly clear to the front-end staff that my role is strictly supportive; I am not looking to take over their tasks but rather to offer assistance when the rush gets overwhelming.

I pushed through my entire shift, and while my legs and feet were aching by the end, the soreness felt manageable compared to what I experienced last week. After my shift concluded, I shifted gears and drove for Uber for about two hours, although the experience turned out to be quite uneventful, with no significant rides or noteworthy interactions. On my way back home, I decided to stop at Murphy's to refuel my car. However, I encountered an unexpected setback; the gas pumps were uncooperative, much to my frustration. In a twist of fate, when I approached the convenience store operator for assistance, I discovered she had drifted off to sleep behind the counter. It seems, unfortunately, that I'll have to prioritize filling up in the morning instead, a reminder that sometimes, the simplest plans can meet the most unexpected obstacles.

The wheel is turning....

Today was a whirlwind, leaving me with little to share about my personal experiences. I dove into a flurry of tasks this morning, each one pulling me in different directions. Despite the chaos, I made a conscious effort to carve out some time for myself. I took a moment to delve into the next chapter of the novel I'm working on, thoughtfully pre-reading it to prepare for the editing process ahead.

Looking at the upcoming two days off, I find myself without a solid plan, but I'm hopeful that a clearer idea will emerge before Monday rolls around. For now, I'm focusing on navigating the challenges in front of me, determined to keep progressing and find my path forward amidst the busyness.

A little slice of hell...

..or something like that.....

May 24, 2026

Mounting pressure.........

I've reiterated this sentiment countless times, but it's worth stating again: nothing ever unfolds quite as we envision, and today was a prime example of that reality. As I made my way through the bustling neighborhood market, I soon noticed some considerable issues that were brewing beneath the surface. I'm acutely aware of my skill set and my capacity to adapt, but the pace at which changes are occurring feels dizzying. My main duty involves overseeing the front end of the store, always alert to any signs of potential theft.

After a brief conversation with my supervisor, who observed the growing chaos, we agreed that I could take on some additional responsibilities to assist at the front end during peak hours. This decision marked the beginning of what would turn into a rather chaotic day.

To my surprise, I was granted access to the login systems for both the self-checkout lanes and the traditional cash registers. This newfound access allowed me to broaden my role and provide even more support to the customers. However, there was one catch: I hadn't undergone any formal training for these tasks. Determined to rise to the occasion, I took it upon myself to seek out training, learning the ins and outs as I went along, piece by piece.

Amidst the whirlwind of activity, I encountered a particularly appreciative customer who recognized my efforts. He requested to speak with a manager to express his gratitude for my assistance. His commendation was so noteworthy that it reached one of the operations managers, leading to an expansion of my access on the front end to nearly everything. This sudden increase in responsibility transformed my day into a flurry of movement as I darted between various stations to address the multitude of small issues that arose.

However, the day wasn't without its challenges. One interaction stood out as particularly difficult. A customer, clearly bewildered by the self-checkout process, called for help after we had already completed his requests. Although the misstep lay with him, I refrained from pointing that out, recognizing that it would only incite further frustration. Despite his discontent, I managed to stay composed and calmly diffuse the situation before it escalated further.

By the time my shift finally came to an end, I had not only fulfilled my original responsibilities but had also taken on the roles of a self-checkout monitor and a customer service representative. It had been an exhausting day, filled with constant movement and problem-solving.

Once I clocked out and stepped into the evening air, I eagerly activated my Uber beacon, hoping to make up for the long day. Unfortunately, disappointment awaited me; I faced a string of three back-to-back cancellations and then found myself driving aimlessly around the city without receiving a single ride request. The hour slipped away, draining both my patience and fuel reserves.

Now that the week has drawn to a close, I feel a sense of relief wash over me as I prepare to embrace a bit of well-deserved rest. I might consider logging a few hours with Lyft over the next few days, but I'll take it as it comes.

Done done done....

I woke up late, the soft morning light drifting through my curtains like a gentle nudge, but even that couldn't inspire me to leave the cozy warmth of my bed. After a moment of hesitation, I summoned the motivation to face my responsibilities and finally pushed myself to get moving. With a determined effort, I left the house 15 minutes earlier than usual, hoping to complete a quick errand for gas. However, my plans quickly unraveled into a frustrating experience.

As I pulled into the local Murphy's gas station, I encountered a series of annoying setbacks. The pump stubbornly rejected certain types of payments, leaving me fidgeting with my wallet in irritation. After 15 agonizing minutes of trial and error, I finally resorted to a different payment method, and with a sigh of relief, I filled up the tank. Yet, despite my efforts, I was now running three minutes late.

Arriving at the store right on schedule calmed me momentarily, but that was the peak of my productive morning. Once the workday commenced, I found myself overwhelmed and struggled to make even a dent in my task list before the clock struck the hour. After a long day filled with mounting pressures, I attempted to earn some extra cash through Uber, but that effort fell flat. Defeated, I finally headed home, longing for a relaxing evening to unwind and recharge in anticipation of my upcoming two-day sabbatical. Unfortunately, that moment of peace remained frustratingly elusive.

Down and down we go...

..Fun times, but not on the go.....

May 25, 2026

I love the easy days.........

Today, my work primarily involved bookkeeping. I also did some planning for the upcoming week, but aside from that, it was a quiet day. It felt good to have a low-key day at work. I'm starting to adjust to my new job, but I'm uncertain about my overall happiness with it. I believe things will improve once I get settled in, but there are significant challenges, and I'm unsure about what the future holds.

No drive and tired....

Last night was another restless one, with sleep eluding me and negative dreams haunting my mind. This unsettling trend seems to be settling in as my new normal, and it's a feeling I find hard to accept. I had intended to get out and drive for Lyft, eager to make the most of the day, but my exhaustion from the night's turmoil held me back.

Nevertheless, I found a burst of energy and managed to whip up a bacon bomb before the day slipped away; an impressive little creation that turned out quite delicious. Later in the evening, I turned my attention to my novel, and I'm thrilled to say I'm nearing the finish line of that long-standing project.

Today has become a much-needed opportunity to reset my mind and refocus my goals. I'm holding onto the hope that tomorrow will bring a surge of productivity and a brighter outlook.

What? A day?...

..Punctuation is everything.....

Personal business.........

Today, my entire focus was devoted to my personal business endeavors. With no pressing tasks from Walmart or rideshare services to distract me, I seized the opportunity to immerse myself completely in the world of my novel. I am excited to report that I have only 80 pages remaining to proofread, and then I'll be ready to embark on the journey of publication. The process has been long and often challenging, but at long last, I can see the light at the end of the tunnel; and thankfully, it's not an oncoming train! The prospect of sharing my story with the world fills me with anticipation and joy.

Wasted day? Perhaps....

As I embraced my second consecutive day off, I found myself at a crossroads between adventure and tranquility, ultimately choosing the latter. The dreary rain drummed softly against the garage door, a gentle reminder of the cozy indoor world waiting for me. While there were countless tasks I could have tackled; perhaps decluttering the garage or organizing the overflowing files; I opted instead for the solace of creativity. I sank into my favorite chair, my twin screens beacons in the darkness, and poured my thoughts into the pages of my novel, gradually clearing the clutter from my mind and my to-do list. With a sense of accomplishment, I got everything up to date, eager to turn the page to a fresh start.

Amid the steady patter of rain, I carved out precious moments with my family, sharing some time set aside. I also lost myself in crafting new Spotify playlists, a rare activity that got me moving, if only to my desk. However, beneath this veneer of productivity lay a tumult of emotions; I had been feeling more moody lately, an unsettling weight that made everything seem a tad more challenging. The usual rituals that once brought me comfort no longer did the trick, and the result was restless nights that left me drained and irritable.

Knowing I have to return to work tomorrow, I made a deliberate choice as night drew near: I would release the frenetic energy buzzing within my mind. This digital detox was a rare indulgence for me, as I was aware that ignoring my thoughts could lead to more significant issues down the road. Yet today felt like a well-earned break. As I settled into bed, I consciously let go of all lingering thoughts, refusing to feed any anxiety that Morpheus might conjure. And lo and behold, it worked. Although today may have seemed like a quiet day of inconsequence, I felt a glimmer of hope that the days ahead would be brighter.

Back at it...

..Gods help me.....

May 27, 2026

Power? Me?.........

I'm back at work juggling my responsibilities at both Walmart and Uber. Interestingly, there have been some developments at Walmart that caught me off guard; it seems some coworkers believe I'm in charge. I'm honestly puzzled by this misconception and have tried to clarify my position, but the confusion persists, with colleagues treating me as if I'm part of management.

During my shift, I teamed up with Gabby, and together we transformed the front end into a finely tuned operation. We encountered a few minor hiccups along the way; about two dozen under-cart mistakes; but we managed to resolve each one efficiently. I also dealt with two customers who almost walked out without fully paying their bills, mistakenly believing it was an error on our part. Thankfully, we quickly resolved that situation as well. All in all, I feel like I'm contributing positively.

On a personal note, my legs are feeling much better compared to last week, which is a relief. However, unless there's a change in scheduling, I'm facing a six-day workweek instead of the usual five. After wrapping up my shift at Walmart, I transitioned to driving for Uber. I only picked up two rides during that time. Although the fare was decent, both rides had stops that turned into longer visits than expected, which ultimately slashed my earnings down to about $10.00 an hour. It was a bit disheartening, but I'm choosing to view it as a one-off event and am hopeful for better results tomorrow.

A good start....

The beginning of my work week has unfolded with a refreshing sense of vitality, largely due to the restorative powers of a deep REM sleep. I've been diligently focusing on achieving that elusive state of slumber where dreams swirl into the background, but I'm acutely aware that this tranquility comes with its own set of consequences. While I initially embrace the stillness, my dreams have recently transformed into exhausting odysseys; vivid yet draining journeys that I don't feel ready to unpack at this moment.

I awakened today, invigorated and brimming with energy, ready to tackle the multitude of daily tasks that awaited me. The sense of accomplishment washed over me as I navigated through my responsibilities, both physical and mental, with ease. Once those duties were fulfilled, I eagerly turned my attention to my novel. Immersed in my work, I meticulously proofread another chapter, my red pen poised to correct a continuity mistake that had been nagging at my mind. It felt satisfying to refine my writing, breathing life into the characters and plot with each correction.

As I set the pen down and put my notes to the side, signaling the completion of that section, I shifted gears, preparing myself for the demands of my job. This transition marked the conclusion of my personal creative endeavors for the day, and though I reluctantly left behind my literary world, I carried with me the warmth of productivity and creativity into the professional realm.

Darkness falls...

..Where is the light?.....

May 28, 2026

Okay, what is with the wasteland?.........

I'm finding it increasingly difficult to cope with the current situation at work. Much of the day felt like I was navigating a barren landscape, especially at the front end of the store, which seemed devoid of adequate workforce support. While the front-end staff were diligently tending to their duties, there was a striking absence of support at the two customer service points and the main office. It's hard to pinpoint exactly what's happening, but I'm trying to keep an objective perspective. The overall operation appeared disorganized and inefficient. Whenever a significant issue arose, it felt like embarking on a frustrating treasure hunt, searching for someone who could provide assistance.

Throughout my shifts to date, I've documented 61 customer interactions involving individuals who forgot to scan their items. Today, I faced two direct incidents that seemed more like attempts at theft. Lacking a proper support system, I had no choice but to address these situations myself, adhering to standard operating procedures. Although I recognize that some encounters could have stemmed from honest mistakes, the circumstances were still tense.

The first incident unfolded when a woman discreetly attempted to conceal two expensive racks of ribs at the bottom of her shopping cart. Upon noticing, I pointed them out to her, and with a look of embarrassment, she admitted that she couldn't afford them, promptly handing the ribs back to me.

The second incident was even more convoluted. A customer used a large bag of dog food to mask an entire stack of pharmaceuticals. It took three separate interactions to ensure that everything was properly scanned and accounted for. In the end, I consulted with our in-house police officer just to double-check the situation, finding some solace in having a safeguard in place.

To add to the stress, I spent three hours working with Uber, completing four rides that netted me $35. Combined with the $35 I earned yesterday, it sounds decent on paper. However, after factoring in gas expenses, my earnings translate to a meager $7.50 an hour. I can attribute this experience to two consecutive rough days, but if this trend persists, it will become unmanageable.

And just when I thought things couldn't get worse, my car started making an unsettling noise from the rear end. I need to have it checked out, but unfortunately, I can't do anything until my next day off, which isn't until next Tuesday. All of this is weighing heavily on me, and I can't shake the feeling of stress that's creeping in.

A dark place....

Today, I find myself enveloped in a thick fog of melodrama, feeling as if the very weight of the world is resting heavily on my shoulders. It's as if I'm bearing the burdens of countless souls, and while a part of me wishes to believe that this is some grand cosmic test crafted by celestial beings, I can't help but think otherwise. Instead, I interpret this tumult as a chain of unfortunate events that nudges me to adapt and evolve.

To the broader world, I wear a mask of enthusiasm for my new job, presenting it as a beacon of opportunity. Yet beneath that facade, I view it merely as a transient stepping stone, a temporary way station on my journey. Patience is a virtue I strive to master, but the pangs of impatience gnaw at me. I have the potential to bolster my income with Uber, but only if the tide of rides begins to rise, transforming into a steady stream of opportunities. Regrettably, these past two days have been marred by dismal earnings, a frustrating roadblock to my aspirations. I know that brighter days lie ahead, but the struggle against my own impatience is a formidable foe.

It feels as though I'm teetering on the precarious edge of a scale, tipping perilously close to an abyss of uncertainty. In this tumultuous space, I find myself increasingly aware of the insidious nature of darkness; it can seep into lives uninvited, often without a whisper of warning. Thankfully, in a bid to reclaim my equilibrium, I have returned to the calming embrace of meditation, a refuge where I can ground myself amidst the chaos. I can sense the shadows inching closer, encroaching on my peace, yet I recognize that by bringing them into the light of awareness, I can illuminate their hold over me.

Thus, we circle back to the relentless passage of time. The great wheel of life continues its ceaseless rotation, and my greatest challenge lies in avoiding the crushing weight that threatens to descend during its lowest points. I'm also diligently working on my novel, feeling the nearing end on the horizon. There are both small and large projects in various stages of progress, and I am committed to pushing forward, tracking the momentum of my endeavors. Will everything unfold in my favor? Only time possesses the answer to that question.

Traverse the darkness...

..to reach the light?.....

Feast and famine.........

Yesterday, I couldn't shake the feeling that the front end of the store resembled a desolate wasteland, especially when it came to the lack of management presence to address any issues that arose. It seemed like I was sending an unspoken request out to the universe, and today, it responded in a big way. Upon my arrival at Walmart, I was greeted by the sight of several higher-ups congregating in the security office, their serious discussions flooded with an aura of authority. Among them were some executives and the general manager, signaling a significant shift in the store's atmosphere.

Throughout the day, until the sun dipped below the horizon, management was everywhere, actively walking around and keeping a watchful eye on the front end, which was a refreshing change. I even received unexpected praise from one of the executives—the head of marketing and asset protection for the area; who mentioned he had heard wonderful things about my work. Additionally, I was called in for my very first weekly review, and I walked out with a sense of pride, as my direct supervisor had no critiques to offer, a reassuring sign that I am on the right track.

By the end of my shift, my legs throbbed with soreness from standing for an extended period, and I couldn't shake the concerns about my car, which had started to emit a troubling rattle from the rear. Nevertheless, I logged into Uber, hoping for some requests to come through. After waiting for 15 long minutes in Hickory Hill without a single ping from the app, I decided to take the scenic route back home, still without any ride requests to speak of.

Earlier in the day, I had a conversation with a fellow Uber driver, a seasoned pro I've crossed paths with a few times since moving here. He resides just across the street from the store, and we've shared our experiences occasionally. However, he was currently off the road, a casualty of the recent hiring spree from Uber and Lyft. This trend typically happens once a month, but they had kicked it off a couple of days earlier this time around. This surge is likely a reaction to many drivers leaving the platform due to soaring fuel prices, and the companies are rushing to replenish their driver pools. Unfortunately, this influx of new drivers has led to a saturated market, making it increasingly challenging for diligent drivers like myself to secure rides.

Despite the current chaos, I remain optimistic that the situation will stabilize soon, as many of the newcomers will likely exit within a week. Thankfully, I have the safety net of my hourly job to fall back on.

Getting closer....

Despite the lack of Uber, work still occupies a substantial part of my day, which limits my ability to pursue my personal goals. Nevertheless, I managed to finish another chapter of my novel this morning, and I am getting very close to the end. I have about six or seven chapters left to complete. Once I finish the final proofing, the novel will be ready for publication. Now, I need to figure out how to go about that. This is my primary focus during my personal time right now. My secondary focus is on reorganizing my office area to make it more functional. I have a few ideas in mind, but they are still in the early stages of development.

Pushing to the end...

..sort of.....

May 30, 2026

Feeling the tired.........

The days have settled into a familiar routine, each blending into the next. Working at Walmart has been a mixed bag; while the atmosphere has a certain chaos to it, I've found myself grappling with a significant amount of theft, which turns every shift into a grueling marathon. Today, I finally decided to indulge my curiosity and try the infamous Walmart chicken for lunch; a culinary adventure I'd been anticipating for a week. Unfortunately, it fell short of my expectations, leaving me feeling quite let down.

By the day's end, I was utterly exhausted. My feet ached from standing for hours and trekking around the store a dozen times, restless in my attempts to keep an eye on everything. As for my time with Uber, it mirrored yesterday's experience: a barren landscape with few job requests coming in, making the hustle feel almost futile.

Non-existent, well, almost....

As my work routine envelops me in its relentless pace, I've found that personal projects often take a backseat in the whirlwind of deadlines and responsibilities. Yet, amidst the hustle, I managed to carve out precious moments to complete another chapter of my novel. Now, I stand on the brink of a significant milestone, with just 60 pages of editing left before my manuscript is ready to make its debut into the world. The thought of this accomplishment brings me a sense of satisfaction, even though I've struggled to find time for anything else beyond my work. As I continue to navigate through my busy schedule, the anticipation of my upcoming time off grows stronger, promising a long-awaited chance to breathe and immerse myself in my creative endeavors.

The end of times...

..at least for May.....

May 31, 2026

Normal is not normal.........

The big dogs are out of the store, and everything has returned to what we consider normal. This means that late in the afternoon, we had a total of seven attendants available at the front end, but no manager was in sight. Fortunately, this is not a problem because the store runs smoothly, and everyone knows what they need to accomplish. The only time this might become an issue is if there's a serious problem or if anything goes wrong with the Coinstar machine. Overall, things went smoothly with only a few minor hiccups, and the day ended as planned. The front-end staff is acclimating to my management style, and at least two attendants excel at asset protection. I'm going to talk to Simeon about these two; I believe one of them would be a great addition to my division. She has a strong, determined personality. I have one more day ahead of me, and then it's time for a break.

Another day, another chapter....

I am pouring the majority of my morning energy into my novel, and I can feel myself nearing its conclusion. The characters, fully developed and vibrant in my mind, are in place, and the exhilarating climax draws closer with each passing day. This is my fifth time meticulously proofing the manuscript, and I believe it's finally aligning with the vision I've held. The day outside is scorching hot, transforming my once-cool ham and cheese sandwiches into unexpectedly delicious hot ham and cheese creations. While this wasn't a part of my original plan, I have to admit they turned out quite well regardless.

On my commute to work, I decided to stop by the local Walmart, where I gathered some much-needed items, navigating through the aisles filled with bustling shoppers and the faint scent of popcorn from the in-store snack bar. After that brief adventure, my day at work unfolded as quite uneventful, filled with the usual routine.

Back at home, I finally completed my viewing of *Cleopatra 2525*, which left me with more thoughts than I anticipated. The series presented a reasonably engaging overall storyline, though I couldn't help but notice a few glaring issues. For the first 80% of the episodes, each one was a compact 20 minutes long, leaving little time for character development or plot progression before the credits rolled. These brief installments felt rushed and could have easily been expanded to a full hour to allow for deeper storytelling.

It seemed that the creators prioritized showcasing skin and an abundance of explosions over solid narrative depth. Much like the iconic Star Wars epics, the antagonists were portrayed as inept; specifically, the robotic villains that could barely hit their targets. Conversely, our heroes seemed to display miraculous accuracy, landing 30 or 40 blows on each villain, only for those adversaries to suddenly become impervious to defeat. They would then rebound, imperceptibly revived, requiring yet another onslaught of hits to be vanquished. This repetitive cycle was frustrating and diminished the tension.

However, my most significant grievance with the series lies in its abrupt ending. I've encountered this scenario before, where a show concludes on a cliffhanger, only to vanish without resolution. In the final 10 minutes, the writers threw in a significant twist that had the potential to pave the way for another season. When a season wraps up with a cataclysmic event and leaves so many threads unresolved, it leaves me feeling incredibly frustrated and unsatisfied.

June 2026 is here, take a look.
